Niederosterreich

Niederösterreich is the area north and west of Vienna. It includes the extensive Weinviertel and a number of smaller areas along or near the Danube. This concerns the Wachau – the most prestigious area in all of Austria – Kremstal and Kamptal. The most commonly planted grape varieties here are Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, with a production of predominantly white wines. The vineyards in the suburbs of Vienna also fall under Lower Austria. This makes Vienna the only capital that is an area of origin for wine! With its 27,000 hectares of vineyards, Lower Austria is by far the largest wine region in Austria.

Wine regions

The area has 8 wine regions.

Wachau: Famous for its steep terraced vineyards and premium white wines, with an emphasis on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.

Kamptal: Known for its dry white wines and especially the fresh, mineral-rich Grüner Veltliner.

Kremstal: Offers both white and red wines, with the Grüner Veltliner and Riesling being the stars.

Weinviertel: The largest wine region in Lower Austria, best known for its spicy Grüner Veltliner.

Traisental: An emerging area that produces great white wines, including the aforementioned grape varieties.

Thermenregion: Here you will find both white and red wines, with Zierfandler and Rotgipfler as interesting native grape varieties.

Carnuntum: Red wines, especially Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, thrive in this area.

Wagram: This area is known for its refreshing white wines, especially Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, and has a growing reputation.

History

During the modern era, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries, Niederösterreich played an important role in Austria's political and economic development. It was involved in events such as the Revolution of 1848 and the First World War. Today, Niederösterreich is a thriving state with a rich cultural heritage, beautiful landscapes and an important role in Austrian wine production. The area is of great importance to Austria, both historically and today.
