Description
The journey of the wine importer Miguel Sánchez to Atauta was a stroke of luck for the entire region. On his way through the Ribera del Duero he discovered the small valley with its ancient, abandoned vineyards, more than 400 year old wine cellars, ancient cellar vaults and even the stone wine presses from the 13th century were still there. A wine wonderland that had fallen asleep. The east of the DO was known for being difficult to exploit, because the vines are at a considerable altitude of almost 1,000 meters. Miguel Sánchez came, saw and conquered: the youngest Tempranillo vines are 60 years old, the oldest vines are up to 160 years old, truly unbelievable. An immense wealth! They immediately gave exceptionally beautiful results, after the overgrown plots had been kissed awake. With the appearance of the first wines it became immediately clear that this was not only one of the best wines in the entire country, but even in the entire world! The strictly organic and parcel by parcel separately matured wines are among the best ever obtained from the Tempranillo grape variety.
The harvest of the 1.39 hectares divided into 19 micro-plots of 140 years old in the Llanos del Almendro area took place on October 20, 2016, with a harvest of 2,943 kg. After a double selection of bunches and grapes, the wine was put into barrel by gravity in a 1,000 liter stainless steel tank. After 7 days of cold maceration at a temperature below 10ºC and 2 punch-downs per day, the wine fermented for 12 days with its own yeasts at a maximum temperature of 27ºC, adjusting the number of daily punch-downs according to its needs. After the alcoholic fermentation, it macerated for 14 days with the skins, looking for the right structural point. Malolactic fermentation and maturation for 16 months in French oak barrels for second use.
The Llanos des Almendro 2012 is made from 100% Tinto Fino and has been aged in oak for 20 months. In the glass the wines have a cherry color. Intense and incredibly complex wine. Mix of aromas and flavors of ripe red and black berries, combined with balsamic notes of black licorice and hints of bitter almonds. It is elegant and silky on the palate and develops a great and long persistent finish.

As with other "paraje" bottlings (from very small plots in the same zone of the village), I tasted the 2012 Llanos del Almendro next to the 2013, and I was able to see how different the two vintages are. The grapes here achieved 15% alcohol and come from a north-facing slope at 965 meters in altitude planted with ancient vines. The wine fermented in small stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in second use French oak barrels for a period of 16 months. 2012 was a super dry year, quite the opposite of 2013. This is one elegant and powerful Ribera, with the freshness of the zone and soil and the power given by the natural concentration of the vintage. 1,489 bottles were filled in July 2014.
The 2013s were terrific, and scoring them is splitting hairs. Ultimately, it comes down to taste: if you prefer the more mineral Llanos del Almendro or the power of Valdegatiles. The two projects to resume producing San Juan and La Mala are great, but they are produced in tiny quantities, which makes them almost impossible to obtain.

Dominio de Atauta Ribera del Duero Llanos del Almendro 2012 | $155
A dense and polished version, this red offers a balance of fruit and savory notes, with plum, graphite, licorice, tar and smoke hints. A bit reserved for now, but balanced, harmonious, powerful and graceful overall. Best from 2016 through 2030. 50 cases imported.

From: Central Spain: Tempranillo and Beyond (Dec 2015)
(fermented in concrete vats and then aged for 20 months in used French oak barriques): Brilliant ruby-red. Explosively perfumed red and dark berry scents are complemented by spicecake, incense and smoky minerals. Stains the palate with sweet black raspberry and floral pastille flavors, putting on weight and becoming spicier with aeration. Shows a compelling blend of richness and finesse, with a vibrant, mineral-driven, strikingly persistent finish framed by silky, harmonious tannins.
