Description
In the glass, the Vina Mein Tinto wine is bright red. It's a red wine with a clear Atlantic influence, offering elegance, power, freshness, minerality, and a touch of saltiness. Balsamic notes on the nose evoke eucalyptus and spices, bay leaf, with lovely violet and red berry notes. Quite direct on the palate, taut, vertical, and with a beautifully vibrant finish. A beautifully elegant red wine that you should definitely decant in its early years. Since 2018, Viña Mein has been owned by the Pago de Carraovejas group, which also includes Emilio Rojo, the renowned Verdejo wines of Ossian .
The 2021 Meín Tinto is the next step in the development of O Pequeno. Viña Meín - Emilio Rojo applies meticulous viticulture to various plots with diverse exposures and soil compositions. Harvesting is selective, selecting only grapes from vines at optimal ripeness. This wine is made from a blend of Caíño Longo, Garnacha Tintorera, Brancellao, Sousón, Ferrón, and Caíño Tinto, sourced from small vineyards around Leiro and Pazos de Arenteiro, in the narrowest and northernmost part of the Avia Valley.
The high rainfall and thermal fluctuations of the interior give these grapes a unique ripening process. The freshness of the Atlantic influence and the historic Ribeiro grape varieties form the foundation of this wine, combined with the intense summers of the Avia Valley. This reflects both the careful management of each vineyard and the impact of a changing climate.
The 2021 winter season was extremely rainy, with heavy rainfall between late January and early March. Bud formation began in late March, accompanied by persistent rainfall, requiring extra attention to the management of each vineyard. Only in late July did the sun and warmth arrive, ensuring good grape ripening.
The growing season seemed to be going smoothly, but several rainy days in September presented challenges during the harvest. To ensure quality, the grapes were selected bunch by bunch, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The red grape harvest took place between September 23 and 30, 2021.
Meín Tinto embodies the intensity, freshness, and elegance of the historic red grape varieties of the Avia Valley. This is the third vintage of the joint Viña Meín-Emilio Rojo project, which employs an organic viticultural philosophy and in-depth knowledge of the various plots. The wine comes from small plots of Caíño Longo, Brancellao, Sousón, Ferrón, and Caíño Tinto, reflecting the winemaking heritage of the northern part of the valley. Meín Tinto is produced in Leiro, with vineyards in Ibedo, Toro, and Valgarreiros, and further north in Pazos de Arenteiro, where plots such as Zacoy and Rivas are located.
Despite the varying slopes and exposure, the diverse soil compositions of the Sábrego soil and the character of the grapes ensure a unique ripening experience. The combination of the Atlantic freshness and the warm inland summers gives this wine a special terroir expression. The distribution of the vineyards around Leiro allows the vinification process to be adapted to the evolution of the grapes, both in the field and in the cellar.
- Manual harvesting in small crates of maximum 12 kg, with careful selection each day to harvest only perfectly ripe plots.
- Vinification by plot, using micro-fermentations to preserve the nuances of each site.
- Maturation takes place in stainless steel tanks of various sizes and a 600-liter wooden barrel, for approximately 10 months.

The red 2020 O Gran Mein Tinto was produced with a blend of 61% Caíño Longo, from slate and clay soils that provide structure and length while keeping the freshness, and 39% Brancellao, from sandy soils that deliver very delicate and pale wines. The don't have certifications yet (they are looking into that, but it's not easy because of the many neighbors working with chemicals...), but the vines are worked organically and some biodynamic treatments are applied. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in neutral oak barrels and stainless steel for 10 months. It feels a little closed and shy, serious and harmonious. The palate is balanced, subtly tannic and with a touch of earthiness. It opens up with time in the glass to beautiful aromas of wild herbs, berries and flowers. 1,810 bottles, 200 magnums and five three-liter bottles were produced.
Viña Mein has added one hectare of red grapes in Pazo de Arenteiro from 2020, a place of reputation for red wines. They work with the grapes from 24 hectares of vines and produce 50,000 bottles yearly, which is less than in the past because yields have been lowered after the transformation to organic farming in all their properties. 2020 was a warm and dry year of healthy grapes, but 2021 was a lot more challenging due to fungus attacks, which meant they produced their shortest vintage to date, no more than 43,000 bottles. The 2021 wines have a fresh and clearly cool Atlantic character. 2022 was super dry and healthy with a more Mediterranean character.
In July 2019, Pago de Carraovejas from Ribera del Duero purchased Viña Mein, so 2018 is a transition year—the wines were fermented by the previous team, but the new team finished them and blended them. They bottled just one red and one white, which is more or less the direction they want to follow, to make a grand vin from one of the historic properties of the zone. The winemaker now is Laura Montero, and her husband Dominique Roujou de Boubée is a consultant.

Viña Meín is one of those wineries that instantly sparks curiosity. Small in scale, but big in story. Tucked away in the green hills of Galicia, wine has been made here for centuries — and you can taste that history in every bottle.
Viña Meín history & location
The estate is located in Leiro, in the heart of Ribeiro, one of Spain’s oldest wine regions. As early as the 12th century, monks from the San Clodio monastery were cultivating vines in this valley. Centuries later, in 1988, Javier Alén breathed new life into the property by replanting the historic vineyards. Today, Viña Meín has grown into a benchmark in Ribeiro, with a strong focus on local grape varieties and authentic wines.
Grape varieties in Ribeiro
The strength of Viña Meín lies in the diversity of its grapes. Treixadura is the leading variety, loved for its fresh and aromatic character. Alongside it are Albariño, Godello, Torrontés, Loureira, Lado, and Albilla. For the reds, they work with native grapes such as Caíño Longo, Sousón, Brancellao, Ferrón, and Caíño Tinto. Together, they create a wide palette of flavors that is unique to Ribeiro.
Terroir and vineyards
The vineyards are spread across small plots in the Avia Valley. The landscape is rugged and hilly, with terraces and steep slopes. The soil is mainly granite and sand, locally known as “sábrego.” The climate plays a crucial role: warm days and cool nights, with temperature differences that can reach up to twenty degrees. This slows down ripening and gives the wines tension and aromatic depth. Each vineyard has its own personality, which shines through in the diversity of the wines.
How the wines are made
At Viña Meín, it’s all about respecting the grape. Harvesting is done by hand, in small crates. Most of the white wines ferment in stainless steel to preserve freshness, while the best plots are aged in large oak barrels and spend months on the lees. This adds depth and complexity, without letting oak dominate. The red wines are traditionally fermented and aged, with a focus on finesse rather than sheer power.
Specialties & facts
What makes Viña Meín stand out is how it blends old traditions with modern techniques. In 2019, the winery joined forces with Pago de Carraovejas, a renowned producer from Ribera del Duero. Since then, there has been more attention to sustainability and precision in the vineyards. Winemaker Laura Montero leads the cellar, with support from French oenologist Dominique Roujou de Boubée. Together, they are putting Ribeiro’s native grapes more firmly on the map.
