Description
The Weingut Emmerich Knoll has been among the absolute top of the Wachau and Austria for many years. The winery has been owned by the Knoll family since 1825 and has around 16 hectares of top vineyards in and around Unterloiben (including Schütt, Kreutles, Pfaffenberg, Loibnerberg and Kellerberg).
The grapes are picked by hand and undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks and large oak barrels. The wine matures on the fine lees (sur lie) to develop extra depth and complexity. The Ried Pfaffenberg Steiner Kremstal Riesling comes from predominantly orthogneiss soils. From the eastern part of the cru (paragneis and a little loess), the Ried Pfaffenberg Steiner Riesling Selection 2019 opens with a bright, deep and complex, darker and flinty bouquet of crushed stones, herbs and white and yellow stone fruits. Dense and juicy on the palate, this is a round, structured and mouth-filling Pfaffenberg based on a smart part of Botrytis, and has an intense and fine tannic finish. The wine is refined and salty-elegant, with dense, juicy fruit and fine tannins. A sustainable and powerful but tense wine that needs to mature for 5-6 years.

From the eastern part of the cru (paragneiss and a bit of loess), the 2019 Ried Pfaffenberg Steiner Riesling Selection opens with a clear, deep and complex, darker-toned and flinty bouquet of crushed stones, herbs and white and yellow stone fruits. Dense and juicy on the palate, this is a round, textured and mouth-filling Pfaffenberg based on a smart part of botrytis, and it has an intense and finely tannic finish. The wine is finessed and salty-elegant, with dense, juicy fruit and fine tannins. A sustainable and powerful but tensioned wine that has to be aged for 5–6 years. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.
Everything looked great until mid-August 2020, but then there was the hail on August 22, which only grazed Loiben but was devastating in Spitz. "Some of our grapes were only slightly damaged," reports Emmy Knoll. After that, it was dry at first, but due to warm and humid weather in September, there was a lot of rot pressure, which meant a costly and lossy harvest. "This was quite tragic, because the initial situation with us was actually super. We had aromatic grapes because the year was not as hot and dry as 2019 or even 2018, but the bigger the harvest team was and the more skilled, the better it was at sorting. In the end, we did have great material, and the wines turned out very nicely aromatic, just the way you want them to be."
So far, however, I have hardly tasted any 2020 wines from Knoll, as that was reserved for a later, then cancelled, trip. I hope to be able to pass the tops from 2020 soon, but for now it should anyway apply to still stock up with the great 2019s. The Vinotheksfüllung of the Loibner Grüner Veltliner is sensational, and so is the corresponding Riesling and also the 2019 Riesling Ried Schütt. In 20 years, I have never tasted a better collection than Knolls 2019s. Thus, it won't be easy for the 2020s...

Lovely peach and apricot nose with just a hint of tropical flowers. Ripe and well-structured, this rather generous dry riesling has serious minerality that carries the long, bone-dry finish. Drink or hold.

Knoll's main grape varieties that grow on the vineyards are Grüner Veltiner and Riesling, both accounting for about 45%. The remaining 10% is divided between the muskatelier, chardonnay, traminer and even pinot noir varieties. Of all the vines, a third are on the steep terraced vineyards where everything has to be done by hand because tractors cannot reach here. The vineyards are naturally cultivated and the wine is also made in the wine cellars in a very traditional way because fermentation and aging is done in casks or stainless steel tanks, certainly not on barriques. Weingut Knoll's wines are, as the label suggests, very traditional. In their youth, the wines are already delicious, but often still a bit closed (decanters are recommended in that case). It is advisable to let Knoll's wines mature for a while after buying them because then they show their true class. The wines are very pure and show an enormous concentration and mineral perseverance.
Knoll's wines are as baroque as the beautiful label that has adorned bottles since the 1960s. In their youth, the wines are already delicious, but often still a bit closed The wines are very pure and show an enormous concentration and mineral energy. Knoll's labels are recognizable by Saint Urbanis and have remained unchanged since the 60s, as has their top quality. This label comes from a painting made by a Wachau artist, which was bought by the Knoll family. To the left and right of Urban is a poem written in Gothic letters:
Tut mir nur den / Wein nicht taufen
Lasst ihn doch als / Heiden laufen
Nur der Durst / soll christlich sein
So erweist man / Ehr dem Wein
