Description
Winery Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is among the absolute world leaders and is known for its uncompromising approach in both vineyard and cellar. In addition to the iconic red wines from Vosne-Romanée, the estate also owns a small share in Montrachet, where Chardonnay is forged into one of the most concentrated and long-lived white wines in the world. In recent years, the estate has focused strongly on adding precision, tension, and integration to its white wines, without sacrificing depth and power.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
Montrachet Grand Cru lies on the border of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet and is considered the absolute benchmark for Chardonnay worldwide. Lime-rich soils provide structure and tension, while the exposure and microclimate foster ripeness and aromatic richness. The 2020 vintage was characterized by ripe grapes with deep aromas, combined with sufficient freshness to keep the wine balanced and long-lasting.
Within the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti range, Montrachet Grand Cru represents the pinnacle of white wines. This style combines the natural richness of the vineyard with a more restrained, precise approach in the cellar, allowing this wine to develop slowly and layered over decades.
Vineyards and grape varieties
100% Chardonnay from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's small share of the Montrachet Grand Cru. Yields are very low and production is extremely limited, contributing to the concentration, intensity, and extreme scarcity of this wine.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected. Vinification focuses on maximum purity and precision, while preserving Montrachet's natural richness. Maturation takes place in oak barrels, where the use of wood is supportive and fully integrated into the wine's structure. In recent years, increased attention has been paid to tension and balance, resulting in wines with greater definition and a refined texture.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, lustrous golden yellow color. The aroma is intense and layered, with honeyed orchard fruit, peach confit, and green mango, complemented by nutmeg, freshly baked bread, and buttery puff pastry. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate emphasizes the combination of breadth and precision, with the wine remaining remarkably energetic and vibrant despite its power.
The palate is full and broad-shouldered, with a silky texture and enormous concentration. At the same time, the wine remains taut and dynamic, carried by a distinct chalky structure that slowly unfolds. The finish is exceptionally long and resonant, with fruit, spice, and minerality recurring in layers.
Development and drinking window
According to William Kelley of The Wine Advocate, who rates the wine 100 points, the drinking window is between 2027 and 2055. The structure, richness of extract, and balance make it clear that this Montrachet will continue to develop and deepen over several decades.
Summary of professional reviews
William Kelley of The Wine Advocate awarded 100 points and called the 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru brilliant, with a rare combination of richness, precision, and energy. He emphasized the wine's breadth and intensity, coupled with a chalky structure and exceptionally long finish, making this vintage an absolute benchmark within Montrachet.

The 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru is brilliant, uniting all the breadth and plenitude of which this vineyard is capable with all the work that's been quietly going on at the domaine to bring greater precision and integration to the white wines. Exhibiting extravagant aromas of honeyed orchard fruits, confit peach and green mango mingled with hints of nutmeg, freshly baked bread and buttery pastry, it's full-bodied, satiny and broad shouldered, remaining vibrant and dynamic despite all its heft and weight, and revealing its chassis of chalky structuring extract as it opens in the glass. It concludes with a long, resonant finish.
Aubert de Villaine had been barely able to contain his enthusiasm for the 2020 vintage when I saw him last year, and looking at the 2020s from bottle with Perrine Fenal at the domaine this year only confirmed why. This is a striking vintage for the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which is both very stylistically distinctive—and in that sense, even a little atypical—but which also shows the estate's different terroirs very clearly. The 2020s aren't as sensual and red-fruited as the 2019s; they're deeper-pitched and spicier in profile and will demand more patience, even if both vintages are likely to prove similarly long-lived. The domaine's white wines are also especially successful this year. I've also included tasting notes on the nascent 2021s from barrel, but it's the in-bottle notes, tasted at the domaine in ideal conditions, that are as ever the most important commentaries on each vintage.

From: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2020 & The New Burgundy (Mar 2023)
The 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru is elegant, airy and so expressive. It reminds me of vintages such as 2001 and 2004, Montrachets that favored precision and freshness over volume or exotic richness. Hints of lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and tangerine oil all grace this exquisite, mid-weight Montrachet from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. I went back to the 2020 numerous times during this tasting and witnessed it open beautifully with aeration and time in the glass.

This year’s presentation of the new releases from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti marked the beginning of a new chapter. It was the first time new Co-Managers Perrine Fenal and Bertrand de Villaine presented the wines following the retirement of Aubert de Villaine.
As I sat down to taste the wines, I thought it was probably a very good time for a transition because that is what Burgundy is all about right now. Transition. The first thing evident in the 2020 reds is their intense red/purplish color. I guess this is present-day Burgundy. These are not your parents’ wines; that much is clear. We are in another era, figuratively and literally.
Two thousand-twenty is the third in a cycle of historically warm and dry years spanning vintages 2018 through 2020. And yet it is also the most surprising of the three years. As much as the wines are dark, deep and richly flavored, they are also remarkably fresh and vibrant. Are the vines adapting to current conditions, or are vineyard managers and winemakers becoming more skilled at dealing with the New Burgundy, or are other factors at play? I suspect the answer to that question, if there indeed is an answer, is pretty complex.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (abbreviated DRC) is one of the most legendary wine estates in the world and is considered the pinnacle of Burgundian winemaking. The estate has a rich history that goes back hundreds of years and a deep connection with the traditions and terroirs of Burgundy.
Historical background of Romanée-Conti:
Early origins: The vineyards of Romanée-Conti have been cultivated since the Middle Ages. They were originally owned by monastic orders, who at that time managed many vineyards in Burgundy.
18th century: The Romanée vineyard (now Romanée-Conti) came into the hands of the Prince of Conti, Louis François de Bourbon, a nephew of Louis XV, in 1760. He added his name to the vineyard, which then became "La Romanée-Conti." The prince used the wine exclusively for his own court and guests, which contributed to its exclusive reputation.
French Revolution: During the French Revolution, the properties of the nobility, including Romanée-Conti, were confiscated. It was sold as national property.
Modern history: In 1869 the estate was purchased by the de Villaine family. Together with the Leroy family, they remain owners of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to this day.
Domaine Romanée-Conti and its vineyards and terroirs:
Locations: DRC manages some of the most prestigious grand cru vineyards in Burgundy, including: Romanée-Conti (monopole)
- La Tâche (monopole)
- Richebourg
- Romanée-Saint-Vivant

Terroir:
The vineyards are located in Vosne-Romanée and feature a unique combination of limestone-rich soils, a mild climate, and an ideal location, resulting in wines of exceptional finesse and complexity.
Philosophy and viticulture of DRC
Hand harvest: Every grape is picked by hand to ensure quality.
Biodynamic viticulture: Since the 1980s, DRC has introduced biodynamic methods to preserve the natural balance of the vineyards.
Vinification: DRC combines traditional Burgundian techniques with modern innovations. The wines are aged in new oak barrels and mature for a long time before being released.
Why are the wines of Domaine Romanée-Conti so exclusive?
- Limited production: The total annual production of DRC is extremely low, making the wines rare and highly sought after.
- Quality over quantity: Every detail in production, from vineyard to bottle, is executed with the greatest care.
- Influence: DRC is the benchmark against which other Burgundian and even international wines are measured. The name is synonymous with luxury and perfection.
- Desirability: DRC wines are sold at auctions for record prices and are a must-have for collectors.
- Cultural icon: Over the centuries, DRC has become a symbol of elegance and refinement in the world of wine.
