His approach is artisanal and understated. He works with minimal intervention, natural fermentation, and a refined use of wood. The Premier Cru La Maltroie is located right on the edge of the village of Chassagne-Montrachet, on a gently sloping clay-limestone soil with excellent drainage. The southeast-facing vineyard boasts a perfect balance of sunlight and coolness, producing wines with ripe fruit and vibrant freshness. The vines are old and deeply rooted, imparting character and minerality to the wine.

La Maltroie is often considered one of Chassagne's most expressive terroirs. The wines are rich yet refined, with a beautiful balance of fruit, spice, and chalky tension.

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Maltroie showcases the precision and tranquility that characterize Alex Moreau's style. The 2021 vintage produced wines with a fresh structure, pure aromas, and impressive tension. Despite the small yield due to spring frost, Moreau managed to create wines with remarkable depth and balance.

harvest and vinification

The grapes were harvested by hand and gently pressed. Fermentation took place with natural yeasts in French oak barrels, approximately a quarter of which were new. Maturation took place on the fine lees for twelve months, without bâtonnage, to preserve energy and freshness. After maturation, the wine was transferred to vats for further refinement until bottling without filtration.

The vinification is focused on finesse: controlled oxidation, minimal clarification and a subtle touch of wood ensure a wine in which terroir, tension and texture take centre stage.

color, smell and taste

The color is light golden yellow with a subtle green sheen. The nose reveals aromas of ripe pear, white flowers, mint, and orange peel, complemented by a hint of honey. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with a soft, ripe core of fruit and an open character. The wine has a wonderful balance between juiciness and precision, with a refined spiciness that emerges on the finish.

The finish is long, clean, and elegant, with nuances of nuts and spices. The structure is harmonious, the acidity lively, and the texture silky. This is a wine that already offers great pleasure and will continue to develop beautifully over the next ten years.

store and serve

Serve this Premier Cru at around 12°C. Young, it displays its freshness and expressive fruit, but with five to ten years of aging, the wine truly blossoms, with additional layers of almond, brioche, and subtle spice. Ageing potential: until 2032.
