Description
Winery Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti ranks among the absolute world elite in Burgundy and works exclusively with its own vineyards in Vosne-Romanée and the surrounding area. The estate is known for its uncompromising approach, low yields, and a style focused on precision, balance, and extreme longevity. La Tâche is a monopoly of the estate and, along with Romanée-Conti, forms the very heart of the portfolio. This vineyard produces wines with power, structure, and a deep, layered complexity that only fully unfolds over time.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
La Tâche is located in Vosne-Romanée, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. The vineyard benefits from a classic Burgundian terroir with chalky soils that create tension and depth. The 2020 vintage is part of a series of warm, dry years, but stands out for its remarkable freshness and energy. While 2019 was more red-fruited and seductive, 2020 shows a darker, spicier profile with more structure and a need for bottle aging.
La Tâche Monopole is known within the estate as the most structured and powerful expression. Compared to Romanée-Conti, La Tâche is broader-shouldered and more muscular, with an aroma that is often more spicy and earthy. This wine almost always requires patience and develops over several decades.
Vineyards and grape varieties
100% Pinot Noir from the monopoly vineyard La Tâche in Vosne-Romanée. The grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously selected. The low yields and the use of whole bunches contribute to the wine's pronounced structure and spicy complexity.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The 2020 harvest took place under warm, dry conditions, with fully ripe grapes and retained natural freshness. Vinification follows the estate's classic style, with whole-bunch fermentation and long aging in oak barrels. The emphasis is on preserving tension and terroir expression. The 2020 vintage also marks a transition period for the estate, with Perrine Fenal and Bertrand de Villaine as new co-managers, while maintaining the distinctive DRC style.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a deep ruby red color with remarkable intensity. The nose immediately reveals many layers: mulberries, cherries, and cassis, followed by bergamot, black tea, licorice, exotic spices, and floral notes of peony. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate describes the wine as magical, with enormous aromatic breadth and complexity.
On the palate, La Tâche 2020 is full-bodied and powerful, with a broad attack and an impressive mid-palate. The structure is pronounced yet refined, with supple tannins and an elegant, muscular build. Antonio Galloni of Vinous emphasizes the wine's explosive intensity and strong, backward character, with notes of plum, hoisin, spices, and blood orange defining the flavor. Despite its power, the wine remains energetic and precise, with a very long, sustained finish.
Development and drinking window
Several drinking windows are mentioned for this vintage. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate (99 points) suggests a period of 2033 to 2070. Antonio Galloni of Vinous (98 points) advises even more patience and sees the optimal window from around 2035 to 2070. Both reviewers agree that this wine needs at least 15 to 20 years of bottle aging to fully develop.
Summary of professional reviews
William Kelley of The Wine Advocate awarded La Tâche 2020 99 points, praising its combination of power, complexity, and seamless structure. Antonio Galloni of Vinous awarded it 98 points, describing it as a massive, deeply concentrated wine, typical of La Tâche and built for longevity. These high scores underscore the exceptional quality of this vintage.

The 2020 La Tâche Grand Cru is magical, mingling notions of mulberries, cherries and cassis with scents of bergamot, black tea, licorice, exotic spices and peonies. Full-bodied, rich and resonant, with a broad attack, huge mid-palate amplitude and a supple, seamless, elegantly muscular profile, this is a remarkably powerful but also profoundly complex, intellectually and sensually thrilling young wine.
Aubert de Villaine had been barely able to contain his enthusiasm for the 2020 vintage when I saw him last year, and looking at the 2020s from bottle with Perrine Fenal at the domaine this year only confirmed why. This is a striking vintage for the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which is both very stylistically distinctive—and in that sense, even a little atypical—but which also shows the estate's different terroirs very clearly. The 2020s aren't as sensual and red-fruited as the 2019s; they're deeper-pitched and spicier in profile and will demand more patience, even if both vintages are likely to prove similarly long-lived. The domaine's white wines are also especially successful this year. I've also included tasting notes on the nascent 2021s from barrel, but it's the in-bottle notes, tasted at the domaine in ideal conditions, that are as ever the most important commentaries on each vintage.

