Description
About Domaine Michel Niellon
Domaine Michel Niellon, nestled in the heart of Chassagne-Montrachet, has been renowned for decades for its classic Chardonnay style. Since the 1950s, the estate has become a benchmark in the Côte de Beaune. Today, Michel Niellon collaborates with his son-in-law, Michel Coutoux, maintaining traditional methods: hand harvesting, minimal intervention, and a pure expression of terroir. Their wines are rare and sought after by both connoisseurs and sommeliers.
Clos de la Maltroie 1er Cru in 2016
Clos de la Maltroie is a walled premier cru vineyard in the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet. The clay-limestone soil with good drainage produces wines that are simultaneously powerful and refined. The 2016 vintage was characterized by low yields after a spring frost, followed by an ideal late summer that produced healthy, aromatic grapes. This resulted in a balanced wine with tension, length, and precision.
Vinification and style
The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, about a quarter of which are new. The wine is aged for approximately 12 months on the fine lees. Bâtonnage is deliberately kept to a minimum to preserve freshness and structure. The result is a wine with subtle oak notes, lively acidity, and a pronounced minerality.
Smell, taste and assessment
In the glass, the wine displays a light golden color. The nose opens with aromas of citrus, green apple, and white flowers, followed by hazelnut, wet stone, and a hint of brioche. On the palate, the wine is layered and taut, with a core of ripe fruit, crisp acidity, and a long, dry finish with chalky minerality. According to wine journalists, the 2016 Clos de la Maltroie is "energetic, tense, and complex," with Decanter and Vinous both praising its aging potential and pure terroir expression. The wine scored between 91 and 93 points from international critics.
Why order this wine?
Michel Niellon's 2016 Clos de la Maltroie is a magnificent representative of premier cru Chassagne-Montrachet. The combination of a renowned producer, classic vinification, and a strong vintage makes this wine an excellent choice for lovers of refined Burgundy. Ideal for drinking now or allowing it to mature for a few years in the cellar.

Notes of crisp orchard fruit, white flowers, toasted nuts and pastry cream preface the 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Maltroie, a medium to full-bodied, bright and satiny wine with fine depth at the core, tangy acids and good grip on the delicately oak-inflected finish.
It was with sadness that I learned of the passing of Michel Niellon while this report was going to press. He must have been content, however, to leave the domaine in such good hands, as his son-in-law, Michel Coutoux, is routinely producing wines of impressively consistent quality and style. 2019 is another fine success, delivering beautifully balanced wines with plenty of concentration and cut. As readers may remember, house fingerprint here is distinctive, with a touch of toasty oak from Saint-Romain's Tonnellerie Gillet marking each cuvée and the wines dependably distinguishing themselves with lovely texture and concentration. This is a domaine in fine form today, and as I've written before, readers who have fallen out of touch with the wines are advised to reacquaint themselves with this excellent producer.

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos de la Maltroie 1er Cru is actually more backward on the nose compared to the Village Cru, tightly coiled with mineral-driven, malic fruit. The palate is well balanced with neatly integrated oak on the entry. Fresh and saline, there’s ample grip toward the finish, with just a touch of grilled walnut and fine length. Excellent. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London.

Domaine Michel Niellon is a winery located in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation in the Côte de Beaune region (Burgundy, France).
History of Domaine Michel Niellon
The Niellon family has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 19th century when the family was founded by Michel Niellon's grandfather, Léon Niellon. In the 1960s, Michel Niellon took over the family business from his father, Marcel Niellon, and continued the tradition of producing exceptional Burgundian wines. The estate has six hectares of vineyards, mainly located in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. The vineyards are located at different altitudes between 200 and 400 meters, which contributes to the unique character of their wines. Michel Niellon keeps it traditional. Many of their vineyards still contain vines planted by Marcel Niellon in 1926. When replanting is necessary, they use low yielding clones to ensure the grapes produced are highly concentrated and of superior quality.
Production by Michel Niellon
Domaine Michel Niellon is characterized by meticulous attention to detail. Both the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay are picked by hand and strictly selected for quality. The fermentation process is initiated using the natural yeasts present on the grape skins. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a portion of new wood (typically 15% to 30%). Malolactic conversion and Sur Lie also take place in these wooden barrels. Domaine Michel Niellon is known for producing high-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. Their icon, the Bâtard-Montrachet, is highly regarded. In addition, the Chassagne-Montrachet's of this product are known worldwide for their exceptional quality.
