Description
The history of Macán and the collaboration between Rothschild and Vega Sicilia
The collaboration between Benjamin de Rothschild and Vega Sicilia is considered one of the most influential projects in contemporary Rioja. Both families have a long tradition of producing high-quality wines. Vega Sicilia is internationally recognized as a leading name from Ribera del Duero, with a strong reputation for long-term aging and refinement. The Rothschild family is known worldwide for its wines from Bordeaux, among other regions. Their shared ambition to create an elegant and modern Rioja led to the creation of Macán.
After intensive research into soils and microclimates, the families near San Vicente de la Sonsierra found the perfect base for their new project. This area is known for its chalky soils and centuries-old vineyards. The winery boasts modern facilities where meticulous vinification and traditional elements go hand in hand. The wines are carefully crafted and released only after they have had sufficient rest and development.
Rioja and the unique characteristics of the region
Macán primarily works with vineyards in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Both subregions are known for their cool Atlantic influence and wide variations in altitude. The combination of warm days and cool nights results in a long growing season. This gives Tempranillo aromatic concentration while maintaining sufficient freshness.
The soils consist of calcareous clay and ancient sedimentary layers. This structure ensures good water management and contributes to the tension in the wines. Rioja is traditionally a region where Tempranillo plays a leading role, but modern winemakers are increasingly adding small percentages of other grapes. At Macán, this has led to a subtle shift in style and complexity.
The winery and style of Macán
Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia produce two wines: Macán and Macán Clásico. The style is refined and focused on precision. In recent years, several changes have been implemented that have further sharpened the wines. For example, larger foudres are used during fermentation and aging. This choice creates more tension and layering in the final result. Since 2020, small amounts of Graciano and Garnacha have also been added. This adds extra energy and aromatic depth.
Macán 2020, a year in which freshness and structure come together
The 2020 Macán is known for its elegant texture and deep layering. This vintage benefited from even ripening and healthy grapes. The best plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra are selected for this wine. It's noteworthy that the grapes are cooled after harvest before fermentation begins. This results in a clear and precise expression.
What's striking is that this vintage contains not only Tempranillo but also small amounts of Graciano and Garnacha. This creates more tension in the aroma and added structure in the finish. The wine is described as complex and expressive, with a beautiful harmony of fruit, herbs, and subtle woody notes.
Grapes, harvest and selection in 2020
The grapes are harvested early in the morning and cooled upon arrival. Selection is done both manually and visually. The project's vineyards encompass over ninety hectares, providing ample selection to include only the best plots in the final blend. The addition of Graciano and Garnacha gives the wine a slight tension in the aromas and a fine freshness in the structure.
Fermentation and maturation of the wine
Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, partly with indigenous yeasts. This creates a natural, layered aroma. This is followed by aging for approximately sixteen months. Approximately half of the wine is aged in new French oak barriques, and the remainder in large foudres. The wine is also aged for several months in large barrels before bottling. The bottles then remain in the cellar for three years before release. This careful development produces a wine with depth, refinement, and long-lasting potency.
Color, smell and taste of Macán 2020
The color is deep ruby red. The aroma reveals ripe cherries, plums, and cassis, complemented by notes of mint, forest floor, cedar, and subtle spices. Some tasting notes even mention a light, fresh spiciness reminiscent of Graciano. The palate is juicy and textured with fine, elegant tannins. The finish is long, with a combination of fruit, oak, and a lively structure that lends tension to the whole.

The 2020 Macán includes new plots and Garnacha and Graciano grapes, and they harvested a little earlier. They select their best plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, and the grapes were cooled down for 24 hours before fermenting in oak vats with part of autochthonous yeasts. It matured 50% in new French oak barrels and 4,000-liter oak foudres for 16 months. The bottles are kept for three years before they're released. There were 98,835 bottles, 3,557 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in August 2022.
At their project in Rioja with Benjamin de Rothschild, they have implemented some changes: in 2016, they introduced large foudres for the fermentation; in 2021, they started using oak vats (21,000 liters) for the aging; and in 2020, they introduced Graciano and Garnacha as a field blend. From their 92 hectares of vineyards, they produce around 350,000 bottles per year.

Black plums, currants, black beans and touches of sandalwood, ash and cigar box on the nose. Juicy and full-bodied, with really fine-grained tannins and a long, linear finish that lingers. Really poised. Needs at least two more years to come around.

The 2020 Macán from Rioja Alavesa aged for one year in barrels and foudres, followed by six months in vats. The nose features expectorant notes—likely from the dash of Graciano—along with cassis, black fruit, plum, forest floor, cedar and mint. Slightly concentrated, it is juicy and textured, with fine tannins and a lingering finish of fruit and oak. The 2020 is complex and expressive.
