Château Suduiraut 2024: classic Sauternes with precision and elegance

The Château Suduiraut 2024 is a beautiful embodiment of this iconic Premier Cru Classé from Sauternes. In a year characterized by extreme weather conditions, Suduiraut delivered a wine that combines finesse, intensity, and balance. Made entirely from 100% Sémillon and hand-harvested in four rigorous trials, this wine displays the full potential of noble rot.

Climate and harvest: from rain to gold

After an extremely wet autumn and winter, the growing season started early. Spring brought cool temperatures and challenges with powdery mildew and irregular flowering, but thanks to a dry, warm summer and windy weather in September, Botrytis cinerea was able to develop quickly and evenly.

The sweet wine harvest began on September 19 and ended on October 24 , with four separate tries:

  • First Trie: September 19–25, 5 batches

  • Second trie: October 2–11, 9 batches

  • Third batch: October 14–17, 6 batches

  • Fourth Triumvirate: October 23–24

The yield was very low: 11.3 hl/ha , which ensured maximum concentration.

Vinification and maturation of the 2024 Suduiraut Sauternes

Every step was carried out with the utmost care:

  • Gentle pneumatic pressing (3 hours), followed by vertical pressing (50 min),

  • Cold settling at 10°C,

  • Alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts in 50% new French oak barrels for 2 to 3 weeks,

  • Fermentation was slowed by cooling and light sulfitation.

The wine then matures for 16 to 20 months , partly in new barrels and partly in one-year-old barrels.

Suduiraut Sauternes Tasting Notes

The Château Suduiraut 2024 displays a bright golden yellow color. The nose offers aromas of candied citrus, tropical fruit, honey, blossom, and toasted almonds . On the palate, the wine is rich, silky, and layered, with a pronounced freshness ( 4.1 g/L acidity ) that is beautifully balanced by the 130 g/L residual sugar . The finish is long, pure, and intense.

Storage and wine-food pairing

Perfect with foie gras, roquefort, apricot crumble, or even spicy dishes with mango or coconut. This wine has excellent aging potential and can age for decades.

Château Suduiraut: Premier Cru Classé from the Heart of Sauternes

Château Suduiraut stands among the elite producers of Sauternes. Classified as a Premier Cru Classé in 1855, this estate has earned its reputation through centuries of excellence. With roots tracing back to the 16th century and vineyards adjacent to Château d’Yquem, Suduiraut is renowned for crafting refined sweet wines and, more recently, outstanding dry white cuvées from old vines.

A Unique Terroir in Preignac

Located in Preignac, in the southern part of Bordeaux, Château Suduiraut spans 91 hectares planted on a mosaic of gravelly sand and clay soils. The estate's proximity to the Ciron river ensures the morning mists and warm afternoons necessary for the development of Botrytis cinerea—the noble rot essential to the world’s greatest sweet wines.

Style: Luscious Sweet Wines, Vibrant Dry Whites

Suduiraut is famed for its 100% Sémillon-based Sauternes, distinguished by their clarity, length, and layered aromas of candied citrus, honey, flowers, and spice. The wines mature for 16 to 20 months in a combination of new and used French oak barrels, developing beautifully over decades.

In recent years, Suduiraut has also gained recognition for its dry white wines:

  • Château Suduiraut Vieilles Vignes Blanc Sec – a Grand Vin with depth and aging potential.
  • Pur Sémillon – a rare and pure expression of the grape.
  • Lions de Suduiraut – fresh, vibrant, and highly food-friendly.

Today, 65% of Suduiraut’s production is dedicated to dry whites, reflecting its innovative and forward-thinking winemaking philosophy.

Innovation Under AXA Millésimes

Since 1992, Château Suduiraut has been part of AXA Millésimes, the prestigious group behind leading estates such as Pichon Baron, Petit Village, and Quinta do Noval. Under the leadership of Christian Seely and technical director Pierre Montégut, both vineyard management and vinification have reached new heights. Traditional techniques are enhanced with modern precision—from gentle pressing and native yeast fermentation to tailored bâtonnage and barrel aging.
