Description
Bathed in sunlight on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, at the northern end of the Mount Veeder appellation, the Veeder Peak vineyard sits at an elevation of 550 meters. Since 1995, Lokoya has produced a Cabernet Sauvignon here from select parcels in the steep, mountainous terrain. The struggle to survive in these volcanic soils forces the vines to search deep for nutrients, resulting in berries with intensely concentrated fruit. The wines display distinctive characteristics of violets and blue fruits, with powerful tannins and exceptional aging potential.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, 94% of which are new. Deep garnet purple in colour, it rises from the glass with vibrant scents of black cherry, black raspberry and blackcurrant pastilles, followed by nuances of pencil shavings, churned earth, lilac and undergrowth, plus a hint of broken stone. The full-bodied palate is taut, full of muscular, powerful black fruit, with a rock-solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and finishes with a real firework of earthy/mineral sparks. Give it a good 4-5 years in bottle and drink for the next 25+ years. 4,000 bottles were made and the wine has received very high ratings including a 100/100 from Suckling.

Blackberries, herbs, green pine needles, blackcurrants and lead pencil. Full-bodied with incredible structure and powerful tannins. It goes on for minutes. The structure is something else. Muscular, but the tannins give form and focus to the beautiful fruit. Mountain-grown Latour! Extraordinary. Try after 2026.

From: Napa Valley’s Thrilling 2018s & 2019s, Parts 1 & 2 (Jan 2021)
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder is such a great example of the appellation. It is at once powerful and yet light on its feet. Red berry fruit, iron, dried herbs and rose petals infuse the 2018 with myriad layers of nuance that reveal themselves with time in the glass. The 2018 needs time to fully come together, we are on Mt. Veeder after all, but it has so much potential. Red fruit, pomegranate, blood orange, gravel and dried herbs linger. The 2018 is impenetrable and massively tannic, and yet it comes across as so sophisticated.

Lokoya, Founded in 1995 is a collection of four distinct Cabernet Sauvignons from four of Napa Valley's most celebrated mountain appellations: Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain and Diamond Mountain. These limited production wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with native yeast and bottled unfined and unfiltered, resulting in the purest expression of the terroir. All vineyard locations can shine with the climate, soil and sunlight all fully reflected in the glass.
Given the high location, the vineyards require constant attention. The deep understanding of the vineyard trajectory in each vintage comes from winemaker Christopher Carpenter's years of expertise. Intervention is kept to a minimum, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, allowing the fruit to express itself as naturally and eloquently as possible. At Lokoya they call this MOUNTAIN WINEMAKING.
All wines have the highest possible ratings from international wine critics such as Parker, Wine Spectator and Suckling and are all in the 95-100 region. The wines belong in the list with Harlan and Bond.
Wines from the mountainous slopes of Napa Valley take time to develop and show their full potential. The intense tannin structure and flavor concentration of Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon provide the optimal profile for aging. These are wines that are intended to lie and mature for 30 years or more.
