Family-owned Rapaura Springs was founded in 2005 and ranks among the top 10 largest wineries in Marlborough. Purity and purity is what Rapaura Springs stands for. For example, the water used for the vines comes from the Rapaura Spring water source, far away from the vineyards. This crystal clear and pure water from the Wairau River flows through the rocks and takes 6 months to reach the vineyards. The word 'Rapaura' therefore means: flowing water. There is great attention to detail within the New Zealand winery and the makers strive to make the most exceptional, clean and pure wines. All wines are sustainably produced.
The 2021 vintage was one of the earliest and shortest ever. The growing season was the third in a series of drought years, with stress on the vines exacerbated by some serious storms. The combination of early frosts and poor flowering resulted in lower yields and smaller trusses than usual. This, combined with the dry conditions, has resulted in disease levels being incredibly low this year, resulting in better flavors and pristine fruit with good concentration, good tannins and good color but with serious low yields of up to 40% less than previous years. So in summary, 2021 is one of the most beautiful vintages with good concentration and intensity of taste but with a seriously low yield.
The Sauvignon Blanc grapes for this wine are grown in the Dillons Point and lower Wairau sub-regions, which are known for their expressive aromas and ripe fruit flavor - hands down one of the best places to grow the best Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough. The Rapaura winery is the only facility in this sub-region, meaning the grapes can be pressed immediately after harvest, minimizing skin contact. This allows one to capture all the expressive aromas and fruit flavors, without bitter phenols. After pressing, the juice was settled and then cool fermented in stainless steel to preserve the vibrant flavors and aromas. The wine then spends at least 6 months sur lie on steel, which gives the Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc Reserve a dose of extra complexity. Each sip is bursting with juicy flavors of passion fruit, tropical fruit and black currant. The fruit taste is balanced with fresh acidity and a pronounced salty minerality, which together provide a delicious aftertaste.
