Description
Comtes Lafon is a highly regarded wine producer known for producing exceptional wines in Burgundy (France). Dominique Lafon, the owner and winemaker, is a respected figure in the world of wine. Comtes Lafon has a rich history that goes back several generations. The estate was founded in the early 19th century and Dominique Lafon has continued the family's winemaking tradition with great success. The winery is located in the village of Meursault, situated in the CĂŽte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy.
This Volnay also reaches a lonely height, just like the Santenots of Comtes Lafon. The different soil structure gives the grapes in the Clos des ChĂȘnes more thickness and a bit more fat. The elegance and the refined wood tones are comparable to those of the Santenots. The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des ChĂȘnes bursts from the glass with aromas of wild berries, rose petals, orange peel and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with juicy acidity and rich, powdery tannins.
FACT : The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you come to pick up the wine you will often also receive a nice discount. You will see the possible discount immediately if you choose Pick up on the Checkout page. We are located almost next to the Rijksweg with plenty of parking. Click here for address.

The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des ChĂȘnes wafts from the glass with aromas of wild berries, rose petals, orange rind and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with succulent acids and rich, powdery tannins, this is also a notable success.
Dominique Lafon celebrated his official retirement in December 2021, after 37 years at the domaine, and is handing over the reins to daughter Léa and nephew Pierre, even if he will surely still be on hand to help the new generation for many years to come. He can reflect with satisfaction on an important career, as the first generation of the Lafon family to become a farmer and grow the grapes he vinified and as one of his generation's leading pioneers of organic farming. And he can certainly be satisfied with the 2020 vintage, a terrific success at this address. As the accompanying notes attest, I was very impressed, and special mention is owing to the best set of red wines I can remember tasting here.

From: Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)
The 2020 Volnay Clos des ChĂȘnes 1er Cru was a small yield this year as it is an old vineyard on top of the hill, so just three and a half barrels were produced. The nose is lively and vivacious with black cherries, violet and crushed stone aromas - all well defined. The palate is svelte and harmonious, - silky smooth and fine tannins, impressive mineralitĂ© with a poised and persistent, almost Lafarge-like finish. Superb. Bottled under Diam 30. Closure: Diam 30
- By Neal Martin on October 2019
Dominique Lafon was in typically irrepressible form when I dropped in at his winery in Meursault. His son, Pierre, took me through the reds first. âThe reds are racked but not sulfured,â he told me. âThey are very elegant in style with between 13.5° and 13.8° alcohol, and they will be bottled in late spring, as I think they can take a slightly longer aging.â We then moved into the adjacent cellar, where I tasted his 2020 MĂącon wines, which I have moved to my small MĂąconnais report, before broaching his Meursaults. I asked Lafon how he compared the 2019 and 2020 vintages. âThe 2019s are slightly rounder and more appealing,â he told me. âThe tartaric backbone of the 2020s gives them great energy. The 2019s remind me of old-time ripe vintages, maybe like the 1992.â [At this juncture, I asked to what vintage he would compare 2020, but he was stumped for an answer!] Lafon continued, âI think the 2020s are fresher than the 2018s. You feel more heat on the 2018s. Picking started on August 20 with the BouchĂšres and PerriĂšres, and then we picked the reds, which were harvested very quickly.â Readers should also note that the 2020 Montrachet is the first vintage not completely vinified in new oak; around one-third was new this year, and there will be no new oak in 2021. The 2020s are excellent in quality, quite expressive and intense, full of Meursault DNA. Whereas I normally put the Meursault-PerriĂšres on top, I feel that the earlier growing season did not benefit this Premier Cru as much, and instead the Meursault-Charmes is my pick of the bunch, with GenevriĂšres hot on its tail and BouchĂšres the âhidden gem,â not that those exist given the status of Comtes-Lafon. Since 2014, all Lafonâs wines have been bottled under Diam 30 closures.

Comtes Lafon is a highly regarded wine producer known for producing exceptional wines in Burgundy (France). Dominique Lafon, the owner and winemaker, is a respected figure in the world of wine.
History of Comtes Lafon
Domaine des Comtes Lafon was originally founded by Jules Joseph BarthĂ©lĂ©my Lafon, born in 1864. He married Marie Boch in January 1894, whose family were already wine merchants and estate owners in Meursault. He expanded the estate and purchased several important plots at the beginning of the 20th century, such as: Le Montrachet Grand Cru, the Meursault 1er Crus âLes PerriĂšresâ, âLes Charmesâ and âLes GenevriĂšresâ, Volnay 1er Crus âSantenotsâ and âClos des ChĂȘnesâ. In 1961, the entire production of Domaine des Comtes Lafon was bottled on the estate and he permanently moved from Paris to Meursault. Dominique Lafon, RenĂ©'s son, took over the domain in 1984 and gradually ended the sharecropping agreements, so that from 1987 the entire 13.80 hectares are managed exclusively by the Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Lafon is known for its high-quality Chardonnays with an oily and mineral character. The estate owns and produces from several vineyards in Meursault, as well as from other appellations in Burgundy, such as Volnay and MonthĂ©lie.
Production by Comtes Lafon
Dominique Lafon is an advocate of biodynamic farming practices, where sustainability and the health of the vineyard ecosystem are paramount. He uses organic and biodynamic methods in the vineyards to produce wines that reflect the terroir of the region. Comtes Lafon has achieved cult status among wine lovers and collectors. They are often highly sought after for their purity, balance and expression of the unique characteristics of the terroir. The winery produces a wide range of wines, including several Meursault Premier Cru and Village. Some of the most famous vineyards under the Comtes Lafon label are Meursault PerriĂšres, Meursault Charmes and Volnay Santenots. These wines are celebrated for their elegance and complexity. Comtes Lafon wines are produced in relatively limited quantities, making them somewhat difficult to find.
