Domaine des Comtes Lafon

Domaine des Comtes Lafon belongs to the absolute elite of Burgundy and has been considered a benchmark for great white Burgundy for generations. Under the leadership of Léa and Pierre Lafon, the estate remains true to the philosophy that made Dominique Lafon internationally famous. The vineyards are cultivated organically and biodynamically, with a strong focus on biodiversity and healthy soils. The wines ferment in oak barrels and age for extended periods on their fine lees, allowing them to develop depth, complexity, and exceptional aging potential.

Clos de la Barre

Clos de la Barre is a historic monopole of Domaine des Comtes Lafon and is situated directly behind the estate in Meursault. The calcareous clay and limestone soils produce a Chardonnay with a beautiful balance of richness, freshness, and minerality. Although it is a village wine, Clos de la Barre often possesses the complexity and length of many Premier Crus, and this cuvée is considered one of the finest village wines of the appellation.

The 2022 volume

2022 is one of the most successful recent vintages in Burgundy. The warm growing season yielded perfectly ripe grapes, while sufficient freshness was retained to give the wines tension and elegance. In this vintage, Clos de la Barre displays a particularly fine balance between ripe fruit, refined acidity, and impressive length.

According to William Kelley of The Wine Advocate, the 2022, along with the excellent 2020, is among the finest vintages of Clos de la Barre of recent years.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, after which the wine ages for a long period on the fine lees. This classic aging process lends the wine extra complexity, texture, and refinement, while the fresh minerality of the terroir is fully preserved.

Scent, taste and character

The 2022 Clos de la Barre opens with refined aromas of ripe pear, citrus oil, and white flowers, followed by notes of freshly baked brioche, roasted hazelnuts, and a subtle mineral undertone. As the wine opens up, nuances of honey, ripe apple, and a hint of butter emerge, remaining beautifully interwoven with the fresh fruit expression.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a silky texture and a strikingly energetic structure. The combination of ripe stone fruit, vibrant citrus, refined oak influences, and chalky minerality creates an impressive harmony. The finish is long, clean, and precise, with freshness and depth remaining perfectly balanced.

Storage potential

Although the wine already possesses much charm in its youth, it has sufficient structure and concentration to continue developing for years to come. With bottle aging, additional aromas of hazelnut, beeswax, honey, roasted almonds, and subtle truffle notes emerge, while the mineral tension is retained.
