Description
Bodegas MORCA is part of Juan Gil Family. Bodegas Morca is located in the village of Borja, in the province of Zaragoza and belongs to the Campo de Borja appellation - the region famous for the red, robust Garnacha. Garnacha grapes from small plots with low yields are hand-picked and fermented separately in small barrels and then transferred to French oak barrels to complete the malolactic fermentation process. The wine matures for 22 months in French oak and then each barrel is tasted and after a very strict selection there is a very limited production of this exclusive wine. The wine then gets at least 6-9 months of bottle aging in the cellars of Morca before this exclusive wine is released on the market.
This Morca Garnacha has an opaque purple colour in the glass with lush but precise aromas of crushed black fruit and plums on the nose, framed by cedar and spice. Firmly structured, rich, polished with ripe and supple tannic backbone. This is super ripe and heady, in the style of a (Spanish) Amarone.

November 2021 Week 2, The Wine Advocate
The 2018 Morca, the eponymous Garnacha from campo de Borja, showcases the house style of ripe wines but with a floral character that makes them very showy and with generous oak in a surprisingly balanced and fresh style. 2018 somehow produced lighter wines despite reaching 16% alcohol, and the wine is very tasty, expressive, perfumed and attractive. Really very good in its style. 9,600 bottles were filled in August 2020.
Morca is the winery in Campo de Borja from the Gil family from Jumilla and Jordi Flos. The winery owns 100 hectares in the region and currently produces around 100,000 to 150,000 bottles, but the projection is to reach 400,000 to 500,000 in 10 years' time. Powerful, ripe and well-oaked Garnacha from Borja.

Deep, lurid violet. Ripe dark berries, cherry cola, vanilla and pungent flowers on the deeply perfumed nose. Smooth, broad and sweet on entry, then tighter in the midpalate, offering impressively concentrated cherry and blackberry flavors and hints of vanilla, licorice and spicecake. A smoky nuance builds with air and carries through a very long, gently tannic finish that repeats the floral and licorice notes.

This side venture of the sprawling, Jumilla-based Gil Family Wine Estates empire is a new (first vintage, 2016) partnership with their long-time general manager, Jordi Floss. It has quickly emerged as one of Campo de Borja’s best sources for high-quality, lush and expressive, even flamboyant wines, sourced from the bodega’s 20 hectares of bush-vine Garnacha, much of which is extremely old. Winemaking is overseen by Frank Gonzalez, who honed his skills under the legendary Chris Ringland, one of Australia’s most revered winemakers. The entry-level bottlings here deliver excellent value and are quite enjoyable when young for their assertive fruit and spice character and lush textures.

Bodegas Morca is found in Borja, the birthplace of Grenacha, iconic for its specific limestone soils that give the wines character. Situated on the Moncayo slopes you will find the 30-50 year old vines of Bodegas Morca. The cool winds from the north increase the wine's concentration whilst still preserving a freshness and lively acidity. Each parcel of grapes is hand harvested and vinified separately - allowing for the best blending opportunities.
