Description
"This blessed plot, this earth, this realm..." this famous line comes from William Shakespeare's King Richard II, the source of Realm's – and the name of the Estate. Since 2003, Realm Cellars has been making The Bard. This Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend as a tribute to the great wines of Bordeaux's left bank. The Bard is a dense, heavy and concentrated wine made from the very best Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Napa Valley. The composition of the wine varies from year to year, although Cabernet Sauvignon always dominates together with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and / or Petit Verdot. The Bard is a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot,. The art is in blending the grapes from the different (top) vineyards, which they have elevated to an art form at Realm.
The RealmThe Bard opens immediately with an explosion of fruit with delicious acidity and a beautiful texture. Only around 2000 cases of this great wine are made. The wine is elegant, clean with a dense purple color, sweet blackcurrant and blackberry mixed with licorice and charcoal. It is full-bodied with a layered mouthfeel. The wine is certainly drinkable now but will improve even more with a few years in the cellar or wine fridge.

A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, the fruit for the 2019 The Bard fetches from Calistoga to Coombsville, including portions from illustrious vineyards such as Dr. Crane, Moonracer, Houyi and Larkmead.
Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose bursts with bold notions of blackcurrant pastilles, wild blueberries and chocolate-covered cherries, plus suggestions of violets, star anise and unsmoked cigars. The full-bodied palate is chock-full of bright, crunchy black and blue fruits, framed by very fine-grained tannins and beautiful freshness, finishing with lots of floral and exotic spice layers. This 2019 is particularly spectacular, drinking beautifully now and yet has the stuffing to cellar beautifully for 20 years+.
“2019 was a great vintage, following 2018,” said Realm’s winemaker, Benoit Touquette. “A bit like 2012 and 2013. 2019 is more fleshy and expressive at this stage than 2018. It has the flesh and the body of 2013, with nice ripe phenolics. I love the acidity and texture, matched by the aromatics. Also, 2019 was a consistent crop—straightforward to work with. We racked a lot less this year, to keep that energy and freshness,” he explained
“Tempest and Bard are our gateway to new consumers,” proprietor Scott Becker added. “The Bard accounts for nearly half of our entire production volume. With The Tempest, we really want to promote Merlot. You really need the Merlot mindset, to be focused on how to make great Merlot.”
2019 is clearly a vintage that plays to Realm’s vineyard and visionary strengths. This is a strong lineup of new releases with a lineup of wines that are sure to excite loyal fans and will likely turn a few new heads along the way.
2020 is, however, another story. 2020 was the year of not just one but two significant fire episodes, rendering most Napa Valley grapes potentially smoke tainted. After considerable monitoring and careful consideration, Realm took the difficult decision not to bottle any 2020 wines for public release except a rosé—La Fe—produced from an early harvest of Merlot coming from Farella vineyard in Coombsville.

The purity of fruit here is impressive with blackcurrants, bark and black mushrooms. Full-bodied but light-footed and fresh with integrated tannins that melt into the wine. Real transparency and focus. 83% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot, 6% cabernet franc, 3% petit verdot and 1% petite sirah. So drinkable but can age as well.

Obtaining the grapes from the best Napa Valley vineyards has been Realm Estates' philosophy since its inception in 2002. Realm's wines have since become the gems of Napa Valley. The wine portfolio includes both vineyard bottlings and proprietary blends. The single vineyard wines are place-driven terroir. The blends such as the famous The Bard are made from varieties in the tradition of the great wines of Bordeaux. The Realm wines now have a cult status and are especially famous because they are accessible fairly quickly but can also rest for decades in the cellar - so something for everyone.
