Description
Chateau L'If is a relatively young but highly regarded winery in Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux. It is owned by Jacques Thienpont, who also owns the legendary Château Le Pin in Pomerol. The estate is named after the yew tree ("If" in French) that stands on the property. Despite its short history, L'If has quickly gained recognition for producing high quality wines that reflect the region's unique terroir.
The core of L’If, covering around five hectares, is situated around the château itself, just below Troplong-Mondot, supplemented by two hectares near Lassegue and a further hectare in the cooler Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse. Of these eight hectares of vines, four have been replanted in the past decade, with superior vine genetics and at higher densities. Today, soil studies guide a precise blending, focusing on the best clay soils, and L’If is really developing a strong identity.
The 2019 vintage of L'If is considered exceptional, thanks to a growing season that combined optimum ripeness with freshness and balance. The wine is carefully vinified in a combination of stainless steel and oak, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (some of which are new) to enhance structure and complexity.
Tasting notes :
Colour: Deep, vibrant ruby red.
Aroma: The nose is expressive and complex, with aromas of ripe red and black fruits such as cherries, plums and blackberries. There are also layers of floral notes, such as violets, alongside hints of liquorice, graphite and subtle oak.
Palate: On the palate, the 2019 L'If is full and opulent, yet refined and elegant. The wine displays a wonderful balance between fruit concentration, acidity and tannins. The tannins are fine-grained and well-integrated, creating a supple texture. The wine is rich and layered, with flavours of dark fruit, spice and a hint of minerality. The finish is long and lingering, with a savoury, almost salty quality that adds to the complexity.
Blend: The wine is typically a blend dominated by Merlot, with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, which adds structure and aromatic complexity.

The 2019 L'If has turned out beautifully, bursting from the glass with aromas of sweet wild berries, plums and cherries mingled with notions of violets, raw cocoa, rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and concentrated, it's deep and enveloping, with lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. This gets my nod as the finest L'If to date.
The core of L'If, amounting to some five hectares, is located around the château itself, just below Troplong-Mondot, complemented by two hectares near Lassegue and another hectare in cooler Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse. Out of this eight-hectare patchwork, four have been replanted in the last decade, with superior vine genetics and at higher densities. Today, soil studies inform a precise assemblage, focusing on the best clays, and L'If is really developing a strong identity. Tasting through all the vintages produced to date with Cyrille Thienpont, who oversees this project, he described the 2012 blend as "beginner's luck," foreshadowing what was achieved in 2015, and from 2017 on. Fleshy, enveloping and refined, with plenty of perfume and texture, the estate's style is becoming very compelling.

A juicy, savory red with red fruit, tobacco, chocolate, hazelnuts and sweet earth. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm yet polished tannins and a flavorful finish. Silky and refined. Complex finish, showing mushrooms, leaves and forest fruit.

From: 2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)
The 2019 L'If is the sort of wine I would like to spend hours with. There is just too much to it. At times the 2019 is opulent and quite racy, and yet in other moments its the underlying minerality and tension in the wine that are most evident. Black cherry, herb, incense, licorice and mocha gradually open over time. The 25% Cabernet Franc comes through nicely, both in the wine's aromatic profile and overall structure. L'If is a wine to buy and cellar for a decade or more. I loved it.

From: 2019 Bordeaux: A Long, Strange Trip (Jun, 2020)
The 2019 L'If is a wine of pure and total sophistication. Statuesque and vertical in its intensity, the 2019 dazzles from the very first taste. There is an explosive energy to the 2019 that is simply remarkable. Sweet floral and spice notes soar out of the glass, followed by layers of dark raspberry, leather and cedar that fill out the wine's frame. The 2019 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. There's not much more I can add.
