Description
The total surface of the vineyard of Larcis-Ducasse is 11.15 ha of which 9.80 ha is in use. The planting density is 6,000 vines/ha and this will be increased to 8,888 after replanting. It is a common idea that a higher planting density is intended to produce more, but this is not the case. Due to the high planting density, the yield per plant is much lower and the plant is forced by the 'competition' to root deeper. This mainly benefits the quality and certainly not the quantity. This Larcis-Ducasse is a Merlot driven Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé (approx. 88%) supplemented with Cabernet Franc. The wine ages for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels of which 55% new and 45% 1st year.
Elegant, layered and pure terroir expression from a challenging vintage
The 2021 Château Larcis Ducasse shows how great terroir and craftsmanship can be expressed even in cool years. From the south-facing slopes of the famous Côte Pavie in Saint-Émilion, this wine beautifully expresses the finesse and freshness of the vintage.
In the glass, an inviting bouquet of ripe red cherries, blueberries, iris, and subtle graphite tones presents itself. Underneath lies a core of wet limestone, so typical of this unique terroir. With some time in the glass, nuances of violets, mint and a hint of cedar wood also emerge.
The palate is medium to full-bodied, with a refined structure and energetic acidity that gives the wine liveliness and precision. The tannins are silky but present, beautifully woven into the whole. What makes this vintage truly special is the delicate balance between intensity and elegance – a wine that seduces rather than overwhelms.
The finish is long, mineral and layered, with a nice tension that makes you long for the next sip. Although it already shows charm, this wine certainly has the potential to develop even more depth and complexity with a few years of bottle aging. Not for nothing has always been one of the great favorites of JP Moueix, aka "the nose".

Offering up exotic aromas of minty blackberries and cherries mingled with dark chocolate, confit orange and melted asphalt, the 2021 Larcis Ducasse is medium to full-bodied, with a rich and creamy palate framed by powdery tannins. It's unusually sweet and unctuous for the vintage and concludes with a discreetly herbal finish. Maturation in wood, now featuring some foudres and 500-liter barrels in addition to barriques, lasted until April, with bottling just over three months later.

Very complex and subtle with cedar, dried herb, green tobacco, berry and lavender aromas that follow through to a medium body, with ultra-fine tannins that give a sophistication and beauty to the wine, especially from this vintage. 86% merlot and 14% cabernet franc. Drink after 2027.

From: 2021 Bordeaux: L’Enfant Terrible (Feb 2024)
The 2021 Larcis Ducasse has turned out better than I expected. It is a shy, introverted Larcis built along super-classic lines—the sort of Saint-Émilion that will emerge only with a number of years in bottle. Spice, tobacco, cedar, menthol, licorice and dried herbs all build effortlessly in the glass. This is such a classy, elegant wine. Tasted three times.

From: 2021 Bordeaux En Primeur: Back to Classicism (May 2022)
The 2021 Larcis Ducasse is a dark, brooding wine. The 2021 feels a bit pushed, something I am not used to saying about this cru. The 2021 is more power than finesse. Black fruit, leather, spice, cloves and licorice are front and center. Ultimately, the 2021 is heavy, with little of the nuance or sophistication that are typically so present here. Perhaps élevage will help. Today, Larcis is quite surprisingly underwhelming, even with the focus on core parcels that the château employed in 2021. Tasted two times.

From: Enticingly Fallible: Bordeaux 2021 En Primeur (May 2022)
The 2021 Larcis Ducasse was picked from 29 September until 11 October at a respectable 34hL/ha, representing 65% of the total production this year. It has an almost gentle, atypically understated bouquet with brambly red fruit, wilted rose petal and light undergrowth scents. The palate is linear and structured, far removed from the occasionally opulent Larcis Ducasse of warming seasons. Quite saline in the mouth, this is distinguished by a liberal sprinkling of cracked black and Spanish Padron pepper towards the finely persistent finish. Classy and full of character.
