A Barbera as it should be. Not like the many run-of-the-mill Barberas that are mass-produced and command exorbitant prices, but a carefully crafted Barbera full of black fruit, oak, cocoa, and a hint of vanilla. Simply TOP. The Barbera d'Alba DOC Du Gir comes from Barbera vineyards located in the municipality of Alba at an altitude of 225 meters, and these vineyards are over 60 years old. The Barbera grapes must be harvested between late September and the first decade of October. The Du Gir vineyard is the last Barbera vineyard to be harvested. The grapes are destemmed and then pressed. The maceration process lasts approximately ten days at a temperature of 30 to 32°C. The wine is aged in new oak barrels (225-liter barriques) for 18 months. After a very light filtering, the wine is finally bottled almost two years after the harvest, but the Barbera d'Alba DOC Du Gir then remains in the Montaribaldi cellars for at least another six months before it is ready to be released onto the market.
The Dü Gir vineyard is a very old one that, as Luciano says, "has seen it all" and consistently produces top-quality grapes year after year. The Dü Gir is undoubtedly one of the finest Barberas available and is a wine that ages beautifully. Ten years or more is no problem.
In the glass, the wine is ruby red with black-violet reflections. Very fruity, with notes of black forest berries and plum jam prominently displayed, complemented by a blend of cinnamon, vanilla, cocoa, and tobacco. Full and rounded, with a refreshing acidity that's just right. This wine pairs wonderfully with pasta dishes, game (venison, deer), veal and pork, roasted or raw, and aged cheeses.
The Montaribaldi winery is a historically family-run business, nestled in the Langhe hills in the small village of Barbaresco. Montaribaldi's grapes grow among the vineyards of Angelo Gaja's famous winery. They're certainly not the least fortunate neighbors. The owners of the Montaribaldi winery, brothers Luciano and Roberto Taliano, are fortunate to have their plots of land scattered throughout the Langhe and Monferrato hills. Wine has been produced here for centuries, and even UNESCO has recognized the interplay of man and nature, recently adding this region to its prestigious World Heritage List. Although the Montaribaldi winery has existed for much longer, the brothers have been in the wine business for a relatively short time, having been in business since 1994. However, together with winemaker Carlo Arnulfo, they are already producing exquisite Piedmont wines with excellent value for money.
The family produces some of the most famous wines from the Piedmont region: Barbaresco DOCG, Barolo DOCG, Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera d'Asti DOCG, and Roero Arneis. They offer a complete range of wines made from grapes typical of this region. A key characteristic of this winery is that the wines originate in Piedmont, are always recognizable as "Montaribaldi," and are sustainably grown and produced. As they call it, making "vineyard wines" sets them apart. Not a chemistry set, but a healthy vineyard produces the typical Montaribaldi Terroir wines.
The Barbera grape is known for its high acidity and was once the wine of the people due to its large yields and wide versatility. Times have changed, and Barbera wines have made a significant leap in quality. This Barbera from Montaribaldi comes from older vines from the vineyard called Dü Gir. By aging the wine in new wooden barriques for a year, a beautiful balance is created between the characteristically fresh Barbera acidity and the round tannins of the oak. The Talianos then let the bottles mature for another eight months in their cellar before selling this wine. You can taste the love for winemaking here, and this quality makes the Barbera Dü Gir unbeatable, especially at this price.

1. Roasted chicken with thyme, lemon and roasted garlic
The Barbera's fresh acidity enlivens the juicy meat and cuts beautifully through the fat. The wine's spicy notes enhance the aromas of the thyme and roasted garlic.
2. Tagliatelle with aubergine, tomato and basil
The savory flavor of grilled eggplant and the acidity of the tomato find a natural balance in the wine's fresh, fruity style. The spicy note of basil complements the peppery edge of the Barbera.
3. Pizza with prosciutto, arugula and Parmesan
A combination of salty ham, spicy greens, and savory cheese is beautifully rounded out by the cherry fruit and fresh acidity. The creamy texture of the cheese is enlivened by the wine.
4. Veal meatballs in tomato sauce with rosemary
The juicy texture of the meat and the tangy sauce are a classic pairing with Barbera. The rosemary emphasizes the wine's herbal background.
5. Risotto with roasted beetroot, goat cheese and walnuts
The earthy sweetness of beetroot, the creaminess of goat cheese and the nuttiness of walnut create a playful and layered combination that pairs well with the red fruit and acidity in the wine.
6. Ravioli filled with duck ragout and orange peel in a sage-butter sauce
The rich and spicy duck filling is beautifully supported by the Barbera's structure, while the citrus notes harmonize beautifully with the wine's freshness and fruity intensity.

The 'azienda agricola Montaribaldi' is historically a family business, located in the middle of the Langhe hills in the small village of Barbaresco. The Montaribaldi winery has been owned by the Taliano family from the beginning and has 19 hectares in the Barberesco area. In 1994 Luciano and Roberto took over the company from their father and immediately decided to only produce high quality wines. It is still a real family business, father Guiseppe and mother Carla as well as the wives of the owners, Antonella and Franca all cooperate. At present they produce about 75000 bottles a year. Thanks to the perfect location of the vineyards of Montaribaldi and the typical white soil of the hills in Langhe, the elegant wines that come from them have a long life. Note that the land around the Montaribaldi vineyards is from Gaja. The family makes some of the most famous wines from the Piedmont region: Barbaresco DOCG, Barolo DOCG, Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Roero Arneis. They offer a complete range of wines, from grapes typical of this region.
