Description
Winery Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti ranks among the absolute top of the international wine world and is synonymous with exceptional terroir expression in the Côte de Nuits. The estate works exclusively with its own vineyards and applies an uncompromising approach in both vineyard and cellar. Low yields, meticulous selection, and a strong respect for natural balance form the foundation of its style. Each wine from the estate is the result of precision, experience, and a deep understanding of the place and vintage.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
Romanée-Conti is located in Vosne-Romanée, on one of the most renowned slopes of the Côte de Nuits. The vineyard covers less than two hectares and is situated on a gentle slope with an easterly exposure. The soils consist of limestone and clay, which contributes to tension, aromatic refinement, and a pronounced minerality. The 2019 growing season was characterized by ripeness and concentration, yet with sufficient freshness to maintain balance and elegance.
Vineyards and grape varieties
This wine comes from a single monopoly vineyard and is made exclusively from Pinot Noir. The 2019 yield was approximately 22.5 hectoliters per hectare. Production is extremely limited, at around 409 cases, making this wine one of the most scarce and sought-after Grand Crus in the world.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The harvest took place on September 17th. In the cellar, careful vinification is carried out, focused on preserving finesse and energy. Maturation takes place in oak barrels, using traditional coopers and other barrel makers. Bottling takes place slightly earlier than in the past to preserve the wine's precision and freshness.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a slightly deeper ruby red color than some previous vintages. The nose unfolds a complex palette of rose petals, violets, black tea, wild berries, exotic spices, bergamot, and a subtle touch of licorice. On the palate, the wine is full and enveloping, with a broad attack that flows into a remarkably weightless yet intensely concentrated core. The tannins are silky and fully integrated, and the acidity provides tension and length. The finish is exceptionally long, distinctly floral, and extremely refined, with a precision rarely matched.
Development and drinking window
Several drinking windows are mentioned for this vintage. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate (100 points) predicts a development period of approximately 2033 to 2070. Neal Martin describes the wine as exceptionally persistent and perfectly balanced, with potential extending to at least 2060. The wine is clearly built for very long aging and will continue to develop over decades.
Summary of professional reviews
William Kelley of The Wine Advocate awarded the 2019 Romanée-Conti 100 points, describing it as a monument in the making, with unparalleled energy, precision, and elegance. Neal Martin also spoke of perfection in the glass, emphasizing its balance, aromatic definition, and exceptional length. The 2019 vintage is widely considered one of the most impressive recent expressions of this iconic Grand Cru.

The 2019 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru is a wine that brought tears to my eyes. Unfurling in the glass with scents of rose petals, black tea, wild berries, exotic spices, violets, bergamot and licorice, it's full-bodied, sensual and enveloping, with a broad attack that segues into a weightless but pungently intense mid-palate defined by striking energy and precision. Seamless and elegant, with melting tannins and mouthwatering acids, it concludes with an expansive, intensely floral finish. It's a monument in the making.
This was a particularly memorable tasting at the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Revisiting the bottled 2019s was thrilling, as these are some of the most sensual, dramatic young wines I've ever tasted at this address; and the young 2020s, tasted from barrel (with the exception of several cuvées that had been recently racked), show immense potential too.
A few small evolutions have been made in the cellars in the last few years, with Tonnellerie La Grange increasingly in evidence alongside historically dominant François Frères on the red side of the ledger, and barrels from Séguin Morey, Damy and Taransaud to be found in the new room devoted to the domaine's white wines. Bottling is also a touch earlier than in the past.

From: Better Than Water: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2019 in Bottle (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru was picked on 17 of September at 22.5hL/ha. I left my glass for five minutes before the first sip since it does not like to give everything away at first pouring. Firstly, it is a little deeper in colour than other recent vintages. Waiting for the wine to open pays dividends, revealing exquisitely-defined brambly red fruit, incense and red roses. There is a very slight gamey element, not strong, but just lingers off-stage. The palate is medium-bodied with lace-like tannins that frame the otherworldly, pure, red fruit. It is perfectly balanced and bewitchingly pure, a crescendo of flavour that this year, at least at this early juncture, put the La Tâche in its place. So elegant on the finish and remarkably persistent, this is just perfection in a glass. 409 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s annual in bottle tasting in London.

Historical background of Romanée-Conti:
Early origins: The vineyards of Romanée-Conti have been cultivated since the Middle Ages. They were originally owned by monastic orders, who at that time managed many vineyards in Burgundy.

He added his name to the vineyard, which then became "La Romanée-Conti." The prince used the wine exclusively for his own court and guests, which contributed to its exclusive reputation.
French Revolution: During the French Revolution, the properties of the nobility, including Romanée-Conti, were confiscated. It was sold as national property.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (abbreviated DRC) is one of the most legendary wine estates in the world and is considered the pinnacle of Burgundian winemaking. The estate has a rich history that goes back hundreds of years and a deep connection with the traditions and terroirs of Burgundy.
Historical background of Romanée-Conti:
Early origins: The vineyards of Romanée-Conti have been cultivated since the Middle Ages. They were originally owned by monastic orders, who at that time managed many vineyards in Burgundy.
18th century: The Romanée vineyard (now Romanée-Conti) came into the hands of the Prince of Conti, Louis François de Bourbon, a nephew of Louis XV, in 1760.
Modern history: In 1869 the estate was purchased by the de Villaine family. Together with the Leroy family, they remain owners of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to this day.
Domaine Romanée-Conti and its vineyards and terroirs:

Philosophy and viticulture of DRC
Hand harvest: Every grape is picked by hand to ensure quality.
Biodynamic viticulture: Since the 1980s, DRC has introduced biodynamic methods to preserve the natural balance of the vineyards.
Vinification: DRC combines traditional Burgundian techniques with modern innovations. The wines are aged in new oak barrels and mature for a long time before being released.
Why are the wines of Domaine Romanée-Conti so exclusive?
- Limited production: The total annual production of DRC is extremely low, making the wines rare and highly sought after.
- Quality over quantity: Every detail in production, from vineyard to bottle, is executed with the greatest care.
- Influence: DRC is the benchmark against which other Burgundian and even international wines are measured. The name is synonymous with luxury and perfection.
- Desirability: DRC wines are sold at auctions for record prices and are a must-have for collectors.
- Cultural icon: Over the centuries, DRC has become a symbol of elegance and refinement in the world of wine.
