Description
the story behind Château de Beaucastel
Château de Beaucastel is a historic estate in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Perrin family has managed the winery for many years and operates with a clear vision of quality and sustainability. The vineyards are fully organic and are known for their diverse soil types. Limestone, sand, and the characteristic rounded pebbles produce ripe grapes with a good balance of structure and freshness.
The estate is a leading reference for white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines come from old vines with deep roots, resulting in richness, aromatic precision, and a distinctive style. Beaucastel focuses on Roussanne, which, in this region, offers exceptional tension and depth.
the terroir and grapes of Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is located between Orange and Avignon. The climate is warm and sunny, but the mistral brings a cooling breeze. The soils consist of limestone, loam, sand, and large pebbles. White Châteauneuf-du-Pape is rare and comes from limited plots.
For the 2021 Blanc, the estate uses approximately eighty percent Roussanne. The remaining grapes are varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, and Clairette. Roussanne provides ripe stone fruit, structure, and a full body. The other grapes add freshness, citrus, and additional aromatic nuance.
characteristics of Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2021
The 2021 Blanc displays a combination of ripe fruit, floral notes, and subtle spices. According to The Wine Advocate (source: The Wine Advocate, score 93-95), the wine has aromas of peach, pineapple, and a light spiciness of cinnamon and nutmeg. The reviewer describes the wine as full-bodied, concentrated, and silky in texture, with a long and clean finish.
The style of the 2021 Blanc is rich yet balanced. Its structure is broad, and the acidity keeps the wine vibrant. The combination of ripe fruit and floral notes makes this vintage immediately appealing but also suitable for short aging.
Cesar Perrin's role in the vineyard and cellar
The winery and vineyards are managed by Cesar Perrin, who oversees both the vineyard practices and the cellar. The Perrin family remains involved in blending decisions and strategy. The estate is increasingly working with new methods to balance alcohol levels. For example, various green manures are being tested and used as mulch to slow sugar buildup in the grapes.
More open-top barrels are used in vinification, which lowers the temperature during fermentation and can limit alcohol formation. These adjustments result in wines with greater freshness and better balance without losing ripe fruit.
harvest and vinification of the 2021 Blanc
The grapes are harvested early in the day to preserve freshness. Each plot is pressed separately to respect the differences in terroir. Some of the wine is fermented in oak barrels and some in stainless steel. This approach adds complexity without the oak dominating the wine. Maturation on fine lees gives the wine extra body and texture.
The balance between ripeness and freshness is a key element in 2021. The lower alcohol levels noted in the cellar contribute to a more energetic profile compared to warmer years.
color, aroma and taste of the 2021 Blanc
The color is light golden yellow with a bright sheen. The aroma reveals peach, pineapple, white flowers, and subtle spices. The palate is full and concentrated. The texture is silky smooth and the structure broad. The finish is long and reveals ripe fruit notes with a slight spicy nuance. The wine remains balanced by fresh acidity that supports the rich body.

Roughly 80% Roussanne, with the balance a mix of other permitted white varieties, Beaucastel's 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is a fine, fine effort. Tangerine and peach notes are plump and round on the full-bodied palate, which is quite rich and plush in feel yet long and harmonious on the finish. The ability to be so ripe and sumptuous yet balanced is truly remarkable.
On my last two visits to this large, historic property, I've been greeted by Cesar Perrin, who now manages all of the family's vineyards and supervises the winemaking at Château de Beaucastel. Other family members continue to be involved in the myriad wine-related business decisions, including participating in the annual blending process.
The big news is that the new, state-of-the-art winery facility is inching closer to completion. Built largely of rammed earth from the site, and designed to have a big portion of the cooling load handled by ambient winds evaporating stored rainwater, it will set new standards in sustainability (assuming it all works the way it is supposed to).
In the vineyards, experiments with various cover crop regimes rolled as mulch are taking place with a view toward slowing sugar accumulation in the grapes and reining in potential alcohol levels. The results are intriguing, with the 2021 samples I tried from barrel coming in 0.5% to 0.7% lower in finished alcohol and with slightly lower pHs compared to plots farmed more traditionally, yet they wines still exhibit dark fruit and supple tannins. "I don't want to change," explained Cesar, "but I'm afraid to have too much alcohol and too low acidity." Along similar lines, there's been a bit more use of open-top vats for fermentation, which can also bring down alcohol levels.
Overall, the 2021s here have turned out very well, with Cesar calling it, "a nice vintage, in quantity and quality."

Drinking Window
2023 - 2033
From: Châteauneuf-du-Pape New Releases: Welcome to the Pleasuredome (Jun 2023)
Composed of biodynamically cultivated grapes, the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is a blend of 80% Roussanne, 10% Grenache Blanc and the remainder split between Bourboulenc and Piquepoul. Lively aromas of honeysuckle, acacia, grapefruit, lemon peel and white peach waft from the glass, with a touch of reduction. Slightly oily-textured and medium to full-bodied, it is distinctively juicy and fresh. Winemaker César Perrin recommends enjoying this wine until 2026 and then again after 2036. I’m slightly less enthusiastic with regards to the drinking window, but this is a delicious and age-worthy white.
- By Nicolas Greinacher on April 2023
I eagerly anticipated meeting with winemaker César Perrin to learn about the massive construction project to rebuild the winery. From hundreds of applications, the Perrin Family awarded Indian architect Bijoy Jain with the task. The fundamental concept revolves around utilizing local soil in lieu of conventional cement, intending to facilitate the transfer of materials back to the local soils when the winery is eventually reconstructed 50 years from now. However, the true magic takes place beneath the surface, as sizable basins are filled with rainwater that is collected from the winery's roofs during the winter season. The mistral, a potent and typically arid wind that sweeps down from the north across the entire Rhône Valley, enters these subterranean basin halls, where it is cooled by the water, maintaining a natural temperature ranging from 12 to 14 degrees Celsius (equivalent to 53.6 to 57.2 degrees Fahrenheit). This cooled air is then redistributed throughout the winery to effectively regulate the temperature of the entire facility without the use of electricity. Instead of focusing on showy architectural designs with the sole intention of impressing, this approach reflects a visionary mindset embracing sustainability. Architecture aside, this year’s tasting covered a captivating set of vintages spanning from 2018 to 2022. Whether you choose their traditional white or red Châteauneuf-du-Pape or indulge in their special cuvées, you are in for a treat. Everything you could possibly look for in a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape—aromatic complexity, elegance, richness, balance, intensity, persistence—you will discover in Château de Beaucastel’s wines. While tasting the whites, Perrin and I debated how long they could develop in bottle. I was more conservative than him, suggesting that it is rare to see significant improvement after ten years of age. Perrin, on the other hand, reported memorable tastings of white Château de Beaucastel that had aged for several decades and suggested arranging a vertical tasting of the Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes at a later date to provide evidence for his stance.

Château de Beaucastel is set in a magical setting dotted with vineyards, ancient olive trees and truffle oaks. Here you will find nature in its purest form and its strength unwind. The typical rolled boulders are the secret of its vineyards in which gnarled vines grow in traditional 'gobelet' form. On this ancient soil we find the 13 grape varieties that are allowed in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. All these 13 grape varieties form the basis of the mythical blends of Château de Beaucastel, where they are grown biodynamically. This makes them one of the last to use the richness and complexity that this blend offers.
