Description
Bathed in sunlight on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, at the northern end of the Mount Veeder appellation, the Veeder Peak vineyard sits at an elevation of 550 meters. Since 1995, Lokoya has produced a Cabernet Sauvignon here from select parcels in the steep, mountainous terrain. The struggle to survive in these volcanic soils forces the vines to search deep for nutrients, resulting in berries with intensely concentrated fruit. The wines display distinctive violet and blue fruit characteristics, with powerful tannins and exceptional aging potential.
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain was aged for 22 months in French oak, 92% of which was new. Deep garnet purple in colour, the nose is initially closed but slowly opens up to reveal earthy/rocky scents above a core of blackcurrant, blackberry and mulberry with emerging hints of lead pencil lead and green peppercorn. Medium to full bodied, the palate presents a rock-solid framework of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness with mineral notes intertwined with the black fruit, finishing long with some evocative floral notes coming through.

A softer and rounder rendition of Spring Mountain with blackberry and blueberry, as well as oyster shell. Full-bodied with round, juicy tannins and gorgeous fruit and length. Great finish. Tight and focused. Superb. Try after 2026, but attractive now.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain is rich, sumptuous and exotic in its beauty. Inky red/purplish fruit, rose petal, spice and blood orange all build as the 2018 reveals its personality. The Spring Mountain is the softest of the Lokoya Cabernets, in relative terms of course, as all these wines require cellaring.

Lokoya, Founded in 1995 is a collection of four distinct Cabernet Sauvignons from four of Napa Valley's most celebrated mountain appellations: Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain and Diamond Mountain. These limited production wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with native yeast and bottled unfined and unfiltered, resulting in the purest expression of the terroir. All vineyard locations can shine with the climate, soil and sunlight all fully reflected in the glass.
Given the high location, the vineyards require constant attention. The deep understanding of the vineyard trajectory in each vintage comes from winemaker Christopher Carpenter's years of expertise. Intervention is kept to a minimum, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, allowing the fruit to express itself as naturally and eloquently as possible. At Lokoya they call this MOUNTAIN WINEMAKING.
All wines have the highest possible ratings from international wine critics such as Parker, Wine Spectator and Suckling and are all in the 95-100 region. The wines belong in the list with Harlan and Bond.
Wines from the mountainous slopes of Napa Valley take time to develop and show their full potential. The intense tannin structure and flavor concentration of Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon provide the optimal profile for aging. These are wines that are intended to lie and mature for 30 years or more.
