Description
the Algueira domain and the renaissance of Ribeira Sacra
Bodega Algueira is one of the pioneers in Ribeira Sacra and has played a key role in the revival of this historic wine region. Fabio Algueira and his father, Fernando, have spent the past decades reclaiming extremely steep terraces abandoned after the Spanish Civil War. These vineyards, situated on the banks of the Sil River, now form the basis for some of Galicia's most expressive wines. Using blends of indigenous grape varieties, Algueira brings the complexity and authenticity of the region to life.
grapes and terroir
The 2021 Dolio is composed of 45% mencía, 25% sousón, 15% brancellao, 7.5% merenzao, and 7.5% caíño. These grapes come from the Carballocobo and Abeleda vineyards, which together comprise 3.7 hectares. The soils consist of slate, schist, granite, quartz, and gneiss. The plots are located at an altitude of 200 to 600 meters, on terraces with south, southeast, and east exposures. These conditions create a pronounced mineral signature and an exciting balance of ripe fruit and fresh acidity.
the 2021 harvest
The 2021 vintage was challenging, with a warm June followed by cooler weather, but the dry harvest yielded healthy grapes with excellent acid balance. The alcohol content, at 13%, is a full percentage point lower than in 2022, giving the wine an added touch of elegance and freshness. According to The Wine Advocate, this is a wine that develops beautifully in the glass and is made for longevity.
vinification and maturation
The harvest was carried out entirely by hand in September 2021. The grapes were fermented whole bunches, traditionally by foot in open French oak vats, with cold maceration. Fermentation took place with 100% indigenous yeasts in 500-liter barriques, partially with stems. The wine then aged for 23 months in 225-liter barriques and large 2,000-liter foudres. This approach gives the Dolio 2021 complexity, structure, and layering, without allowing the oak to overpower its freshness and precision. A total of only 6,665 bottles were produced, bottled in April 2025.
color, smell and taste
The 2021 Dolio presents itself with a deep ruby red color. The nose reveals aromas of red fruit, floral notes, spices, and subtle earthy accents. On the palate, the wine is both refined and intense, with vibrant acidity, chalky tannins, and a long, energetic finish. Its balance and precision make it both accessible and suitable for further aging. The expressive minerality reflects the steep terroirs of Doade and Abeleda.
reviews and storage potential
The 2021 Dolio was awarded 95 points by Luis Gutiérrez (The Wine Advocate). He emphasized the lower alcohol, freshness, and harmonious character of this vintage, as well as its potential for further development in the cellar. The wine opens slowly in the glass, indicating longevity. Its aging potential is between 2025 and 2033, making it an excellent choice for both immediate consumption and those willing to wait a few years.

The 2021 Dolio is the third vintage of a cuvée of 45% Mencía, 25% Sousón, 15% Brancellao, 7.5% Merenzao and 7.5% Caíño selected from two of their vineyards, Carballocobo and Cortezada, with each grape providing something and the blend of all is better than each separately. The full clusters were foot trodden and fermented in a tronconic oak vat, and part of the destemmed grapes was added and fermented together with indigenous yeasts and matured in 225-liter barrels and 2,000-liter foudres for 23 months. It has lower alcohol than previous years; in 2021, it's only 13% (a full 1% less than 2022), keeping a pH of 3.4 and 5.7 grams of acidity. I kept it in the glass for a long time, and the wine opened up beautifully. Their aim is to produce a long-lived wine. 6,665 bottles were filled in April 2025.
Algueira, one of the pioneers in Ribeira Sacra, has revamped its portfolio and wines. I met with Fabio, second generation of the family in the project, and his father, Fernando, to get a better understanding of what they are doing. Basically, they are moving from varietal wines to blends of varieties from the same place. The process is gradual, and in the coming years, more of these new cuvées will be released. They work 21 hectares of vines from which they produce some 110,000 bottles, from some 110,000 kilos of their own grapes and some 50,000 kilos of purchased grapes. They produce young wines, a category they are reducing, but there is high demand in Galicia.
They've been looking for cooler places to plant their new vines with varieties like Brancellao, Merenzao, Sousón and Caíño, and those are helping with the warmer vintages. 2024 was a very good year, for them better than 2021, with enough and regular rain and a very good climate that allowed them to pick each variety the optimum moment, a year like in 2016 or 2015. The whites have a good punch. As for 2023, it was warm but less warm than 2022, and the key now is the rain; rain in August accelerates the harvest, and it was a good year, better than in 2022. 2022 was, of course, a very warm and dry year, with rushed ripeness and dehydration of the grapes, like 2017 and 2019; but this time, I didn't taste any wines from 2022. All the reds I tasted were from 2021, a year that was not easy due to a difficult, very warm June and then lower temperatures, the opposite of what you expect, but with a dry harvest that provided healthy grapes. The 2021 wines might have more longevity; they started closed and needed time, but it's good they are releasing them now.

This shows a wonderfully complex nose of dried herbs and wild berries. The medium- to full-bodied palate is elegant and bright, with focused, precise tannins and incisive energy. There’s a sense of overall balance, with ethereal, nervy fruit that gives the wine both lift and depth. A blend of 45% mencia from Carballocobo, 25% souson, 15% brancellao, 7% merenzao, and a touch of caino. Drink or hold.

Wijnhuis
Interessante feitjes over F. Algueira
