Powerful red wine from old Montepulciano vines from the hills of the Metauro valley in Le Marche.

The Guerrieri winery and its location in the Metauro Valley

Azienda Agraria Guerrieri is a family-owned winery with a rich history dating back to 1800. The winery is located in the Marche region on Italy's east coast, overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 200 meters, just 12 kilometers from the coast, in the historic Metauro Valley. This valley is named after the region's longest river, which feeds Guerrieri's vineyards and positively influences the microclimate.

The location between the sea and the Apennine Mountains creates a mild climate with constant winds and significant temperature variations between day and night. This contributes to the complexity and aromatic expression of the grapes. The soils consist of gray calcareous clay that transitions deeper into light blue sediment. The upper layer contains silty clay with small limestone particles, formed by erosion and the breakdown of organic matter.

Origin and composition of Guerriero della Terra

Guerriero della Terra is a red wine from the Marche IGT appellation, made from 90% Montepulciano and 10% Sangiovese. The grapes come from a historic parcel at the top of the estate's hills. The wine is intended to express the unique microclimate influenced by northeasterly sea winds during the harvest months of September and October. The vineyards are approximately 35 years old, south- to southwest-facing, with a planting density of 3,000 vines per hectare. The yield is low, averaging 1.5 kg per vine. After reaching full ripeness, the grapes remain on the vines for some time for additional exposure to sun and wind. The harvest takes place at the end of October and is carried out entirely by hand.

Vinification and maturation of Guerriero della Terra

After careful selection, the grapes are vinified with a long maceration and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures for 12 months in oak barrels and then for another year in bottle. This process gives the wine structure, depth, and aging potential.

Color, smell and taste of Guerriero della Terra

The wine has a deep, velvety red color. The nose reveals aromas of black and red berries , combined with floral notes, dark chocolate, and spices. On the palate, it is powerful, elegant, and complex , with velvety tannins and a long finish. The wine has an alcohol content of 15%, a residual sugar of 8.5 g/L, an acidity of 6.7 g/L, and a pH of 3.5.

Wine and food pairings with Guerriero della Terra

Thanks to its power, structure, and aromatic complexity, this wine pairs well with savory dishes and richer flavors. Some suggestions:

  • Tenderloin with rosemary and red wine sauce – The full body and high alcohol content are a perfect match for the tender meat and spicy sauce.
  • Roast leg of lamb with garlic and thyme – The spicy notes in the wine complement the flavors of the meat beautifully.
  • Wild ragout with mushrooms – The earthiness of the mushrooms and the game meat blend harmoniously with the depth of the wine.
  • Aged Pecorino or Old Parmesan – The salty and savory flavors of the cheese are balanced by the fruity and woody notes of the wine.

Wijnhuis
