Description
The ViƱa Ardanza Reserva from the classic Rioja house La Rioja Alta is a blend of Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha from 30-year-old vines in Fuenmayor and Cenicero. After fermentation, the Tempranillo portion of the wine was aged for 36 months in American oak barriques. The Garnache portion spent 36 months in 2- to 3-year-old barrels. After bottling, the wine matured for another four and a half years in bottle before release. The nose is very fresh, with ripe black fruit, earthy notes, minerals, coffee, and tobacco. On the palate, it is wonderfully soft and juicy, with creamy tannins and well-integrated, fine acidity. And then there's the finish! It is long, vibrant, and elegant. A superb (ageing) wine (2037).

No 2018 was produced, so after the 2017 I tasted last year, we jumped to the 2019 ViƱa Ardanza Reserva, produced with a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. It fermented destemmed in stainless steel and aged in American oak barrels, 36 months for the Tempranillo and 30 months for Garnacha, and was blended before bottling. 2019 is a very good year for them, a small crop of powerful and concentrated wines when they produced all their brands, an exception. This is spicy, structured, balanced and powerful in this warm year, reaching the customary 14.5% alcohol and keeping a pH of 3.54 and 5.5 grams of acidity. It's still very young and undeveloped, with the classical profile, generous in American oak aromas and flavors that should slowly integrate in the wine with years in bottle. For them, 2019 means a change in Ardanza, less spicy (but still quite spicy, with clove, vanilla and tobacco leaves) and with more fresh fruit from the Garnacha. But the year is a modern version of 2015. 500,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2023. No 2023 or 2024 will be produced either.
La Rioja Alta is introducing the sixth generation of the family with Guillermo and Alex de Aranzabal Bittner. The Haro winery has 587 hectares of vineyards and only produces wines from their own grapes. They age their wines in 35,000 barrels and produce an average of 1.5 million bottles per year. There's a stellar 2016 Gran Reserva 904 this year, but there will be no Gran Reserva 890 until they release the 2015 in 2028...

A more vibrant and fruitier expression of Ardanza this year with strawberries, mussels, warm spices and berries. Round and silky on the palate with lovely spices and a long, nicely saline finish. A nice touch of creaminess works really well here and further extends the finish. 80% tempranillo and 20% garnacha. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Reserva ViƱa Ardanza is a blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha from Rioja Alta. Its bouquet opens with cherry liqueur, black fruit and balsamic herbs alongside a touch of pepper. Dry, silky and just fresh enough, it offers good body with agility, polished tannins and a velvety feel. The long, sapid finish continues with gentle grip. This is balanced and expressiveāa classic Rioja with a modern, fruit-driven flourish.

We write the year 1890. Five Basque winegrowers from the Rioja set up the 'Sociedad VinĆcola de la Rioja Alta' in Haro on 10 July, thereby laying the foundation for the production of high-quality wines. From the very beginning, it is done professionally.
The French oenologist Vigier, who at the time was considered the authority in the field of wine knowledge, is recruited as an expert. In the year 1891 the wine gets its final name 'La Rioja Alta'. It is the birth of a legend. It would take until 1941 for the first wine to be registered as a trademark. This was the famous ViƱa Ardanza, still one of the most important wines of the Bodega. In the past, all barrels were made in their own cooperage. After a longer break, that tradition was restored in 2002. The wood imported from America dries for two years before being processed into barrels. 1970 was an important year with a new barrel cellar, the expansion of the vineyards and the purchase of excellent plots. This also meant the birth of ViƱa Arana and ViƱa Alberdi. Today, the winery is one of the classics of the Rioja. Wines such as the 'Gran Reserva 890' and 'Gran Reserva 904' are unforgettable experiences. But the above mentioned reserves are also excellent wines for those who love matured wines and the traditional rioja style. A jewel among the venerable bodegas!
