Description
The 2021 Houyi Vineyard from Realm Cellars is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Houyi vineyard on Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley, California. Situated at an elevation of almost 1,300 feet, the vineyard is known for its volcanic soils that contribute to the concentration and complexity of the grapes.
In the glass, the wine presents itself with a deep garnet color. The bouquet opens with powerful aromas of blackcurrant jam, stewed plums and fruit cake, complemented by nuances of charcoal, wild sage, mossy bark and black olives. The palate offers a full body with firm, grainy tannins and a refreshing acidity that supports the densely packed black fruit notes, resulting in a long and earthy finish.
With a limited production run of less than 1,000 cases, this wine is a sought-after choice for collectors and lovers of premium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The combination of Pritchard Hill’s unique terroir and Realm Cellars’ craftsmanship results in a wine that is both enjoyable now and has potential for further aging.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard Pritchard Hill is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, all coming from the Houyi vineyards on the Nine Suns property.
Deep garnet-purple colored, it features all the hallmarks of a classic great Cabernet, revealing notes of crème de cassis, stewed black plums and mulberries with touches of cedar chest, tobacco leaf, crushed rocks, wild sage and iron ore. Full-bodied, the concentrated palate is densely packed with plum preserves and cassis flavors, framed by firm, grainy tannins and beautiful freshness, ultimately delivering a nice, long savory/earthy finish.
“2019 was a great vintage, following 2018,” said Realm’s winemaker, Benoit Touquette. “A bit like 2012 and 2013. 2019 is more fleshy and expressive at this stage than 2018. It has the flesh and the body of 2013, with nice ripe phenolics. I love the acidity and texture, matched by the aromatics. Also, 2019 was a consistent crop—straightforward to work with. We racked a lot less this year, to keep that energy and freshness,” he explained
“Tempest and Bard are our gateway to new consumers,” proprietor Scott Becker added. “The Bard accounts for nearly half of our entire production volume. With The Tempest, we really want to promote Merlot. You really need the Merlot mindset, to be focused on how to make great Merlot.”
2019 is clearly a vintage that plays to Realm’s vineyard and visionary strengths. This is a strong lineup of new releases with a lineup of wines that are sure to excite loyal fans and will likely turn a few new heads along the way.
2020 is, however, another story. 2020 was the year of not just one but two significant fire episodes, rendering most Napa Valley grapes potentially smoke tainted. After considerable monitoring and careful consideration, Realm took the difficult decision not to bottle any 2020 wines for public release except a rosé—La Fe—produced from an early harvest of Merlot coming from Farella vineyard in Coombsville.

This is a fascinating sauvignon blanc that begins with very opulent and exotic fruit character of mangos and citrus, then delivers a palate of strength and phenolic tension. It’s layered and impressive. Drink or hold.

From: The 2021 Napa Valley Cabernets, Part One (Dec 2023)
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard is silky, delicate and very pretty. In that sense, it is a classic wine for this year. Crushed red berry fruit, cedar, mint, tobacco and a kiss of French oak all grace this unusually supple, racy Cabernet Sauvignon. Beautifully persistent, the 2021 is all understatement and class. This is an especially mid-weight style for Pritchard Hill. Perhaps because of that, the new oak is a touch prominent. The 2021 is a blend of five blocks off this site, all Cabernet Sauvignon. I expect this wine will become more complex as Realm now has access to the entire property.

Realm is, without question, the most ambitious winery in Napa Valley today. Realizing the perils of depending solely on purchased fruit, principals Scott Becker and Benoit Touquette have put together an enviable collection of estate vineyards, starting with Hartwell in Stags Leap, then Farella in Coombsville and most recently Houyi, ensuring that Realm will always have a dependable supply of estate fruit. It’s a bold move that has been matched by very few other players in Napa Valley and only one on a large scale that I can think of. I tasted the 2021s at Houyi, a spectacular site on Pritchard Hill that also affords striking views of the area. The wines are seriously impressive and also show a gradual move towards a style that favors a bit more vibrancy than in the past. "It was a year with very small berries and high tannins," Touquette explained. "We had to be careful to not extract too much."

Obtaining the grapes from the best Napa Valley vineyards has been Realm Estates' philosophy since its inception in 2002. Realm's wines have since become the gems of Napa Valley. The wine portfolio includes both vineyard bottlings and proprietary blends. The single vineyard wines are place-driven terroir. The blends such as the famous The Bard are made from varieties in the tradition of the great wines of Bordeaux. The Realm wines now have a cult status and are especially famous because they are accessible fairly quickly but can also rest for decades in the cellar - so something for everyone.
