Description
Château Palmer Winery
Château Palmer is among the absolute top wines in Margaux, known for its biodynamic approach and distinctive style. The estate combines clay-rich soils with gravel, resulting in wines with texture, aromatic intensity, and balance. Under the leadership of Thomas Duroux, the focus is on precision in the vineyard and vinification that harmoniously blends freshness and ripe fruit. Alter Ego de Palmer is the château's second wine and is made with the same care, but in a more accessible and expressive style.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Margaux and the 2022 vintage
Margaux is known for its elegant and aromatic wines, often with floral notes, refined tannins, and a characteristic freshness. The gravel and clay soils provide structure and depth, while the proximity of the Gironde estuary has a regulating effect on the climate.
The 2022 vintage was characterized by a warm and dry growing season, with excellent conditions for full phenolic ripeness. Thanks to biodynamic methods and meticulous vineyard care, Château Palmer preserved freshness and balance. The result is wines with ripe fruit, supple tannins, and remarkable energy, despite the strength of the vintage.
Vineyards and origins of Alter Ego
The grapes for Alter Ego de Palmer come from plots not used for the Grand Vin, but are still farmed according to the same biodynamic principles and rigorously selected. The terroir, with its higher clay content, contributes to the wine's round texture, ripe fruit profile, and immediate charm.
Alter Ego is not simply a second wine, but a full-fledged expression of Palmer, with its own identity and a clear reflection of the terroir and vintage.
Grape varieties and composition
The 2022 Alter Ego de Palmer is blended from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot playing a prominent role. Merlot brings juiciness, roundness, and rich fruit, while Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, freshness, and aromatic tension.
This composition perfectly matches the warm character of the vintage and results in a wine that is both powerful and refined, with excellent aging potential.
Harvest and vinification
The harvest took place under ideal conditions, with a strong focus on plot selection and optimal ripeness. The grapes were carefully vinified, with attention paid to gentle and controlled extraction to preserve finesse and balance.
The vinification focused on precision and elegance, with oak aging adding structure and complexity without overpowering the fruit. This results in a wine with depth, yet also with an accessible and refined style.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, intense ruby red color. The nose is expressive and ripe, with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and cherry, complemented by violets, herbs, a hint of mint, and subtle graphite notes.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a concentrated and layered core of ripe fruit. The tannins are velvety and ripe, creating a supple mouthfeel. Fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and contributes to a long, harmonious finish.
Structure, style and drinking window
The 2022 Alter Ego de Palmer combines richness and concentration with freshness and precision. The style is more accessible and open than the Grand Vin, yet clearly retains the signature elegance and class of Château Palmer.
Thanks to its balance and structure, the wine can continue to develop in the coming years. In larger formats, the wine will gain additional complexity and further reveal its refined character.
Summary of professional reviews
William Kelley praises the 2022 Alter Ego de Palmer for its ripe fruit expression, harmonious structure, and velvety tannins. He emphasizes the combination of power and elegance and considers the wine a particularly successful expression of this exceptional vintage. The full review texts can be found in the Professional Reviews tab.

Opulent and rich, with luxurious, ripe blackberry and blackcurrant character. It's full-bodied and very layered, with soft, silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Creamy texture at the end. 51% merlot, 43% cabernet sauvignon and 6% petit verdot. This is delicious now, but will age nicely. Best after 2027.

The 2022 Alter Ego is bright, punchy and focused. Floral notes meld into a core of red/purplish fruit, spice, mint and orange peel. Medium in body and gracious, with sublime balance, Alter Ego is superb. In fact, the 2022 is one of the most refined editions I have tasted. It is not a very typical wine for Bordeaux, but it is among the classiest and most distinctive, without a doubt.

Château Palmer is located in the heart of the Margaux appellation in the Bordeaux wine region. The 66 hectares of vineyards have a gravel soil and the vines overlook the Gironde River. The area with its rich ancient history and nourishing microclimate is a fantastic environment for the vines. Here they can flourish and grow under the passionate care of the people of Château Palmer. Behind every great wine is a great terroir. This is also the case at Château Palmer, which is located on a long strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde. The land is well drained, rich in the deposits of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. It is difficult soil for agriculture, but exceptional for grapes. Of course, the vines also need good care in order to perform optimally. And that is certainly entrusted to the employees of Château Palmer! Full of passion and love for the vines, they cultivate the demanding terroir. The people of this winery are more than just colleagues. Together they embrace the common core values of Château Palmer and are therefore extremely dynamic, curious, passionate, open-minded and determined. In short, they live for and with the vineyards.
