Description
The history of Pontet-Canet dates back to the early 18th century, when the estate was founded. In 1705, the vineyard was established by Jean-François de Pontet, a major figure in the Bordeaux wine industry. He expanded the vineyard and built a château, from which the estate takes its name. At the end of the 18th century, the property came into the hands of the Canet family and became known as 'Château Pontet-Canet'. The Canet family played a major role in the development of the estate's vineyards and winemaking practices. In 1855, when Emperor Napoleon III ordered the classification of Bordeaux wines for the Exposition Universelle de Paris, Pontet-Canet was classified as a fifth growth (Cinquième Cru) in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855. This classification recognized the historical reputation of the estate and the quality of its wines. In the 20th century, the Cruse family, wine merchants from Bordeaux, acquired Pontet-Canet.
The Pontet-Canet vineyards cover approximately 81 hectares (200 acres) of prime Pauillac terroir. The vineyard is planted with a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (typically around 65-70%), as well as Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
The Pontet-Canet 2022 is a surprising wine. It is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. The grapes were picked from September 8 to September 28. The wine was matured in 50% new French barrels, 35% concrete amphora and 15% one-year-old barrels. Usually in warm, dry years, 2022 comes across as restrained. It is a wine of beautiful intensity rather than size, characterized by remarkable freshness and a sense of tension and precision. So much energy and clarity. It is full and yet so tight and focused, with beautiful fruit and transparency. It is spicy and fine with a superfine texture. One of the surprises of 2022.

What a finish on this Pontet-Canet. So much energy and brightness. It's full-bodied yet so tight and focused with superb fruit and transparency. It is racy and fine with super fine texture. It's like crushed cabernet sauvignon with cassis, tobacco and cigar box. Licorice and spices. Freshness of the seed. 57% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot, 4% cabernet franc, and 4% petit verdot.

From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 Pontet-Canet is a super-refined wine from the Tesseron family. It is perhaps a touch less opulent than in years past, but in exchange, it boasts more energy, focus and cut, all qualities that are so welcome here. Bright red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint and mocha all build effortlessly in the glass. In 2022, Pontet Canet is shaping up to be an absolute gem.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Pontet-Canet is a surprising wine. Usually much more opulent, especially in warm, dry years, the 2022 comes across as restrained and understated. It is a wine of linear intensity rather than size, marked by notable freshness and a feeling of tension and precision I don’t recall seeing in the past. Clean mineral notes extend the finish effortlessly. I very much admire the precision and vibrancy here. Unforgettable.

Things feel a little bit more controlled at Pontet-Canet these days. That’s not a bad thing. In the past, I felt the ‘that’s the wine the vintage gave us’ approach was a bit too loose at times. “We started to see above average temperatures in March,” Technical Director Matthieu Bessonnet told me. “There was a bit of frost in early April, and then a good bit of rain. Flowering took place in May. It was short and homogenous. We received 90mm of rain in June but avoided mildew pressure. Veraison was quite long. Bessonnet opted for ten small ferments, each started with a pied de cuve, whereas in the past, each of the 60 fermentation vats was allowed to follow its own path. The results are pretty striking at this stage.

The Cruse family has made significant improvements to the estate and winemaking processes. In the mid-2000s, Pontet-Canet underwent a remarkable transformation. The estate, led by owner Alfred Tesseron (later owner of Tesseron Estate), embraced biodynamic farming practices. This marked a major shift towards organic and sustainable viticulture, avoiding synthetic chemicals and emphasizing the holistic relationship between the vineyard, the soil and the environment.
Terroir of Pontet-Canet

Production of Pontet-Canet
The winemaking process at Pontet-Canet involves a combination of traditional and modern techniques. The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand, with fermentation taking place in temperature-controlled wooden barrels. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, usually for 16 to 20 months, depending on the vintage. Pontet-Canet wines are known for their deep color, concentrated fruit flavors and a structure that allows them to age gracefully. They often exhibit a balance between power and elegance, with fine tannins and complex aromas. It is believed that the estate's commitment to biodynamic farming has contributed to the purity and expression of the terroir in their wines.
