Description
The 2018 Red Blend TD-9 is a blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 58% Merlot. Deep garnet purple in colour, seductive notes of mocha, tapenade and truffles leap from the glass, supported by a core of cassis and stewed plums. Full, juicy and soft on the palate, with a lively line and a deliciously pure, fruity finish.
FACT: TD-9 is a proprietary blend that celebrates a bold move. In 1973, over the course of a few months, John Shafer set out to teach himself to drive a TD-9 tractor in his Napa Valley vineyard. He had never grown grapes or made wine before in his life. That spirit of risk-taking and adventure still guides Shafer today and inspires every vintage of this wine.

ABOUT SHAFER VINEYARDS
Shafer Vineyards was founded in 1972, when John Shafer, after a successful career in publishing, together with his son Doug, purchased vineyards on the Silverado Trail in Napa Valley. They purchased 84 hectares, of which 12 were planted with vines. A program of replanting and replanting was immediately implemented. From the start, the Shafers have been very innovative. The goal was to arrive at a completely natural way of growing grapes and making wine. By growing clover and peas, among other things, which in addition to preventing erosion also form a rich humus layer, bees and other insects are attracted that ensure optimal pollination and a natural habitat. The use of pesticides can therefore be avoided. Winemaker Elias Fernandez has been working at Shafer since 1994 and is considered one of the most talented winemakers in Napa.

A blend of 58% Merlot and 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Red Blend TD-9 displays a medium to deep garnet-purple color and expressive notes of blueberry compote, mulberries and plum preserves plus nuances of potpourri, dried Provence herbs and tar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a lively backbone creating great tension with the ripe, plummy flavors and rounded tannins, finishing with an enticing herbal lift.

This has a meaty nose with grilled plums, smoke, tapenade and dried leaves. Some tomato paste. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Broad and flavorful with a distinctively savory, saline finish. 56% merlot, 23% cabernet sauvignon and 21% malbec. Better from 2021.
