Description
The total area of the Larcis-Ducasse vineyard is 11.15 hectares, of which 9.80 hectares are in cultivation. The planting density is 6,000 vines/ha, which will be increased to 8,888 after replanting. It's a common belief that higher planting density leads to higher yields, which is simply not the case. Because of the high planting density, the yield per plant is significantly lower, and competition forces the vines to develop deeper roots. This primarily benefits quality, not quantity.
The 2022 Larcis Ducasse bursts with aromas of rich, creamy berry fruit interwoven with notes of licorice, bay leaf, and spices. It is a blend of 86% Merlot (harvested from September 13th to 21st) and 14% Cabernet Franc (harvested from September 21st to 23rd). The wine was aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% new and 50% one-year-old. The 2022 vintage is full, broad, and enveloping; it is a structured, layered wine with a ripe core of fruit, supple tannins, and a long finish.
This is a 1.5 litre magnum – even tastier, more festive and with a longer drinking window.

1. Roast leg of lamb with thyme, garlic and roasted root vegetables
The spicy notes of the lamb enhance the wine's earthy character, while the juicy meat rounds out the tannins. The roasted vegetables complement the ripe, warm style.
2. Beef stew with red wine, mushrooms and bay leaf
The rich, long-braised flavors harmonize with the wine's depth and complexity. The umami of the mushrooms brings out the savory element in the glass.
3. Roasted duck breast with cherry compote and parsnip puree
The combination of ripe fruit and savory intensity from the dish perfectly complements the dark fruit and floral finesse of the wine. The creaminess of the purée complements the mouthfeel.
4. Lentils with duck confit and fresh sage
The firm structure of the lentils supports the body of the wine, while the salty meat and herbs combine beautifully with the ripe profile and elegance of the Larcis Ducasse.
5. Fried veal sweetbreads with truffle potatoes and red wine jus
The sweetbreads' soft texture complements the wine's silky tannins. The truffled potato and rich jus add depth that complements the layered flavor profile.
6. Venison fillet with blackberry jus, roasted celeriac and hazelnuts
The power and finesse of the game meat and the sweet-fruity sauce enhance the wine's complex fruitiness and spiciness. Celeriac and nuts add earthiness and texture.

Less super-ripe than was sometimes the case in the past, the 2022 Larcis Ducasse has a completely seductive bouquet of cassis, mulberries, licorice, pencil lead and menthol, combining beautiful spices and dark berries. Medium to full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it's seamless and concentrated with a multidimensional core of fruit, velvety tannins, a vibrant mid-palate and a long, saline finish.

The 2022 Larcis Ducasse is a huge, inky wine. A firm backbone of structure lies behind all of that opulence, yielding a wine that is both extravagantly rich and super-classic. That’s a pretty appealing combination in my book. Dark red-toned fruit, spice, leather, tobacco, incense and mocha emerge, but only with great reluctance. The 2022 is packed to the core. I don’t imagine it will be ready to drink anytime soon, but is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. The blend is 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc, a bit more Franc than usual, aging in equal parts 225- and 500-liter barrels. Tasted four times.

Château Larcis-Ducasse is located in the historic area of the Plateau and the Grande Côte where the majority of Saint-Emilion's Premiers Grand Cru wines are located. The vineyards of Château Larcis-Ducasse enjoy a terroir with exceptional natural qualities. The grouped plots of 11 hectares in total are located on the west side of Château Pavie and north of Castle Troplong Mondot. Larcis-Ducasse has the top of the famous Pavie hill (Côte Pavie) and has a beautiful position, fully south facing with a view of the Dordogne valley. A very favorable position for perfect ripening of the grapes, because the climatic extremes are tempered. Sheltered from the north wind and protected by the river, the valuable vines are not exposed to frost or heat waves. The grapes are given the opportunity to fully ripen while their freshness and fruit are fully preserved thanks to the interaction of warm summer days with cool nights under the influence of the Dordogne river.
The Château Larcis Ducasse vineyards are planted with approximately 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc at a density of 6000 vines per hectare with an average age of 35 years.
