About the harvest and climate of the 2021 Michele Chiarlo Phaset Barbaresco

Carefully crafted by Stefano Chiarlo, the Barbaresco DOCG Phaset 2021 is an expression of a year with a remarkable start thanks to snowfall and rain that laid a 60 cm blanket over the Langhe vineyards in the early months. March surprised with an absence of rain and temperatures above average, which led to early vegetation. These conditions suggested a hot vintage and early harvest, but the opposite turned out to be true: temperatures in April and May dropped, which slowed early vegetative development.

By mid-May, all signs pointed to a later harvest. The vines grew slowly, night temperatures were low and the wind felt increasingly cold. By early June, all varieties were in full bloom, with some Nebbiolo and Barbera buds already set. The last two weeks of June were hot, with temperatures within the seasonal average and storms bringing 20-30 mm of rain. June ushered in a long, hot but not scorching and dry summer that lasted until September, with milder daytime temperatures. The last two weeks of August were spent thinning out the most overgrown vineyards. The harvest took place in the usual period, with healthy and perfectly ripe grapes of a rare quality. Despite significant weather fluctuations in spring, 2021 proved to be an excellent vintage thanks to the excellent climate that followed.

Made from the nebbiolo grape from Barbaresco, with the first production in 2014, this wine comes from the Faset vineyard covering an area of 1 hectare, planted in 1965. The soil is gray-white lime marl with sand veins, rich in minerals including magnesium and manganese. Located on the top of a hill with a south-west exposure at an altitude of 210-270 meters above sea level, with the Guyot method and approximately 4,500 vines per hectare.

2021 Michele Chiarlo Phaset Barbaresco vinification process

The vinification involves fermentation for 17/18 days with the skins in 55hl oak barrels, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels. The wine matures for at least 2 years, of which 18 months in large barrels for refinement in the bottle.

Tasting notes of the 2021 Michele Chiarlo Phaset Barbaresco

This Barbaresco shows a garnet color with brilliant shades, a nose that is spacious and aristocratic with notes of dried rose petals, small red fruits and an elegant hint of minerals combined with fine spices. The palate is of great structure, elegant and inviting, with a clear minerality and the dense texture of fine tannins.

Ideally served with wild rabbit with juniper berries, roast pheasant, agnolotti with roast gravy, and well-matured cheeses, at a recommended serving temperature of 18° C

Vineyard for 2021 Michele Chiarlo Phaset Barbaresco

Michele Chiarlo founded his winery in 1956 with one clear goal: to acquire vineyards in the best crus in Piemonte and thereby make wines that capture the essence of the terroir. Michele Chiarlo started his wine company in 1956. The region where he was born was chosen, Canelli, near Asti in the Region of Piedmont. Here he could make his dream come true in the most unbelievably beautiful wine region in the world.

Tradition, discipline and passion with great care for the land and nature were the most important starting points for him. The company now has 120 hectares of vineyards in Monferrato, the Langhe, (La Morra and Barolo) and the Gavi regions. He has also been the driving force behind the new Barbera Nizza DOC. At Michele Chiarlo, the focus of each vineyard is on the individual terroir and the individuality of the wines. From 2022, the top model, the Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio, will be the first Barolo Cru to be offered via the Place de Bordeaux (this is where selected wine merchants around the world are allowed to buy, including, of course, Grandcru wines).

Michele Chiarlo is one of the few wineries to have a star in the Gambero Rosso. You only get this star if you drink 10x a tre bicchieri or-too-three red glasses, the highest rating of a wine.
