Description
In 1981, Mas Martinet was born, a lifelong project and a dream come true. The brand is the result of the passion of Josep Lluís Pérez and Montse Ovejero and is now owned by the entire family: Josep Lluís, Montse, Sara, Núria, Adrià, Marc, Jordi, Armando, and Pilar. The unique wines of Mas Martinet in Priorat have enormous aging potential. For over 25 years, Martinet has reigned at the top of the Priorat appellation. In recent years, father Pérez has retired from Mas Martinet, and the wines are now vinified by Sara Pérez (see also Venus, Dido, and Gratallops ). Sara is also the wife of another icon, René Barbier Jr., known for Clos Mogador , and René and Sara also make wines under their own names, Sara Pérez y René Barbier. Naturally, we also carry these wines.
Clos Martinet comes from the plots of the Mas d'en Martinet estate, located in the wine region of the town of Gratallops. The slate-rich land and the varying exposures of the vineyards give this wine the typical character of an estate each year. Mas Martinet is one of the pioneers of the new Priorat, the Pérez family's project. Since 2017, they no longer use a sorting table or a cypress, but all their fermentations are with the grapes' yeasts; and they stopped chilling the grapes 15 years ago. From 2006 to 2016, they increased the number of full bunches in their fermentations, which are now 100% full bunches for all wines except the Martinet Bru.
They have 25 hectares of vineyards across five different locations, cultivated organically and biodynamically using permaculture and regenerative agriculture. The Martinet Bru comes partly from an estate called Mas Seró, located in the Masos de Falset region of the Serra Alta, at an altitude of 400 meters and facing southwest, and another estate in Torroja, which is colder and deeper. It is a blend of Garnatxa Negra, Carinyena, Sirà, and a small amount of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, naturally made organically/biodynamically without chemicals.
Els Escurçons is a tribute to Priorat before phylloxera, when people cultivated the higher elevations, particularly the Garnacha. This wine is a 100% Garnacha from a vineyard at an altitude of 600 meters, the highest estate in Priorat, situated on iron-rich schist land. The vines are still original, ungrafted. This is an exceptionally fine and elegant wine that showcases the finest slopes of Priorat. Fermented in amphorae and also aged in glass demijohns, it displays the typical structure, power, and rusticity of Priorat, yet with the elegance and delicate ripeness that only grapes from extremely old vines can achieve. Els Escurçons has a beautiful nose of fine red fruit such as wild strawberries and raspberries, and is exceptionally refined and elegant on the palate. The wine has a long, fresh, elegant, and grand finish. This is a top-notch Grenache, rarely encountered, with excellent aging potential. Only around 3,500 wines of this fantastic wine are made.

From one of the highest vineyards in Priorat at 600 metres, the outstanding 2009 Els Escurcons is a pure Garnacha grown on llicorella (slate) soils with a higher ferrous content, its red tinge indicating abundant oxygen in the soil. The nose is very powerful, with layers of blackberry, briary, hot slate and a touch of white pepper. Like Mas Martinet’s other 2009s, it demands coaxing from the glass but it is worth the wait. The palate is beautifully balanced with immense succulence and intensity counterbalanced by crisp, driving acidity that lends it great verve and what I describe as “controlled opulence.” There are layers of pure, macerated black cherries and cassis caressing the satin-like finish. This wine is bestowed with superb persistency, the acidity and definition urging you to take another sip, and bridled with a sense of vitality and animation that is entrancing. Drink 2014-2025+.
When making a maiden visit to a wine region and knocking on the door of properties, there will always been one that stands out from the rest. There will be one where the wine enraptures and stimulates the senses unlike any other and offers food for thought long after you have departed with renewed spring in your step. On this occasion, it was Mas Martinet. My senses were almost overwhelmed by the thrilling wines and winemaker Sara Perez’s passionate explanation of her philosophies, which challenge the status quo in Priorat. Now here’s a winemaker thinking outside the box. Her father, Jose Luis Perez, one of the pioneers of Priorat, stood by her side in silence, not wishing to interrupt his daughter’s flow. I wonder whether he envisaged the heights that Mas Martinet would achieve all those years ago? I asked whether Sara’s approach differs from her husband, Rene Barbier of Clos Mogador fame (she pointed out, the younger Rene of the family!) Sara replied that there is a divergence in opinion of when to pick, Rene “Senior” preferring the latest date, Sara the earliest and her husband somewhere in the middle. Who is right? Well, why should there be a single interpretation? Then again, I thought the wines of Mas Martinet demonstrated their terroir with more clarity than any other Priorat winery in 2009 and 2010.

At Mas Martinet, all chemicals in the vineyards have been banned. Sara and her team at Martinet are always looking for new perspectives, with a culture based on balance, sustainability and harmony with nature. Deeply committed to tradition, to the environment and to people. They recover some varieties and reinvent some processes and materials according to the principles of agroecology and minimal intervention with maximum respect for the people who work on it. They process the crops in an environmentally friendly manner, treating the processes as respectfully as possible. Examples include growing legumes and wild species of flowers and shrubs in order to provide food for the entire chain. they base us on the lunar calendar to optimize (bio-dynamic) the natural treatments we use in the vineyard, such as compost and herbal infusions.

The wine press is unanimous in its praise for the wines of this iconic house. Wines getting points close to the maximum limit of 100 points is standard rather than exceptional. Supply from the relatively small stamp vineyards is very limited and the storage potential of the wines is unprecedentedly long.
