The grüner veltliner is a white grape variety that is common in Austria, but also in Hungary, where the name is Zöldveltelini. DNA research has shown that the grüner veltliner grape is a cross between the traminer and St. Georgener.

As mentioned, the grüner veltliner grape is common in Austria. About 30% of all vineyards in Austria are planted with the Grüner Veltliner grape. The grape is characterized by late ripening. Grapes that ripen late need a warm fall to fully develop. A disadvantage of a long growing season is that grapes then lose their much-needed acids. However, this does not happen with grüner veltliner and that can be called unique. A good grüner veltliner harvest has ripe, sugar-rich grapes with strong, soft acids.

The taste of a Grüner Veltliner wine?

Most Grüner Veltliner wines are dry and fresh with the juicy aromas of white fruits like apple and pear to the lush of exotic fruits like pineapple and nectarine. Characteristic is the tantalizing spicy note of freshly ground pepper. Furthermore, there are striking the fresh, soft acids that give the wine spice and tension.
