Description
Bodega Marañones has the potential to express and create unforgettable wines, bringing the terroir of Sierra de Gredos into liquid form. Wines that offer a different perspective on Spanish wine culture. Wines often coming from postage stamp plots such as in Bourgogne and Priorat. The Marañones is named after the location Marañones. It is part of the mountain at 800 m altitude, oriented to the north. We find the three types of granite of San Martin there: the white granite, the brown and the pink. Each vineyard in Marañones has a different soil. Some are on a hill. Others are more towards the highlands. Bodega Marañones has been part of the Pago de Carraovejas group for some years now, known for the top wines of the same name from the Ribera del Duero, but Ossian and Vina Mein also belong to this group. The aim is to add a top house from the most beautiful wine regions of Spain and to apply the same very high quality standards with which they themselves now belong to the Premier League. In addition to Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Galicia, this house comes from the mountains of the Sierra de Gredos.
The Peña Cruzada 2022 comes from a small plot located in the rolling countryside of Gredos, between the Marañones estate and San Martín de Valdeiglesias. This 0.7-hectare plot of old Albillo Real vines is characterized by pink granite soils and a unique mesoclimate, which makes for a wine with exceptional nuances.
The perfect integration of the vineyard with its environment contributes to the unique expression of this wine. The pink granite soil of the Peña Cruzada plot gives the wine an unparalleled minerality, elegance and length.
This wine embodies an exceptional balance between vineyard, viticulture, soil, climate and grape variety, resulting in a refined and complex wine that reflects the Peña Cruzada terroir in its purest form.
The former Pies Descalzos white wine comes from a place called Peña Cruzada, and from the 2022 vintage this will be the main name on the label, although Pies Descalzos will still appear in small, gray letters underneath. It is of course the same small parcel as in previous years, consisting of 0.7 hectares of old vines on pink granite soils with a sandy texture, surrounded by forest.
Like the other white wines from Marañones, this one has a controlled maturity, a floral and elegant aromatic profile, with some extra spiciness. The wine has a modest alcohol percentage of 12%, and the freshness and acidity are well expressed. Due to the small volume, the fermentation and maturation took place in oak barrels of 228 and 600 liters, in which the wine was aged for 10 months. This means that the ratio of oak to wine is higher than in the white Marañones, which means that the wood notes are more prominent here. This gives the wine a Burgundian character, but with the characteristic granite minerality and structure, resulting in an elegant, balanced wine with an extremely tasty and almost salty finish. This wine has great ageing potential and will develop beautifully over time. 1,472 bottles of this vintage were produced. Part of the Pago de Carraovejas group for several years now and they have promoted the wines to the Premier League - 95/100 Parker

The old Pies Descalzos white comes from a place called Peña Cruzada, and that's now the main name on the label of the 2022 Peña Cruzada even though Pies Descalzos is printed in small, gray letters underneath. It's of course the same small plot as in previous years under the old name—0.7 hectares of old vines on pink granite soils and sandy texture surrounded by forest. Like the other white, this has contained ripeness, a floral and elegant aromatic profile with more spiciness and a contained 12% alcohol, with freshness and acidity reflected by the pH of 3.37 and the 5.14 grams of acidity. The smaller volume meant the wine fermented and matured in 228- and 600-liter barrels where it matured for 10 months; so, the ratio of oak to wine is bigger than in the white Marañones, and therefore, the aromatics from the wood are more present here. It gives it a more Burgundian feeling but still with the granite minerality and granularity, coming through as elegant and balanced, with a very tasty, almost salty finish. It should age magnificently. 1,472 bottles produced. It was bottled in the summer of 2023.
Marañones was purchased by Pago de Carraovejas from Ribera del Duero in 2021. They were not very happy with the result from that first harvest, and last year they told me the wines were not going to be released. It seems like the wines were released after all, but they feel more comfortable with the results from 2022 despite being a much warmer and more challenging year. I also tasted one red already bottled from 2023, and it showed even better, showing the natural progression as they get to know their vineyards better and the effect of a less warm and more balanced year. I look forward to tasting the remaining 2023s next year. This is an old project with a new life in the hands of young winemaker Javier Blanco, who also makes the wines at Ossian.
The labels have been restyled and the names fine-tuned toward the name of the places but for now keeping the old names of the whites on the labels. The wines come from a myriad of small plots plus the main property that names the project, all in the village of San Martín de Valdeiglesias in the Madrid part of Gredos, even if Gredos is not (at least for now on the front labels) mentioned anywhere. They have a total of 25 hectares of old vines that are worked organically and biodynamically, but the wines are not yet certified. They produce an average of 60,000 bottles per vintage. A name to put back on your radar screens.

A unique albillo that shows as many gastronomic attributes of the grape as possible. The flinty, warm-stone minerality is certainly attractive, and notes of sour cream and macadamia nuts confer mealy creaminess and richness to the palate. Full-bodied and creamy yet taut and long. Drink now or hold.
