Description
The long-awaited Clos Mogador Rosé will make its appearance in the first quarter of 2025. This 2022 vintage has been allowed to mature for 3 years before it can see the light of day. The wine receives the same education as the red Clos Mogador. Only 1 barrel of this wine has been made, so it is extremely scarce. As is the case with the Dido Rose , the Escabeces or the Rene Barbier Pedrer Rosat, these are not your average summer rosés, but are exclusive unique wines such as the Vina Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva.
The Clos Mogador Gratallops Vi de Villa Rosat, as the wine is called in full, is a Gran Reseva and is still somewhat reductive in its early years, so decanting/carafing is certainly recommended, but after some oxygen and swirling, a great palette of sesame seeds, grapefruit and mineral notes (pebble, limestone) is released. This is a dry, full rosé with a long, broad aftertaste. The 2021 vintage is the first vintage and is a blend of 50% garnacha, 30% macabeo and 20% carignan which was immediately pressed and co-fermented and was allowed to mature there for 18 months in an old foudres. Rene Barbier searched for this Foudres for a long time because he wanted an old barrel with a lot of history and which had lived and had beautiful wines in it and this ultimately became a barrel that he found in the Mosel and this barrel is most likely more than 80 years old. This is a rosé or rosado that will age very well and is a fantastic gastronomic wine made for spicy dishes or for nice veal, roast chicken but also great with fish fried in butter.
Vintage 2022
When we were going through the year 2022 we did not know that it would be the beginning of a long period of drought. In 2022 the vines had the water reserves of 2021 and therefore, we had a good harvest but with a clear character of a warm and dry year. I sincerely believe that the work in the field and winery was crucial to be able to make wines that represent the character of the vintage with a good balance. René Barbier

The rosé 2021 Gratallops Vi de Villa Rosat was produced with a majority (70% to 80%) in the Planassos part between Mogador and Manyetes of Garnacha, Macabeo and Cariñena plus the grapes from younger vines (Mogador, Nelin...). It has a bright salmon color and a very different and characterful nose, savory, reminiscent of chicken broth (salty!), herbal and super tasty. It's quite direct, with 13.5% alcohol and very good freshness, a bit atypical for Priorat, very long, precise, clean and dry. This matured in a 2,000-liter 10-year-old oak foudre for 18 months. They produced some 3,000 bottles. Brilliant!
There is a new wine from Clos Mogador... a rosé! A village wine from Gratallops that complements another village red from La Figuera (Com Tu).

Very reductive now. White sesame, grapefruit and some stones on the nose. A dry, full-bodied rosado here with a lot of substance. Long and broad finish. 50% garnacha, 30% macabeo and 20% carignan pressed directly and co-fermented. 18 months in old foudres. A rosado that will age well. Drink or hold.

From: From Revolution to Evolution: The Garnatxas and Cariñenas of Priorat & Montsant (Nov 2024)
The 2021 Rosat Vi de Vila blends 60% Garnatxa, 20% Cariñena and 20% Macabeu from Gratallops, Priorat. Aged for 18 months in foudres, this Rosé offers aromas of raisin, herbs, fennel and rose petals. Dry and rich, the fresh and delicate palate glides with a plush texture and a lingering praline flavor. This ripe Rosé is full of solar energy and nuance.

Founded by René Barbier in 1979, Clos Mogador is one of the five famous wineries that reinvented Priorat in the 1990s. René Barbier Jr. now runs the daily operations, overseeing both oenology and viticulture. Possessing an excellent understanding of the extreme conditions in Priorat, Barbier Jr. focuses on Garnatxa and Cariñena, aiming to bring out the purest possible expression of the region and working to revive long-suffering vineyards, such as Manyetas, Almendros and the stunning Espectacle. Barbier doesn’t like fruitiness, equating it to “the ketchup of wine, ” but he produces vivid expressions of the regional terroir, imbued with the subtle, painstakingly polished textures that are his true love. A far cry from the concentrated styles of yesteryear, these wines have the strange magic one finds in Priorat: weightless concentration, complex, ripe expressions, freshness and a free-flowing spirit. As Barbier Jr. says, “In Priorat, we make wines of character. If you want elegance, go to Burgundy.”

René Barbier is, together with Carles Pastrana of Clos de l 'Obac, Alvaro Palacios (from Rioja, but known by L'Ermita in Priorat) and José Lluis Perez (Clos Martinet, and father of Sarah Perez), one of the "founding fathers "of this recently discovered or rediscovered Priorat wine region. Clos Mogador is named after the single vineyard that René Barbier started cultivating in the 1970s, in the now world-famous village of Gratallops. Clos Mogador wines have become mythical wines, just like Sassicaia from Italy and Château Margaux from France. Clos Mogador has the cult status of great world wine. A special feature in wine making at René Barbier: he presses the grapes with an olive oil press, so that only half of the grape juice is obtained (in contrast to a normal press). As a result, the wine is even 50% more concentrated and looks almost likewise in the glass. Priorat wines are already naturally quite concentrated, and yields are usually already microscopic. Robert Parker was one of the first international journalists to give Clos Mogador wines extra critical acclaim.
The Clos Mogador vineyard is located at an altitude of about 800 meters in the form of an amphitheater with stone terraces. Biodiversity is the magic word here: in addition to grape plants, you will find fruit trees, olive trees and local native shrubs here. The grape plants, some of which are eighty to one hundred years old, grow on a slate base. Slate is a poor and hard soil that has the main property of generating a high acidity in the grapes. The location of the vineyard on slopes in a northeasterly direction to the sea ensures that the nights are very chilly. Because the temperature in the summer in that place is usually thirty degrees Celsius during the day, this means that there are large temperature differences. This ensures that dyes and tannins accumulate in large quantities in the grape skins and that is a sign of quality. The grapes are grown biodynamically, so with attention and respect for the plant and natural conditions, and all work on the land is carried out by hand.
In La figuera (Montsant) his vineyards of René Barbier lie against a mountain slope at an altitude of 400 meters approximately. Beautiful Garnacha come from in this area. This is where the famous Espectacle wine comes from. Nice and ripe with enough acids due to its height. He only picks the grapes when everyone has already harvested, which makes them nice and ripe and full. And its vines are 120 years old with low yields. In Falset his bodega is located on a modern local industrial area Celler laurona.
Grand Cruwines is the co-importer of the wines of Rene Barbier, such as the Clos Mogador, the Espectacle, Manyetes and the Nelin Blanco.
