Description
About Château l'If and its location in Saint-Émilion
Château l'If is owned by Jacques Thienpont, also known for Le Pin in Pomerol. In 2010, he acquired a small vineyard of approximately five hectares just outside the center of Saint-Émilion, a stone's throw from prestigious neighbors like Troplong-Mondot. Its location on a limestone plateau with clay and molasse soils offers ideal conditions for growing Merlot and Cabernet Franc. A cool maritime climate with Atlantic influences allows for slow ripening, resulting in wines with freshness and balance.
Soil structure and climatic conditions in 2024
The 2024 harvest took place after a long growing season, starting with a mild winter and early bud formation. Spring brought regular rainfall, requiring meticulous vineyard care. A dry, mild summer followed, allowing the grapes to ripen optimally. August and September were cool, promoting gradual ripening with a beautiful balance of sugar, acidity, and phenolic ripeness. The diverse soils—from fossil-bearing limestone to clay-containing slopes—produced expressive and energetic grapes.
Vinification and maturation of the Château l'If 2024
The blend consists of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The harvest took place between October 4th and 8th, 2024. Fermentation was carefully managed to preserve the freshness and purity of the fruit. The wine is aged for 12 to 16 months in oak barrels, 50% new and 50% previously used. This approach adds complexity without masking the character of the grapes.
Color, aroma and flavor profile of the wine
Château l'If 2024 displays a deep ruby red color. The nose reveals floral notes of violets, black cherries, and minerals from the limestone. On the palate, the wine offers a full body with silky tannins, a striking freshness, and precise length. The chalky terroir lends tension and finesse, while the ripe Merlot adds depth and roundness. The alcohol remains moderate (13%) and the acidity is vibrant, indicating excellent balance and aging potential.

Quite an aromatic wine with appetizing spiciness, white pepper, hibiscus and red berries. Juicy and bright, with a medium body, fine-etched chalky tannins and a long, bright finish. Very pure fruit with excellent texture and mid-palate roundness. 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc.

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 L'If is an elegant, sleek wine. Crushed flowers, tobacco, cedar, incense, dried herbs and menthol give the 2024 lovely aromatic presence. L'If is light on its feet, with a bit less overt concentration than most years, but there's more than enough persistence to compensate for that, shaping the wine in a style that favors linear energy over volume. Harvest took place between October 4-6 for the Merlots and October 8 for Franc, a much more condensed period between two rains. Aging is in French oak, 50% new. Tasted two times.
