Description
about Alvina Pernot in Meursault
Domaine Alvina Pernot is an emerging estate in the Côte de Beaune, run by Alvina Pernot and her husband, Philippe Abadie. As the granddaughter of the renowned Paul Pernot, Alvina combines family tradition with a modern, precise approach to winemaking. The cellar in Puligny-Montrachet is recently built and equipped with all the necessary facilities to vinify small volumes with the utmost care. Only 80 percent of the grapes come from family vineyards; the rest are sourced from friendly estates through must exchange. In a short time, the estate has built a strong reputation for wines that are pure, focused, and remarkably elegant. The style is understated, with subtle oak notes and an emphasis on terroir and structure.
vineyard and location of Meursault 1er Cru Le Pièce Sous Le Bois
The Premier Cru Le Pièce Sous Le Bois is located south of the village of Meursault, near Blagny. The vineyard is situated on chalky clay soils with excellent drainage and a slight east-facing slope. The Pernot family's plot was replanted with Chardonnay in the early 2000s, having previously borne red grapes. This replanting has resulted in wines with a striking combination of power and tension, a characteristic that reveals the Meursault terroirs in their purest form. The location, slightly higher up the slope, yields fruit with crisp acidity and pronounced minerality, while the sunlight ensures soft ripeness and a refined texture.
vinification and style
Alvina Pernot's vinification process focuses on preserving the vineyard's natural expression. The grapes are harvested by hand, carefully pressed, and ferment spontaneously in oak barrels. Only a small portion of the oak is new; the rest consists of one- to four-year-old barrels, to keep the fruit and minerality at the forefront. Maturation typically lasts eleven to twelve months, after which the wine is bottled without excessive fining or filtration. The style of this estate is clear, precise, and elegant, with a fine balance between creaminess and tension—typical of the best Meursaults.
character of the 2022 Meursault Le Pièce Sous Le Bois
There are no official international ratings for the 2022 vintage yet, but previous reviews provide an excellent overview of this wine's character. According to The Wine Advocate (2020 vintage, 92 points), the Meursault Le Pièce Sous Le Bois features aromas of citrus zest, white flowers, freshly baked bread, and ripe apple, with a refined mineral undertone and a salty, lingering finish. The wine was described as seamless and inviting, with a strikingly fresh energy and elegance. Vinous (also 92 points) emphasized its nuanced, spicy character with notes of almond and walnut, and a lively, slightly wild personality that pairs particularly well with refined or Asian dishes.
These previous vintages demonstrate that Le Pièce Sous Le Bois is a wine with layers and character. The 2022 harvest, originating from a balanced, warm summer with healthy grapes and excellent phenolic ripeness, is expected to offer the same combination of tension, breadth, and length. It combines the depth of classic Meursault with the precision and energy characteristic of Alvina Pernot wines.
serving tips and storage potential
The 2022 Meursault Le Pièce Sous Le Bois is best served at 11 to 13 degrees Celsius in a large white wine glass. A brief aeration helps the complex aromas fully develop. Young bottles reveal vibrant citrus, floral notes, and minerality, while a few years of bottle aging will give the wine more roundness, brioche notes, and nutty depth. Judging from previous vintages, the wine's cellaring potential is certainly between ten and fifteen years. As the wine ages, it develops more texture and elegance without losing its fresh core.
why this wine makes an impression
The 1er Cru Le Pièce Sous Le Bois is one of the most refined expressions of Meursault in the Alvina Pernot range. The wine combines freshness and power, with a structure that invites aging. The subtle use of oak, the natural balance, and the focus on terroir create an expression that is pure, energetic, and gastronomic. This is a wine for the connoisseur who seeks elegance without excess—a quiet strength with a long future in the glass.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Pucelles opens in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp stone fruit and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, ample and saline, it's a touch more textural and enveloping than the Caillerets, though it remains one of the finer-boned, leaner cuvées in the range.
Alvina Pernot was awaiting the imminent birth of her latest child when I visited, so I tasted this year with her husband Philippe at their new winery on Puligny's Rue de Bois, a facility that will give them all the space they need to master the élevage and, increasingly, the pressing of the fruit that produces their wines. Readers will recall that, after working for three years at her grandfather's Domaine Paul Pernot, Alvina and Philippe had set up a tiny domaine & maison in Puligny-Montrachet. All of their 2018 vintage was produced from Alvina's share of the Pernot family holdings, but only the Puligny-Montrachet La Rue Aux Vaches was harvested and pressed (vertically) in house, as the rest of the cuvées come from Domaine Paul Pernot in must; that held true in 2019 too, though the range was supplemented by several new appellations, the result of exchanges with other growers. In 2020, this label's most successful vintage to date, La Rue Aux Vaches is joined by another Puligny lieu-dit cuvée that's pressed in house, the Clos des Noyers Brets. Within the Pernot holdings, Alvina and her husband favor earlier-picked fruit and higher-altitude parcels, but it's these cuvées that are harvested and pressed in house that really give the measure of what we can expect in the years to come. Readers will note that all the wines are bottled under high-quality natural cork.

From: Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)
The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Clos des Folatières 1er Cru, which comes from Alvina's family, possesses one of the most satisfying and complex bouquets amongst their six Puligny wines: green apple, Golden Delicious, Mirabelle, crushed stone, and just a touch of persimmon. The palate is very well-balanced with beautifully integrated oak. Vibrant and slightly flinty on the finish, this feels long in the mouth. Classy.
- By Neal Martin on October 2023
I met Philippe Abadie, Alvina Pernot’s husband, over the weekend. When I visited last year, their winery on the fringe of Puligny was still under construction. Now, it is completed with all the mod-cons: swish tasting room, electric car charger outside and clean as a whistle. These have been very impressive wines since I first tasted the 2020s, and the 2022s have expanded the line-up to around 20 cuvées. “Around 80% of the production is from Alvina’s family and 20% exchange of musts with friends,” he tells me. “Two are in Saint-Aubin. In 2020, we made a Meursault Charmes, and now we have Les Perrières. We began the harvest on August 28. We don’t use a lot of new oak, but a lot of one to four-year-old barrels, with quite a short aging period of 11 and 12 months. Sometimes, we would love to age a few months more, especially for the Grands Crus, but we don’t have the space. Then again, we don’t use a lot of new oak, and we want to see the terroir in our wines. The 2022 vintage was the largest ever at 30,000 bottles; honestly, we are at the limit for two people working at the winery. Everything was bottled just before the harvest. We will begin taking back some red parcels in the future from Alvina’s father. From 2023, we will stop the Saint-Romain due to space restrictions as we will have a Champs Gain, and our focus is upon Puligny Premier Crus.” You should definitely look out for this recent addition to the Puligny. At the entry-level end, seek out their 2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Les Femelottes or Puligny-Montrachet Clos des Noyers Bret. Up the scale, the Meursaults from Les Perrières and Poruzots. The Pulignys from Les Caillerets and Les Pucelles are enchanting, precise and focused with saline finishes. If you can find it, the 2022 Chevaliers-Montrachet is fabulous, though the Bâtard-Montrachet is nipping at its ankles.
