domaine Stéphane Ogier and the tradition of Côte-Rôtie
Domaine Stéphane Ogier is one of the leading producers in the northern Rhône. The estate is located in Ampuis, the historic heart of the Côte-Rôtie. The family has worked for generations in the steep vineyards where Syrah plays a dominant role. The vineyards are situated on terraces with a mix of slate, mica, and granite. These soils produce wines with aromatic precision, tension, and length.
Stéphane Ogier is known for a meticulous approach in both the vineyard and the cellar. The grapes are harvested by hand, plot by plot. Since 2018, he has been working without new oak in his Côte-Rôties. He primarily uses larger Austrian demi-muids to preserve the fruit's clarity. This choice produces wines with pure aromas and an elegant style.
the terroir of Côte-Rôtie and the style of Mon Village
Côte-Rôtie is known for its steep slopes and cool, continental climate. The mistral keeps the vineyards dry and ensures healthy grapes. The soils vary by lieu-dit, from granite in Côte Brune to mica and slate in Côte Blonde. The wines from this region display red fruit, floral notes, and refined tannins.
Mon Village is a selection from various plots in and around Ampuis. This cuvée offers a broad impression of the appellation. The style is accessible, refined, and focused on fruit. It's a wine that truly showcases the estate's signature.
2021 harvest year in Côte-Rôtie
The 2021 vintage yielded fresh and light wines. Cooler conditions allowed for slow ripening. The grapes achieved sufficient aromatic development without heavy alcohol. This results in wines with pure notes and an elegant character.
vinification and maturation of Mon Village 2021
The grapes are completely destemmed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, with gentle extraction to preserve the fruit structure. The wine is aged in larger wooden barrels without new wood. This process emphasizes the purity of the fruit and finesse. The texture remains soft and round, without any dominant oak influences.
color, smell and taste profile
The color is ruby red with a light transparency. The aroma reveals raspberry, red cherry, floral notes, and a hint of wood smoke. On the palate, the wine is smooth, round, and balanced. The acidity adds freshness. The finish is clean with red fruit notes and subtle spice.

The only one of Ogier's 2019 Côte Rôties to be bottled at the time of my visit, the 2019 Cote Rotie Mon Village combines soft herbal notes with notions of ripe cherries and strawberry compote. It's medium to full-bodied, supple and almost creamy in texture on the mid-palate, then finishes with a wash of soft, dusty tannins. Reasonably complex and harmonious, it's a nice wine to drink over the rest of the decade.
Stéphane was dutifully manning the sorting table outside the winery when I arrived Saturday morning, September 25. I'd caught him on his busiest day of the year. With the forecast calling for rain tomorrow, he was picking his ripest fruit—including grapes from Lancement and La Côte Blonde. After setting me up with a score of samples in his modern tasting room, he hurried back down below to the winery. Next year, when he tells me, "We picked those parcels before the rain," I'll know he's actually telling the truth.
Once I finished tasting the wines he had lined up, I headed back down to get his thoughts on the recent vintages. "If I have to make a choice," he said, "I put 2019 first. I love this vintage. It reminds me of 1999—rich, dense, but balanced." Having given lofty ratings to his single-vineyard bottlings from that year (from barrel), I wouldn't argue with his assessment.
Ogier went on to say that 2018 "shows the most heat, but more generous yields, so the wines are still balanced." He said it's a year that reminds him more of 2009 than 2015—dense and rich, but without the hard tannins of 2015. Regarding the 2020 vintage, he told me that he's surprised at how fresh and elegant the wines are. "I thought it would be more like 2018," he said. "But it's more seductive from barrel, and I think they'll be like 2016 but with more depth."

From: Northern Rhône: Where Diversity Ignites the Senses (Mar 2024)
Vinified from 100% destemmed grapes, the 2021 Côte-Rôtie Mon Village fares well in this challenging vintage. Raspberry, orange blossom, red cherry and delicate wood smoke are all nicely delineated. Medium-bodied, smooth and round, the 2021 can be enjoy over the course of the next five years.

At Domaine Stéphane Ogier, I had the pleasure of closing the gap in the Vinous’ database, tasting and comparing the wines of 2020, 2021 and 2022. Without the slightest doubt, 2020 is a towering success here, yielding some of the finest wines ever produced from this address–so layered, so fragrant, so deep and miles away from the more flamboyant and tannic 2019s. It’s hard not to fall in love with Ogier’s 2020s. The ravishingly beautiful Côte-Rôtie Fongeant, Côte-Rôtie Lancement and Côte-Rôtie La Belle Hélène knock it out of the park. It’s also worth noting that Ogier stopped using new oak for any of his Côte-Rôties beginning with the 2018 vintage. Furthermore, he increasingly gravitates toward Austrian oak demi-muids. At Ogier, two thousand twenty-two shares some stylistic similarities with 2020, but it’s yet to be seen if this vintage can reach the same quality. My initial assessment suggests that although 2022 is shaping up to be another excellent vintage here, the wines probably won’t reach the same stratospheric heights they achieved in 2020. In contrast to these two outstanding vintages, the challenging 2021 is represented by only two nonetheless solid Côte-Rôtie cuvées, Mon Village and Réserve. Two thousand twenty-one yielded fresh and pleasant wines, but they don’t offer the same depth and ripeness compared to 2020 or 2022.
