Description
Château de Beaucastel is located in a magical setting dotted with vineyards, ancient olive trees and truffle oaks. Beaucastel is the most famous wine of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Here you will find nature in its purest form and its power comes to rest. The typical rolled pebbles are the secret of its vineyards in which gnarled vines grow in the traditional 'gobelet' shape. On this ancient soil we find the 13 grape varieties that are permitted in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. All these 13 grape varieties form the basis of the mythical blends of Château de Beaucastel, where they are grown biodynamically. In this way, they are one of the last to use the richness and complexity that this blend offers.
The history of Beaucastel starts at the beginning of the 17th century. The Perrins appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. We are now five generations further and there is a world company in the field of quality wines. From very affordable to the absolute top. Everything about vision, technique and vineyard cultivation that gave Beaucastel the coveted, global top position, applies to the vineyards and the wines with the other designations of origin, such as Ventoux, Luberon, Cotes du Rhone, Gigondas, Vinsobres, Rasteau and Vacqueyras. While retaining its own character; the mutual differences between the wines are great and prove the respectful working method
The Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a great wine. It is a blend of 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache and Syrah and the rest Counoise, all from very old vineyards. Only a very limited number of bottles of this top version of Beuacastel are made and this should not be missing in a top wine collection. In the review of the Wine-Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck writes that he could not bring himself to spit out this wine during the tasting!!
In the glass it has a deep black-ruby color. The wine has an incredible minerality along with black and blue fruit, forest floor and leather. Full-bodied, inky, concentrated with serious tannin so let it rest in the cellar for a while and this version certainly has a drinking window until 2050+ As they say at Chateau Beaucastel themselves this is "A wine to be kept for your retirement"

The 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a beast of a wine that’s shed most of the baby fat it showed from barrel. A normal blend of 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, and the rest Syrah and Counoise, this tiny production release has incredible minerality to go with searing black and blue fruits, forest floor, smoked earth and leather. Full-bodied, inky, concentrated and backwards with a serious kick of tannin, it will need a decade of cellaring to be approachable. I suspect it will have 2-3 decades of longevity.
While 2013 and 2014 are no doubt difficult vintages, this is still a brilliant lineup of wines from the Perrin Family. When speaking about 2014, Marc Perrin commented that there was a lot of mildew pressure and they had to work extremely hard in the vineyard. Yields were down 40% due to dropped fruit, and I think their commitment to quality shows in the wines. The estate excelled in 2013 as well, and both their classic Châteauneuf du Pape and the tiny production Hommage a Jacques Perrin are some of the wines of the vintage. Looking at precipitation between recent vintages, 2014 received 900 millimeters and 2013 slightly less at 700 millimeters (600-650 is average).

Extremely aromatic with blueberries, blackberries, and flowers. Full- bodied, dense, and rich yet agile and exciting. The tannins are seamless and beautiful. The finish shows stones and spices. The ancient mourvedre in the blend gives this wine elegance. Incredible depth. So drinkable now but goes on for minutes. Fantastic Hommage from a more challenging vintage.

From: Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reds: The Flamboyant 2014s and the Structured 2013s (Apr 2016)
Dark purple. Ripe cherry, dark berry liqueur and candied licorice on the deeply perfumed nose, lifted by a smoky mineral quality. Broad, sweet and seamless on the palate, offering deeply concentrated black and blue fruit, floral pastille and spicecake flavors and a subtle touch of dark chocolate. Shows superb energy and focus on the finish, which is given shape by slow-building tannins and sharpened by a jolt of juicy acidity. The interplay of power and finesse is quite impressive.

François Perrin told me that while he thinks the 2014s from the region will be highly appealing to many people for their often "massive fruit and extroverted personality," the 2013s, at their best, "will be the ones for people who like structure and have the patience" to age them. This venerable estate's wines always contain a high percentage of grapes other than Grenache, so a year with a short crop of that variety "doesn't really throw us or the blend of the wine off," he told me. "We like to work with Mourvèdre, especially, so years like '13 that favor late-ripening grapes are just fine with us," he added.

From: Châteauneuf du Pape: The Lively 2013s and Lush 2012s (Apr 2015)
Glass-staining purple. An explosively perfumed bouquet of fresh black and blue fruits, incense, candied licorice and violet, with a smoky mineral element adding vivacity. Sweet, penetrating and pure, offering intense, palate-staining blackcurrant and black raspberry flavors lifted and sharpened by juicy acidity. Gains flesh and weight with air while maintaining urgency and finishes sappy, smoky and very long, with fine-grained tannins building slowly.

Marc Perrin described the Beaucastel 2013s as "very northern [Rhône] in style" because of their emphasis on dark fruits and the higher-than-normal amount of "darker varieties" in the blends. That's true of the vast majority of Châteauneufs from the vintage, he told me, adding that "the wines are going to have interesting aging curves" because the varietal makeup of wines across the appellation "is unlike what anybody is used to. with so little Grenache in the final blends." Speaking to the 2012s, Perrin told me that it's a vintage quite a bit like 2010 "except that the tannins are rounder, which will make the wines both accessible and ageworthy." He mused that it's almost impossible to find a vintage in recent times that's not at least acceptable, "2002 being the big exception," a fact he attributes to warmer weather and to vastly improved farming practices, not to mention greater selection in the vineyards, at the sorting tables and in the cellar. "Think about it," he asked me rhetorically, "how many bad, much less really bad wines do you find in Châteauneuf now? What is average today would have been considered great just 20 years ago."
