Description
The Dominio de Atauta is a wonderfully fresh, medium-bodied wine with excellent acidity. The nose reveals leather, cocoa, tobacco, and lovely red fruit and black currants. The wine has a very pleasant, long finish. Highly rated by Suckling, Parker, and Vinous. This is a great wine that is (still) affordable and can best be described as a wine with power and balance. Fantastic!
More about Dominio de Atauta
Wine importer Miguel Sánchez's trip to Atauta was a stroke of luck for the entire region. Traveling through the Ribera del Duero, he discovered the small valley with its ancient, abandoned vineyards, wine cellars over 400 years old, ancient vaults, and even the stone wine presses from the 13th century still standing. A wine wonderland that has fallen asleep.
The eastern part of the DO was notoriously difficult to cultivate, as the vines are situated at a considerable altitude of nearly 1,000 meters. Miguel Sánchez came, saw, and conquered: the youngest Tempranillo vines are 60 years old, while the oldest vines are up to 160 years old—truly incredible. An immense wealth! They immediately yielded exceptionally beautiful results after the overgrown plots were awakened. With the appearance of the first wines, it was immediately clear that these were not only some of the finest wines in the entire country, but even in the world! The strictly organic wines, aged individually, plot by plot, are among the finest ever produced from the Tempranillo grape.

There is great purity and freshness in the 2021s, and the eponymous 2021 Dominio de Atauta is no exception. Produced with a selection from their best vineyards in the Atauta Valley, it is complex and has depth, good ripeness, 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.63 and 5.05 grams of acidity. They have 25 different terroirs, and this blend comes with complexity, power and elegance, reflecting the conditions of the place and the vintage, with added freshness. It fermented in 5,000-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured for 13months in French oak barrels, 15% of them new, followed by another four months in oak vats to achieve a better stabilization of the wine. 2021 delivered a good crop, and they produced 58,494 bottles and 1,260 magnums. This is among the finest vintages for the cuvée. It was bottled in June 2023.

Ripe red cherries, strawberries and some blue fruit and minerals. A touch of white pepper. Full and fine-boned, with chalky tannins on the palate. Long and tight, with signature Atauta tension and reactive tannins from the 130-year-old ungrafted vines in the cooler part of Ribera del Duero. Very long, juicy and minerally, if not a bit salty. Drink or hold.

From: Duero: From Ribera to Toro via Rueda (And a Few Other Detours) (Jun 2025)
The 2021 Dominio de Atauta comes from hillside vineyards in Atauta, Ribera del Duero, with clay and sandy soils. It was fermented in vats and aged up to 16 months in oak (15% new), followed by time in large casks. Red fruit leads the nose, with rosehip, wild herbs and a hint of nutmeg. The palate is juicy, compact and agile, where chalk sets the tone and elongates the finish. A vibrant, expressive Ribera shaped by the climatic edge of Atauta.
