Description
The domain Domaine des Comtes Lafon
Domaine des Comtes Lafon, located in Meursault, ranks among Burgundy's elite. For decades, the estate has been renowned for wines that perfectly express the purity of the terroir and the power of their origins. Under the leadership of Dominique Lafon , the estate became a model of organic and biodynamic viticulture, long before these terms became commonplace in the region. Dominique officially retired at the end of 2021 after an impressive 37-year career. His daughter Léa and nephew Pierre Lafon continue the work with the same meticulousness and respect for the vineyard.
Comtes Lafon owns some of the most prestigious plots in Meursault, Volnay, and Montrachet. The house's style is recognizable by a subtle interplay of richness and energy. While once a generous use of new oak was characteristic, the new generation opts for a more restrained use of wood and greater transparency of terroir.
The vineyard Le Montrachet Grand Cru
Le Montrachet, located between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, is the most prestigious white terroir in Burgundy—and perhaps even the world. The thin, chalky topsoil on a subsoil of marl and limestone creates a perfect balance of ripeness, structure, and minerality. Only a few producers own a small parcel here, and Domaine des Comtes Lafon is among that select group.
The southeastern-facing location guarantees optimal sun exposure, while the altitude and the Morvan winds provide freshness. This is where wines are created that combine power with unparalleled precision: Montrachet at its purest.
2020: tension and energy
The 2020 harvest yielded small, concentrated berries with exceptional acidity. The dry and warm summer ripened the grapes, but the cool nights preserved freshness and vibrancy. According to Dominique Lafon himself, 2020 has a more muscular structure than 2019, with energetic acidity that lends the wine tension and length. While 2019 was round and charming, 2020 demonstrates focus, precision, and depth.
Vinification and aging
For the first time, only a third of the oak barrels were replaced in this vintage, instead of the usual 100%. This decision ensures greater transparency and allows the mineral character of the vineyard to shine through. The wine was aged in the Meursault cellars on fine lees, with minimal intervention, and bottled under a Diam 30 closure to ensure pure, controlled maturation.
Tasting notes 2020 Le Montrachet Grand Cru
The 2020 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Le Montrachet Grand Cru opens with an expressive bouquet of buttery white fruit, honeycomb, orange oil, peach, and nutmeg. The wine is rich and satiny, with a powerful, layered core of ripe fruit, subtle spice, and vibrant acidity that creates tension and precision. It concludes with a long, resonant finish that embodies the pure class of Montrachet.
The texture is impressive: broad but never heavy, with a remarkable combination of depth and clarity. Notes of ripe stone fruit, almond, and a hint of ginger are carried by a vibrant minerality. The balance between creaminess and freshness makes this 2020 a wine of exceptional balance.
Reviews and style
Both The Wine Advocate and Vinous rated this wine exceptionally highly, scoring 96-98 points . William Kelley (The Wine Advocate) calls the 2020 "expressive, dramatic, and full of energy," and particularly praises the balance between power and elegance. Neal Martin (Vinous) praises the "mineral-driven" style and the fact that the lower percentage of new oak allows the terroir to express itself even more. He describes the wine as "brilliantly balanced, taut and fresh, with veins of stem ginger and silex toward the persistent finish."
Both reviewers place the 2020 alongside other great recent vintages from the estate – 2017, 2018 and 2019 – and expect this Montrachet to have impressive longevity, with a drinking window stretching from 2027 to 2060 .
Drinking time and development
The wine is still young and will continue to develop in the coming years. While already impressive, it deserves time in the cellar to reveal its full potential. From 2027 onwards, it will achieve its optimal balance of power, maturity, and finesse. As a natural product, it will remain fascinating to see how this Montrachet will develop in the coming decades.
Wine and food pairings
- Lobster with beurre blanc and lime leaf – the creaminess of the sauce enhances the texture of the wine, while the citrus notes provide freshness.
- Turbot with truffle and Jerusalem artichoke puree – the earthy notes perfectly complement the ripe, nutty character of the Montrachet.
- Veal sweetbreads with hazelnut and morels – the rich flavours and creamy texture find a perfect balance in this powerful yet elegant wine.
- Roasted scallops with cauliflower cream – the subtle sweetness of the scallops harmonizes with the honeyed notes of the wine.
- Risotto with Parmesan and Lemon – the creamy texture and fresh acidity enhance each other in an elegant combination.
- Grilled chicken with tarragon and beurre noisette – the spicy and buttery notes complement the layered character of the wine.

