the history of Château Haut-Brion

Château Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux's most famous and historic estates. Located in Pessac-Léognan, the estate dates back to the 16th century and was one of the first châteaux to achieve international fame. Since 1855, Haut-Brion has been classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé. While the estate is known worldwide for its red wine, its white Haut-Brion is among Bordeaux's rarest wines, produced in very limited quantities. This scarcity makes the wine particularly coveted by connoisseurs and collectors.

the terroir of pessac-léognan

The Haut-Brion vineyards are located in Pessac-Léognan, on a unique soil of gravel, clay, and sand. This combination ensures excellent drainage and heat retention, ideal for both Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The climate is tempered by the proximity of the Garonne River, which contributes to even ripening. This terroir gives the wine its characteristic balance of power, elegance, and mineral tension.

the grapes and the 2024 harvest

The 2024 Haut-Brion Blanc is composed of 56.1% Semillon and 43.9% Sauvignon Blanc. The year began with a mild, wet winter, resulting in early bud break. Constant rain in spring slowed growth and brought additional disease pressure, requiring meticulous vineyard work. Flowering was favorable for the white grapes, and the mild weather in July revitalized the vines. Harvest took place from September 2nd to 10th under excellent conditions, with cool nights and warm days that enhanced the aromatic freshness and purity of the grapes. The first juices displayed refined balance, lively acidity, and a delicate Sauvignon Blanc expression.

vinification and style

The grapes were carefully harvested by hand and taken directly to the cellar for precise vinification. A portion of the wine was aged in new French oak (approximately 40%), which adds structure and depth without overpowering the fruit. The combination of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc results in a wine with power, aromatic intensity, and longevity. The 2024 Blanc is distinguished by its full-bodied yet fresh style, with a lingering, almost ethereal finish.

color, smell and taste

The 2024 Haut-Brion Blanc presents itself with a pale yellow color and green nuances. The bouquet is complex and intense, with aromas of white peach, citrus zest, acacia, and floral notes, combined with smoke, iodine, and a subtle spice. Neal Martin notes lime, gooseberry, and mirabelle plums, with a fine minerality. Antonio Galloni praises the silky texture, with hints of marzipan, chamomile, spices, and candied lemon. The palate is medium to full, juicy, and layered, with a lively freshness and a salty, endless finish. According to the château itself, this is "one of the finest vintages of Haut-Brion Blanc." This unique wine is classified OWC/1.

reviews and storage potential

The 2024 is considered one of Bordeaux's wines of the year. The Wine Advocate (93-94) emphasizes its finesse and energetic style. Neal Martin (95-97) calls it an excellently balanced wine with fine grip and persistence. Antonio Galloni (95-97) calls the wine seamless and textured, with a long, captivating finish. Thanks to its combination of power and freshness, the wine has impressive aging potential: it can develop between 2027 and 2050, with increasing complexity and layering.

Château Haut-Brion is located in the French municipality of Pessac, a few kilometers southwest of the city of Bordeaux. Haut-Brion is the oldest and historically the most colorful Gironde winery - it was here that the first Bordeaux was made from a single vineyard in the 17th century, first donated in London coffee houses and praised by many leading writers. In 1935, the winery was bought by Clarence Dillon, an American banker. He invested large sums in the renovation of the chai and the vineyard. In 1960, Haut-Brion became the first premier cru, replacing the wooden barrels with stainless steel tanks. In 1983, the Dillon family bought the adjacent Château la Mission Haut-Brion.

The vineyard covers an area of 51 hectares of which just over 48 hectares are planted with red grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) and just under 3 hectares are dedicated to white grape varieties (Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc).