From: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2020 & The New Burgundy (Mar 2023)
The 2020 La Tâche Grand Cru is very typically La Tâche. Plum, hoisin, spice and blood orange are all amplified in an explosive, massively backward La Tâche that will need 15-20 years in the cellar to start drinking well. As is so often the case, whole clusters lend an exotic spice quality that is front and center. The warm growing season has taken all the La Tâche signatures and amplified them, resulting in a dense, explosive Burgundy that will thrill readers lucky enough to own it for many decades to come.
- By Antonio Galloni on March 2023
This year’s presentation of the new releases from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti marked the beginning of a new chapter. It was the first time new Co-Managers Perrine Fenal and Bertrand de Villaine presented the wines following the retirement of Aubert de Villaine.
As I sat down to taste the wines, I thought it was probably a very good time for a transition because that is what Burgundy is all about right now. Transition. The first thing evident in the 2020 reds is their intense red/purplish color. I guess this is present-day Burgundy. These are not your parents’ wines; that much is clear. We are in another era, figuratively and literally.
Two thousand-twenty is the third in a cycle of historically warm and dry years spanning vintages 2018 through 2020. And yet it is also the most surprising of the three years. As much as the wines are dark, deep and richly flavored, they are also remarkably fresh and vibrant. Are the vines adapting to current conditions, or are vineyard managers and winemakers becoming more skilled at dealing with the New Burgundy, or are other factors at play? I suspect the answer to that question, if there indeed is an answer, is pretty complex.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (abbreviated DRC) is one of the most legendary wine estates in the world and is considered the pinnacle of Burgundian winemaking. The estate has a rich history that goes back hundreds of years and a deep connection with the traditions and terroirs of Burgundy.
Historical background of Romanée-Conti:
Early origins: The vineyards of Romanée-Conti have been cultivated since the Middle Ages. They were originally owned by monastic orders, who at that time managed many vineyards in Burgundy.
18th century: The Romanée vineyard (now Romanée-Conti) came into the hands of the Prince of Conti, Louis François de Bourbon, a nephew of Louis XV, in 1760. He added his name to the vineyard, which then became "La Romanée-Conti." The prince used the wine exclusively for his own court and guests, which contributed to its exclusive reputation.
French Revolution: During the French Revolution, the properties of the nobility, including Romanée-Conti, were confiscated. It was sold as national property.
Modern history: In 1869 the estate was purchased by the de Villaine family. Together with the Leroy family, they remain owners of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to this day.
Domaine Romanée-Conti and its vineyards and terroirs:
Locations: DRC manages some of the most prestigious grand cru vineyards in Burgundy, including: Romanée-Conti (monopole)
- La Tâche (monopole)
- Richebourg
- Romanée-Saint-Vivant
- Grands Échézeaux
- Échézeaux
- Corton (since 2009)
- Montrachet (for the white wine)
Terroir:
The vineyards are located in Vosne-Romanée and feature a unique combination of limestone-rich soils, a mild climate, and an ideal location, resulting in wines of exceptional finesse and complexity.
Philosophy and viticulture of DRC
Hand harvest: Every grape is picked by hand to ensure quality.
Biodynamic viticulture: Since the 1980s, DRC has introduced biodynamic methods to preserve the natural balance of the vineyards.
Vinification: DRC combines traditional Burgundian techniques with modern innovations. The wines are aged in new oak barrels and mature for a long time before being released.
Why are the wines of Domaine Romanée-Conti so exclusive?
- Limited production: The total annual production of DRC is extremely low, making the wines rare and highly sought after.
- Quality over quantity: Every detail in production, from vineyard to bottle, is executed with the greatest care.
- Influence: DRC is the benchmark against which other Burgundian and even international wines are measured. The name is synonymous with luxury and perfection.
- Desirability: DRC wines are sold at auctions for record prices and are a must-have for collectors.
- Cultural icon: Over the centuries, DRC has become a symbol of elegance and refinement in the world of wine.
