Description
Coste di Rose, an esteemed Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva (MGA) in the Comune di Barolo, is a small but very captivating vineyard. It is the pronounced soil composition that gives the Barolo DOCG Coste di Rose its exceptional character. Expect notes of cherry and rose petals, hints of mint and sweet spices, accompanied by velvety tannins and a luscious, juicy mouthfeel.
The 2019 vintage was characterized by an early bud break, followed by a delayed flowering, causing a gradual maturation period. With all these factors combined, it created one of the longest and last harvested vintages of the decade and the 2019 vintage is therefore seen as a top vintage for authentic Barolos and Barberscos with an ideal growing season for the late-flowering Nebbiolo. With such a long aging period, the grapes were blessed with exceptional phenolic ripeness and a prominent backbone of acidity. This is reminiscent of vintage from 2013, which can also age so beautifully.

Aldo Vajra has always been a bit rebellious. Good thing, because this characteristic has led to this beautiful winery with its authentic wines. The vineyards of Vajra are located northwest of the town of Barolo and have been farmed organically from the start. The high location of the vineyards (the Bricco delle Viole is one of the highest vineyards in the Piedmont) causes high temperature differences between day and night. The grapes ripen slowly and completely, giving the wines a wonderful finesse and elegance. The relatively cool climate in this area has caused many winemakers to ditch the Dolcetto grape, as this grape needs heat to fully develop. But the Vajras still make beautiful rosé and red from this grape. Read more under the tab: Winery

With fruit from above the village of Barolo, the G.D. Vajra 2018 Barolo Coste di Rose shows a large aromatic scope and ample substance. This vineyard is characterized by very high density Diano sandstone (typical of the area), which explains the wine’s bigger sensorial impact. Its texture is velvety and smooth, and the wine offers lots of purple and red fruits with soft earth and perfumed flower. The vintage is open knit and broad in scope, perhaps lacking some of the brilliant focus you get in the cooler years. This wine was first produced in 2015.
G.D. Vajra earns top scores for its perfectly designed portfolio of Piedmont wines. Well balanced against various price points (and all very reasonable), the estate offers excellent high-end Barolos from single vineyards, the super accessible and charming Barolo Albe, and a whole range of lower-end wines that are all creative in terms of graphics and design and extremely innovative in terms of winemaking, blends and overall approach. The G.D. Vajra portfolio should be a model for all sorts of up-and-coming wineries. Just this past year, the winery team created a family library with more than 2,000 books on winemaking, geography and more. The oldest volume dates back to the 15th century.

From: 2019 Barolo: Back on Track (Jan 2023)
The 2019 Barolo Coste di Rose is the most open of the vineyard designates, but is not the easygoing Barolo it has often been in the past. Bright acids and veins of supporting tannin give the 2019 its taut, rather nervous feel. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, spice flowers and earthy tones all develop with a bit of time in the glass. There is a bit of nervousness in the tannin that needs to soften, but all the elements are nicely balanced.

The 2019 Barolos at Vajra are seriously impressive. These wines need a ton of air to show all they have to offer, something readers who want to taste them at this stage should bear in mind. The classicism of these wines is quite appealing for the future.
"It was a year with an early bud break but with late flowering and a late harvest; in other words, a year with a long growing season, one of the longest of the last decade." Giuseppe Vajra explained. "We had challenges with heavy rain in spring, but 2018 helped us understand we had to act quickly and decisively, so we did," he added. Harvest took place between October 7 and 23. "The wines extracted easily," Aldo Vajra opined. "We gave the 2019s 25-31 days on the skins, less than 2018 and 2017 and far less than years like 2010, with submerged cap maceration for all the top single-vineyard selections. Time in wood was about 28 months for the vineyard designates.”
