Description
The Carruades de Lafite is the second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild and has similar characteristics to the Grand Vin, but with its own personality linked to a higher proportion of Merlot and to specific plots of land used to produce Carruades. The name comes from the Carruades Plateau, a group of plots acquired in 1845 just adjacent to the vines on the Château's hilltop.
Château Lafite-Rothschild has made one of the most impressive wines of 2022 and the second wine Carruades de Lafite is also absolutely good in 2022. Carruades de Lafite comprises 38% of the production. The 2022 Carruades de Lafite is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. In the glass the wine has an attractive colour, dark and deep. The nose is characteristic of this vintage - namely ripe and fresh at the same time, with notes of blackcurrant and black fruit. The attack is simple on the palate but then the wine unfolds to express all its volume. The tannins are fine and precise. The high percentage of Cabernet, both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, provides a lot of tension in the finish. Nice balance between ripeness and freshness. Juicy, fresh acidity. Blackcurrants, blackberries, liquorice It is a rich Carruades with very good ageing potential and will release its full potential in around 6 to 8 years.

About Carruades de Lafite
Overview
Carruades de Lafite is the second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, one of the most prestigious and historic wineries in the Bordeaux region of France. The château is located in the Pauillac appellation of the Médoc, on the left bank of the Gironde River.
History
Carruades de Lafite takes its name from the Plateau des Carruades, a nearby parcel acquired by Château Lafite Rothschild in the 19th century. These vineyards were originally used to produce a separate wine, but over time the grapes were incorporated into the château's second wine.
Vineyards
The vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild cover approximately 112 hectares and are planted with mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The soil consists mainly of deep gravel layers, which are ideal for growing grapes.
Vinification
Carruades de Lafite is made with the same care and attention as the château's first wine, Château Lafite Rothschild. The main difference between the two wines lies in the selection of the grapes and the composition of the blend. Carruades de Lafite generally has a higher proportion of Merlot compared to the first wine, resulting in a slightly softer and more accessible style.
Tasting notes
Carruades de Lafite is known for its elegant and refined character. Some typical characteristics of this wine are:
- Color : Medium to deep garnet purple.
- Aromas : Rich aromas of black cherries, cassis, redcurrant jam, kirsch, cedarwood, pencil shavings and sometimes a hint of raspberry leaves.
- Taste : Medium-bodied with an excellent balance between fruity notes and a fine, well-integrated tannin structure. The wine has a lively freshness and ends with a long, persistent finish.
- Ageing : Although Carruades de Lafite is attractive in its youth, the wine can also age for several decades, developing complexity and depth.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Carruades de Lafite is a real showstopper. I don’t remember tasting a Carruades quite like the 2022, a wine that combines the richness of the year with tons of supporting structure. Super-ripe red-fleshed fruit, blood orange, mint, cinnamon and rose petal all race across the palate, supported by bright citrus-driven acids that keep the flavors vibrant. I can’t wait to see how this turns out.
- By Antonio Galloni on April 2023
Saskia de Rothschild is one of the most forward-thinking proprietors of her generation. All the Bordeaux vineyards are now certified organic. Perhaps more important is her decision to pull out four hectares of vineyards at Lafite-Rothschild to plant them with other crops with the goal of promoting biodiversity. As for the 2022s, they capture the best the vintage had to offer.

The vineyard of Château Lafite Rothschild consists of three main areas: The slopes around the Château, the Carruades plateau to the west and a 4.5 hectare site in Saint-Estèphe. Its area is 112 hectares. The soil consists of fine, deeply ground mixed with windblown sand on a well-drained and well-incorporated tertiary limestone subsoil. The grape varieties grown here are Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Here the first stones were laid, the winegrowers' houses were built and prepared for something unusual to happen. As the years passed, the house overlooking this hill got bigger and a wisteria vine climbed the walls of generations of families to see how preserving this ecosystem has always been the ultimate priority. 150 years ago, Baroness Betty, wife of Baron James, planted the huge oak trees that separate our vineyard from the marshes. They, their children and grandchildren, the families of winegrowers die with them, work conscientiously to protect this impeccable creation that has been bequeathed to nature. They have taken great care to preserve this microcosm of forests and marshes, flora and fauna amidst the vines of Château Lafite Rothschild thrive in this almost wild osmosis.
As the ultimate witness to this protected land, some of the vines still gracefully show off their 140 years of ungrafted life. They escaped the phylloxera which, however, spared no one else! This infallible part of the vines continues to elude the winegrowers, the same ones who form, protect and nurture it, from one harvest year to the next, trying to refine this perfect composition that amazes them time and time again. It may not be a coincidence, of course, that Lafite earned the title of "First of the First" at Napoleon III's World's Fair. Nor will it be a coincidence, if others will speak of it long after us… Each barrel is tasted individually and only the best is selected for the final blend. After blending, the wine matures for 15 months in new oak barrels. Fermentation takes place for 15 days at a controlled temperature of 18°C. Only vines older than 10 years are used for the Grand Vin Château Lafite Rothschild. While each vintage is unique, there is usually a large portion of Cabernet Sauvignon, then Merlot, with a small contribution of Petit Verdot.
