Winery Herdade do Sobroso and the Alentejo region

Herdade do Sobroso is located in the heart of the Alentejo, in the Vidigueira sub-region, one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. The estate combines viticulture with nature conservation and game management, spread over more than 1600 hectares. Since 2002, the winery has been run by Filipe Teixeira Pinto and his wife Sofia, who produce characterful wines with modern techniques and respect for the terroir. The region is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters, which ensures ripe and concentrated grapes.

Origin and grapes of the AnAs Tinto 2023

The AnAs Tinto 2023 is a Vinho Regional Alentejano and is composed of Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and Aragonez (the Portuguese variant of Tempranillo). These grape varieties are perfectly suited to the warm climate of the Alentejo. The soil consists of a mixture of loam and clay, which contributes to the complexity and structure of the wine. The grapes are harvested by hand to ensure optimum quality.

Vinification and maturation of this Portuguese red wine

After manual harvesting, the grapes are transported to the cellar, where fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. This is followed by a post-fermentative maceration of no less than 21 days, which gives the wine extra depth and aromatic richness. There is no wood aging, which means the emphasis is on the pure fruit and the terroir.

Color, smell and taste of the Herdade do Sobroso AnAs Tinto

This AnAs Tinto shows itself in the glass with a deep ruby red color. The nose is intense and fruity, with aromas of dark forest fruits such as blackberries and plums, complemented by a hint of herbs. In the mouth the wine is full and lively, with a firm structure, vibrant acids and a beautiful balance. The aftertaste is energetic with beautiful freshness. This is an absolute friend to everyone and we like to drink this wine slightly chilled (around 12 degrees).

Wine and food pairings with the AnAs Tinto 2023

This powerful and aromatic red wine combines well with a variety of dishes. Here are some tasty suggestions:

  • Roasted lamb chops with rosemary and garlic – The spicy notes and juicy meat complement the structure of the wine well.
  • Beef and root vegetable stew – The deep flavors of the stew are matched by the intensity of the wine.
  • Eggplant Parmigiana – The combination of tomato, melted cheese and roasted vegetables goes well with the fruity and spicy profile.
  • Grilled Portobello with Balsamic and Thyme – A vegetarian dish that offers enough depth for this powerful red wine.
  • Venison roast with a red wine and blackcurrant sauce – The wine enhances the gamey flavours and goes perfectly with the berry sauce.
  • Beef fillet with truffle risotto – The creaminess of the risotto and the umami flavour of the truffle find an exciting contrast in the lively acidity of the wine.

In the soft Alentejo light you’ll find Herdade do Sobroso. A place where wine and landscape go hand in hand, without fuss. Perfect for anyone who loves authenticity.

Herdade do Sobroso history & location

Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira, in the warm heart of the Alentejo, close to the Alqueva dam and on the banks of the Guadiana River. The estate was purchased in the early 2000s by the family of Sofia and Filipe, who were still students at the time. She studied animal science, he studied oenology. Together they built a wine estate that has since become a well-known name in the region.

The location is quite special. In the north, the Mendro mountains protect the vineyards, while in the south the plains stretch endlessly. To the east flows the Guadiana River, bringing freshness and a unique microclimate. This gives the wines of Sobroso their extra depth and character.

Which grape varieties grow here?

Across 60 hectares of vineyards you’ll find both native and international grape varieties. For red wines: Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, and Petit Verdot. For whites: Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho, Verdelho, and Perrum. This mix allows them to produce both powerful blends and fresh, fruit-driven styles.

Specialties of Herdade do Sobroso

One of the highlights in their portfolio is the ‘Anas’ range, named after the river that flowed through this region in Roman times. The gravelly soils and the proximity of water result in elegant, structured wines.

A few fun facts

  • The estate covers more than 1,600 hectares, with thousands of cork oaks alongside the vineyards.
  • There’s more to experience than just wine: jeep safaris, hot-air balloon rides at sunrise, kayaking, and cycling through the vineyards turn it into a full experience.
  • The estate restaurant serves typical Alentejo dishes, complemented by traditional sweets such as sericaia and torta de laranja.

Herdade do Sobroso as an experience

Herdade do Sobroso is more than a winery. It’s a place where landscape, gastronomy, and hospitality come together. You don’t just taste the wines, you also feel the calm and openness of the Alentejo countryside.