Soaring from the glass with aromas of buttered orchard fruit, honeycomb, orange oil, peach and nutmeg, the 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru is full-bodied, rich and satiny, with a layered, muscular mid-palate that's girdled by lively acids and a long, resonant finish. This is an expressive, dramatic Montrachet that can comfortably keep company with the superb 2017, 2018 and 2019 vintages.
Dominique Lafon celebrated his official retirement in December 2021, after 37 years at the domaine, and is handing over the reins to daughter Léa and nephew Pierre, even if he will surely still be on hand to help the new generation for many years to come. He can reflect with satisfaction on an important career, as the first generation of the Lafon family to become a farmer and grow the grapes he vinified and as one of his generation's leading pioneers of organic farming. And he can certainly be satisfied with the 2020 vintage, a terrific success at this address. As the accompanying notes attest, I was very impressed, and special mention is owing to the best set of red wines I can remember tasting here.

From: Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)
The 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru, which this year is matured in one-third new oak instead of 100%, has a very mineral-driven bouquet with impressive focus and vibrancy. I think that prudent approach to the new oak reveals more of that prized Montrachet "dirt". Very expressive and transparent. The palate is brilliantly balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, spicy and taut with veins of stem ginger and silex towards the persistent finish. Stunning. Closure: Diam 30
- By Neal Martin on October 2021
Dominique Lafon was in typically irrepressible form when I dropped in at his winery in Meursault. His son, Pierre, took me through the reds first. “The reds are racked but not sulfured,” he told me. “They are very elegant in style with between 13.5° and 13.8° alcohol, and they will be bottled in late spring, as I think they can take a slightly longer aging.” We then moved into the adjacent cellar, where I tasted his 2020 Mâcon wines, which I have moved to my small Mâconnais report, before broaching his Meursaults. I asked Lafon how he compared the 2019 and 2020 vintages. “The 2019s are slightly rounder and more appealing,” he told me. “The tartaric backbone of the 2020s gives them great energy. The 2019s remind me of old-time ripe vintages, maybe like the 1992.” [At this juncture, I asked to what vintage he would compare 2020, but he was stumped for an answer!] Lafon continued, “I think the 2020s are fresher than the 2018s. You feel more heat on the 2018s. Picking started on August 20 with the Bouchères and Perrières, and then we picked the reds, which were harvested very quickly.” Readers should also note that the 2020 Montrachet is the first vintage not completely vinified in new oak; around one-third was new this year, and there will be no new oak in 2021. The 2020s are excellent in quality, quite expressive and intense, full of Meursault DNA. Whereas I normally put the Meursault-Perrières on top, I feel that the earlier growing season did not benefit this Premier Cru as much, and instead the Meursault-Charmes is my pick of the bunch, with Genevrières hot on its tail and Bouchères the “hidden gem,” not that those exist given the status of Comtes-Lafon. Since 2014, all Lafon’s wines have been bottled under Diam 30 closures.

Comtes Lafon is a highly regarded wine producer known for producing exceptional wines in Burgundy (France). Dominique Lafon, the owner and winemaker, is a respected figure in the world of wine.
History of Comtes Lafon
Domaine des Comtes Lafon was originally founded by Jules Joseph Barthélémy Lafon, born in 1864. He married Marie Boch in January 1894, whose family were already wine merchants and estate owners in Meursault. He expanded the estate and purchased several important plots at the beginning of the 20th century, such as: Le Montrachet Grand Cru, the Meursault 1er Crus “Les Perrières”, “Les Charmes” and “Les Genevrières”, Volnay 1er Crus “Santenots” and “Clos des Chênes”. In 1961, the entire production of Domaine des Comtes Lafon was bottled on the estate and he permanently moved from Paris to Meursault. Dominique Lafon, René's son, took over the domain in 1984 and gradually ended the sharecropping agreements, so that from 1987 the entire 13.80 hectares are managed exclusively by the Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Lafon is known for its high-quality Chardonnays with an oily and mineral character. The estate owns and produces from several vineyards in Meursault, as well as from other appellations in Burgundy, such as Volnay and Monthélie.

Comtes Lafon wines are produced in relatively limited quantities, making them somewhat difficult to find.
