Sinds de overname in 1995 door de Nederlandse zakenman Eric Albada Jelgersma is Chateau Giscours met haar fantastische terroir weer helemaal terug. Het domein bemeet ruim 80 hectare wijngaard en produceert een zeer betrouwbare maar vooral klassieke Margaux met veel diepgang. De 2021 Giscours is een blend van 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot en 3% Petit Verdot. Het is een medium tot full-bodied wijn met mooie tonen van espresso, rood fruit, (kers, framboos) zoethout, leder en heeft een zeer verfijnde geur van bloemen en fruit met een niet overheersende doch mooi aanwezig eiken tonen. In de mond is de wijn rond, sappig en kan nu al gedronken worden maar ook gerust nog 30 jaar worden weggelegd.

2021 Giscours

The 2021 Giscours is immensely promising and shows just how far this important estate has come in the last few years. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berries, cigar wrapper, violets, sweet forest floor and burning embers, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with terrific depth at the core, ripe tannins, lively acids and a long, penetrating finish. With wines like this, we're back to a level of quality that Giscours hasn't routinely attained since the 1970s! The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot; and even if by the standards of the last decade, that isn't a particularly elevated percentage of Cabernet, this is nonetheless a very Cabernet-driven wine in style. Tasted six times.

A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, the 2020 Giscours reveals a deep garnet-purple color and compelling notes of crushed redcurrants, plum preserves and Morello cherries, leading to hints of lavender, wild sage, damp soil and black truffles with a touch of licorice. The medium-bodied palate bursts with vibrant red and black fruits and lots of savory accents, supported by soft, very well managed tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note.

The 2021 Giscours is fabulous. In fact, the 2021 is one of the best Giscours in recent memory. Silky and impeccable in its balance, the 2012 possesses magnificent elegance that brings out its pedigreed personality. Rose petal, lavender, spice, gravel and black cherry all come together, framed by silky tannins that wrap it all up. The 2021 is less aromatic than most recent vintages, but the depth here is considerable, as is the potential. Taste two times.

From: Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Giscours is every bit as compelling as it was from barrel. Succulent dark cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, menthol and mocha fill out the layers nicely. There's a good bit of Merlot in this year, which lends quite a bit of mid-palate juiciness and textural depth, but there is also plenty of supporting structure underneath. The 2020 is both flamboyant and serious, a pretty appealing combination, I have to say. Tasted two times.

Giscours was in een bedenkelijke staat toen Nicolas Tari het verwierf in 1954. Er volgden forse investeringen en de kwaliteit ging met sprongen vooruit. In 1995 kwam Giscours in bezit van de Nederlandse grootgrutter (supermarkten o.m. Super de Boer en Edah) Eric Albada Jelgersma die ook hier net als op zijn andere bezitting Château du Tertre zeer fors investeerde en de kwaliteit verder verhoogde door een rigoreus her-en bijplantingsprogramma. De kelders werden vergoot en nieuwe apparatuur werd aangeschaft. Vandaag de dag is Giscours weer “de grand seigneur” die het ooit was en een 3e cru waardig. Met 200 ha waarvan 80 ha wijngaard één van de grootste bezittingen in de Médoc.
