Alcohol-Free Wine: Quality Without Compromise

Alcohol-free and low-alcohol wines have seen a significant rise in popularity in recent years. Still, finding a truly good bottle without alcohol remains a challenge. At Grandcruwijnen, we’ve tasted hundreds of alcohol-free wines ourselves. Our conclusion? Only a limited number actually come close to the true wine experience. That’s why we are extremely selective. In our collection, you’ll only find alcohol-free wines that we personally deem to be of high quality — no compromises.

Alcohol-Free Tea: Elegant, Refined & Surprisingly Complex

Alcohol-free tea as an alternative to wine? Absolutely. Especially sparkling juicy tea is emerging as a gastronomic, non-alcoholic beverage. These special tea-based drinks, like those from Van Nahmen, are delicately fermented and enriched with natural flavors such as white tea, vanilla, and quince. The result is a sparkling drink with subtle tannins, floral and fruity aromas, and a long, elegant finish.

Fermented Juices: Beetroot With Character

Another unique category within the alcohol-free segment is fermented juices. Take for example the drinks from Feral, such as the version with red beet, juniper, and lavender: an intense, earthy, and spicy alternative to red wine. These drinks are low in sugar, rich in flavor layers, and have a complex structure due to fermentation — reminiscent of natural wine. Fermented juices are ideal for those looking for an alcohol-free option with real depth and pair beautifully with cheeses, roasted vegetables, or umami-rich Asian dishes.

How Is Alcohol-Free Wine Made?

Like regular wine, alcohol-free wine starts with grapes that are harvested, crushed, and fermented according to traditional winemaking methods. This process develops the wine’s aroma, structure, and alcohol. Only in the later stages is the alcohol removed, using different techniques to preserve as much flavor as possible.

SSC Technology (Spinning Cone Column)

This is one of the most advanced methods to de-alcoholize wine. The wine is first fully fermented and aged like any traditional wine. Then, using a physical process, aromas, alcohol, and moisture are separated. The aromas are reintroduced to the wine — preserving its scent, flavor, and character. While this is the most expensive technique, it’s also the most effective in retaining quality.

Vacuum Extraction

Another widely used method is vacuum extraction. Here, the wine is de-alcoholized at a low temperature (around 28°C) under vacuum pressure. The vacuum causes the alcohol to evaporate quickly, while the low temperature preserves delicate aromas. Volatile scent compounds are collected and re-added to the wine, ensuring maximum flavor retention. Finally, the wine is purified, filtered, and stabilized — ready for bottling.

Alcohol-Free Red Wine: Extra Tips for Taste and Serving Temperature

Alcohol-free red wine typically has a slightly lighter body than its alcoholic counterpart. That’s why it’s important to serve it lightly chilled — around 14–15°C. This keeps the wine fresh, fruity, and smooth. It’s ideal as an aperitif or with grilled vegetables, tomato-based pasta, or lighter meat dishes.

Taste and order by the bottle
Our range of alcohol-free wines is carefully curated. Whether red, white, rosé, or sparkling – there’s something for every palate. Each wine is available to order by the bottle, so no need to commit to full cases when exploring new favorites.
