Description
Château L'If is a relatively young but highly regarded winery in Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux. It is owned by Jacques Thienpont, who also owns the legendary Château Le Pin in Pomerol. The estate is named after the yew tree ("If" in French) that stands on the property. Despite its short history, L'If has quickly gained recognition for producing high-quality wines that reflect the region's unique terroir.
The core of L'If, covering approximately five hectares, is located around the château itself, just below Troplong-Mondot, supplemented by two hectares near Lassegue and another hectare in the cooler Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse. Of these eight hectares of vineyards, four have been replanted in the past decade, with superior vine genetics and at higher densities. Today, soil studies guide a precise blend, focusing on the best clay soils, and L'If is truly developing a strong identity.
The 2020 vintage was excellent in Saint-Émilion, producing a wine with wonderful balance and structure. The nose is intense and expressive, with aromas of ripe blackcurrant, cherry, and plum interwoven with subtle notes of violet, graphite, and spice. On the palate, L'If displays a velvety texture, refined tannins, and a long, mineral finish. Maturation in French oak barrels (approximately 50% new) adds further layering and elegance. A wine with a bright future, impressive even when young, but which will develop even more depth and complexity with bottle age.

Bursting with aromas of sweet blackberries, cherries, licorice and spices, the 2020 L'If is medium to full-bodied, bright and youthfully structured, with a pretty core of fruit, chalky tannins and a mouthwatering finish. In recent years, this property has begun to find an identity of its own, the bulk of whose holdings lie next to Troplong-Mondot, a property the Thienpont family owned for a decade in the 20th century.

This is one of the most structured L’Ifs I have had with currants and cherries, and chalk and salt undertones. Full and muscular. Long, long finish. The tannins and fruit go on and on. Give it three or four years to soften.

From: Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)
The 2020 L’If is dense, powerful and explosive to the core. A rush of black cherry fruit, chocolate, graphite, cloves and lavender saturates the palate. This powerful, dense Saint-Émilion is all muscle and brawn today. There is no shortage of intensity, but all of that energy is directed inwards at this stage. Huge tannins and bright acids need time to soften, but this is impressive. Readers should expect a big, big wine.
