Overview and Background
Rémi Jobard is a renowned winemaker in Burgundy, known for his excellent white wines. He is part of a family with a long tradition in winemaking in Meursault. Rémi Jobard is known for his organic viticulture practices and his focus on producing wines that reflect the terroir and vintage.
Vineyard and Terroir
- Vineyard : Le Poruzot-Dessus is a Premier Cru vineyard in Meursault, one of the most prestigious appellations in Burgundy for white wine.
- Terroir : The vineyard is located on the eastern slopes of Meursault and has a soil of clay and limestone. This soil, combined with the optimal exposure to the sun, produces wines with depth, complexity and excellent minerality.
Winemaking
- Grape variety : 100% Chardonnay, the noble grape of Burgundy known for its ability to express the terroir.
- Winemaking : Rémi Jobard uses traditional methods combined with modern techniques. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, some of which are new, to add complexity and structure to the wine.
- Maturation : The wine is aged on its lees (sur lie) in oak barrels for 12 to 18 months, which contributes to the creaminess and depth of the flavour.
Tasting notes
- Colour : Bright golden yellow.
- Aromas : The nose offers a complex mix of citrus fruits, ripe apples, pears, white flowers and subtle notes of toasted bread and vanilla from the oak aging.
- Taste : On the palate the wine is rich and full, with flavours of ripe white fruit, lemon and a hint of honey, supported by lively acidity and a mineral core.
- Finish : The finish is long and refined, with lingering notes of minerality and a hint of buttery complexity.

The 2018 Meursault 1er Cru Poruzots Dessus opens in the glass with aromas of pear, fresh peach, orange rind and honey. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and textural, with lively acids and chalky structuring dry extract, marking a step up in concentration and amplitude after the lieux-dits that preceded it.
As I wrote last year, Rémi Jobard is a softly spoken perfectionist who produces beautifully pure and vibrant expressions of Meursault that merit considerable interest. As readers may know, Jobard took over from his father Charles in 1996, and where Charles produced ripe, rich wines, Rémi has evolved in a decidedly different direction: today, the wines see two winters on the lees, and élevage is largely in Stockinger foudres. The result is a precise, almost minimalist style that produces Meursault of unusual transparency: classy wines that evolve slowly in bottle. 2017, which I revisited from bottle, is an excellent vintage at this address, simultaneously tensile but giving in profile, and they come warmly recommended. Jobard's 2018s are a little suppler and rounder, and they will drink well sooner than his serious 2017s.

Aromas of pear, white flowers, crisp yellow orchard fruit and oatmeal introduce Jobard's 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Poruzots Dessus, a medium to full-bodied, satiny, layered wine that displays greater mid-palate volume and texture than the lieux-dits bottlings that preceded it—though this is still a decidedly tensile, precise wine, in keeping with Jobard's style.

A softly spoken-perfectionist, Rémi Jobard produces beautifully pure and vibrant expressions of Meursault that merit considerable interest; so I was a little perplexed when he informed me, during my December visit, that I was as yet the only critic to taste his 2017 collection. As readers may know, Jobard took over from his father Charles in 1996. No fertilizers have been used since 1994, and the domaine was certified organic in 2008. All its vines are cordon pruned, promoting smaller yields and smaller berries. And since taking the helm, Jobard's style has evolved step by step: today, the wines see two winters on the lees, and élevage is largely in Stockinger foudres. From: La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy Additions (Jan 2021)
The 2019 Meursault Poruzots Dessus 1er Cru displays attractive tropical notes of passion fruit and guava on the nose, maybe obscuring some Meursault typicité but you won’t complain too loudly. The palate is well balanced with that tropical theme continuing, very smooth in texture with nectarine, Clementine, peach and apricot towards the seductive finish. Fine, but more early drinking fare.

Remi Jobard is the dynamic son of Charles Jobard, who has dedicated years to the construction of this small winery of 9 hectares, but with large plots in Meursault. Remi immediately showed his talent with modernly made wines that are mainly pure and mineral, original and not over-concentrated. The domaine has already abolished the use of herbicides and chemicals since 1988 and the wines are fully certified organic, so that the terroirs with their beautiful limestone hills can be seen to their fullest.
The harvest is carried out by the same team every year, the pickers are experienced and carry out an initial sorting directly in the vineyard. In addition to organic viticulture, as little intervention as possible is made in the vinification, the aging in Stockinger demi-muids, 650 liters of Austrian oak barrels, brings very little wood aromas, but a beautiful structure. These Burgundies often receive high reviews from the press and are a fine reference of the Meursault appellation, with chiseled and pure wines. The premier crus Poruzot and Genevrières, together with the Charmes and Perrières, are among the most perfect terroirs that Meursault has to offer.
