Description
The Dominio de Atauta is a great fresh medium bodied wine with a great good acidity . In the nose leather, cocoa, tobacco nice red fruit and blackberries. The wine has a very nice long finish. Very well rated by Suckling, Parker and Vinous This is a great wine that is (still) affordable and can best be summarized as a wine with Power and Balance. Great!
More about Dominio de Atauta
The journey of the wine importer Miguel Sánchez to Atauta was a stroke of luck for the whole region. Traveling through the Ribera del Duero he discovered the small valley with its ancient, abandoned vineyards, more than 400 years old wine cellars, ancient cellar vaults and even the stone wine presses from the 13th century were still there. A wine wonderland that has fallen asleep.
The eastern DO was known to be difficult to exploit, because the vines are at a considerable altitude of almost 1,000 meters. Miguel Sánchez came, saw and conquered: the youngest Tempranillo vines are 60 years old, the oldest vines are up to 160 years old, truly unbelievable. An immense wealth! They immediately gave exceptionally beautiful results, after the overgrown plots had been awakened. With the appearance of the first wines it immediately became clear that this was not only one of the best wines in the entire country, but even in the entire world! The strictly organic and plot by plot separately matured wines are among the best ever obtained from the Tempranillo grape variety.

Professional Reviews
Parker
The eponymous red 2016 Dominio de Atauta, the first vintage of winemaker Jaime Suárez, was truly impressive, bringing to mind the first vintages of the winery that broke the stereotype of concentrated and oaked Ribera del Duero in search of more freshness and showcasing the amazing but then unknown vineyards of the village of Atauta in the cooler part of the appellation in the province of Soria. It's a step up from the Parada de Atauta, with more depth and power, perhaps a little more ripeness too, and a tender and balanced mouthfeel with very integrated acidity. A tad more freshness would have been ideal... 59,637 bottles and 1,440 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2018.

Opaque ruby. Dark fruit compote, cola, pipe tobacco and licorice on the deeply perfumed nose; mocha and woodsmoke notes add complexity. Deep, warm and broad in the mouth, offering intense black and blue fruit liqueur flavors that pick up an energizing, spicy element with aeration. In a plush, ample style, finishing with sneaky tannins and a lingering suggestion of candied dark berries. Raised for 16 months in French oak barrels, 20% of them new.
